I currently wear a solitaire, approx. 1.5ct, that is set in a plain 18k yellow gold band with platinum prongs. DH and I are talking about upgrading my center stone in a few years. I''d like to set a new stone in platinum and eventually wear it with two, slender eternity bands, like the photo below. The bands that I have seen are about 1ctw, shared prong in platinum and I may be fortunate enough to get them sooner rather than later.

If I get the platinum eternity bands b/f the reset solitaire, can I wear the eternities with my current 18k solitaire? It won''t be an everyday thing as I will probably usually wear the two bands alone but I would like to wear the three together, probably 10-12 times a month, for a couple of years until the upgrade. I''ve read that the eternity bands will likely scratch the solitaire, what do you guys think?

Secondly, is my long term plan to wear the two platinum eternity bands with a platinum solitaire (plain band) flawed? Again, it wouldn''t be something I''d wear together every day but several times a month. Will they rub?

Trying again for the picture:

The short answer is yes.

The longer answer is that the plat will eat away at the gold, but you don''t care because it is not your forever setting. The eating away would probably take years anyways. So I wouldn''t worry about it!

I have heard mixed reviews on this issue. I wear 18kt next to platinum, and I haven''t noticed any wear.

That''s what I was hoping, Dreamer, that it would take a long time to have any noticeable problems. As I won''t be wearing them everyday, it shouldn''t be too pronounced.

EHR, love your stacked rings. Can you tell me about them, please?

I would do it. If it was a "forever" setting that was really expensive and/or special to me I might think twice (but would probably do it anyway

Thanks, Gayle! Here is a link to a thread about my rings. Sorry, I don''t know how to make it clickable.

I got the link EHR, I did a quick cut and paste and was able to read all about your rings. I love the way you are able to mix them up and wear them different ways. I''m thinking about two shared prong eternity bands with rounds, similar to yours. I like the idea of being able to wear them with my solitaire or to wear either of the two bands alone or together.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for posting this question gayle - I was wondering the exact same thing, and its good to know that its really just a question of whether you care about the setting enough to protect it (which if its a temporary setting you may not).

I wonder how long it would take to see the effects with every day wear? Does anyone know?

I would guess it would take awhile to notice a real difference-many many years is my guess.

But not something you want to do if your ring is an heirloom or it''s your "forever" setting.

I wear either an 18K eternity or a 22K plain band between two platinum rings and have not noticed problems.

Keep in mind, some of the English royals wear 22k bands with platinum rings...

Thanks, Reader. Have you been wearing them together for a while?

And yes, I am sure that I am related to royalty somewhere, right?

I have mixed metals too, my engagement ring is platinum and my sapphire and diamond band is 18k white gold and i havent seen any wear either

This will be a disaster.
The shared prong bands will chop thru the sides of the prongs like no tomorrow, not because the platinum will wear away the white gold (which it will at a faster rate than others have advised you) - But because the diamonds girdles will act like saws!

As the link Pyramid posted - wear plain bands in between or be ready to cry a lot.

Thanks for your input, Garry. Your concern about the girdles of the diamonds fits with what I have read elsewhere. So here''s my next question: can one ever wear a shared prong eternity with another ring or is this style something that must be worn alone?

Are there other options for an eternity that would be less destructive? Am I stuck with a channel set or bezel set (they don''t seem to have as much sparkle to me).

I appreciate your thoughts.

Gayle, you can always have the 2 rings soldered together to prevent the rubbing. I think it is pretty easy to un-solder them when you do your reset (confirm this with an expert, however). This isn''t a good option for me, though, because I like to wear my rings separately.

or not :)

I don''t want to solder them b/c I like the option of wearing them separately so that I can change the look.

I''m wondering if all shared prong eternity bands have exposed girdles as Garry described?

I like to have this option, as well. I have a tiny 1mm 14kt gold spacer that I wear when I only wear my ering and eternity to prevent rubbing. This might be a good option for you. It was <$40 and is hardly noticeable.

Gayle, I see your post-sorry I created a new one in Hangout. Leon does a eternity band that the girdle is not as exposed. I guess I will have to email him and ask if that
would solve the problem.

You know what they say-great minds think alike!

I''ll be interested to hear what you find out. Please keep us posted.

Lots of people wear bands like that with solitaires. The rings can be made so the girdles are not exposed. But it is a more metallit look to the ring.

My ring is half eternity and the metal on the underside is juuust thicker than the band where the diamonds are, which keeps the diamonds from rubbing the e-ring.

Another option is to get a solitaire that is constructed so that the diamond band does not come into contact with the head of the ring. My ring is like that, so my diamond band couldn''t possible damage the solitaire. It is the BGD Truth solitaire.

Thanks, Dreamer! I was hoping that there was some way to make an eternity that won''t rub. I''m planning on asking BGD to make the eternity bands and will talk to them about my options.
