The only issue you may have is that coloured stones are not normally cut to calibrated sizes, so you need to know the size the setting will take. You could always have a stone cut to fit, or you may get lucky!
I''m not disagreeing with Pandora but having set a lot of stones I think there may be other things to consider. First, is the old head in good condition? Sometimes prongs are worn or the girdle thickness/pavilion angle of the new stone may not be appropriate for the angle cut into the old setting even if the stones are the same diameter. Recutting can weaken the prongs. What about the new stone''s depth? Due to lower R.I.''s colored stones are generally cut deeper than diamonds.
I''d recommend replacing the head. Starting new will add security and make a better job of it. It''s quite inexpensive in comparison to losing a nice gemstone.
Thanks Richard! You have some gorgeous things are Artcut !!

It''s brand new. Had a round diamond that, while beautiful, did not work for me. I''m looking to replace it with a spinel (I think).
What about the new stone''s depth?>
Don''t have one yet. The old one was 6.43x6.48, with a depth of 4.00 mms. If I can find something to fit it, I''d prefer to keep the current head. It''s new and platinum.

Should I look for a stone smaller than the previous one carat that was in it, as a small stone probably would be more shallow?

If I can find something to fit it safely, I''d prefer to keep the current head. It''s new and platinum. I don''t buy the most expensive gem stones, either, but surely would not like to loose it.
If you have anything at Artcut that you think would fit the bill, let me know.
is a zircon that would probably be the closest type as it is a "diamond cut", and in the 6.5mm round range but it is
4.7mm depth. I did a quick search so there are probably others more in other taste. The question still is if your current setting could accomodate it.
I am not recommending nor have bought this dealer, just an example.
