i'm looking at this setting: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/14k-white-gold-thin-french-cut-pave-set-diamond-engagement-ring-17158w14.html

i'd like to put a 0.75 - 0.80 ct I VS1 RB in it. the stones in the setting (there are 20 in all with a total carat weight of 0.19) are G-H VS2-SI1. i know that the general rule of thumb is that side-stones should be either equal in color or darker than your center stone, but with these side stones being so tiny (each is just a hair under 0.01 ct), will i be able to get away with an I color stone in the center? i'd really like to take the savings in going with an I over an H and put it toward spicing up my proposal!

Depends on if your stone has fluorescence or not. If it does then yes, you can get away with it. However, being that they're so close in color, you maybe be able to regardless.

You Shouldn't notice any difference at all.

Yes.

most of the stones i've been looking at do not have any fluorescence. i'm going with a GIA ideal cut, so i was thinking (or hoping rather!) that the fire and brilliance of the stone would further mask any perceived color difference.

thanks for the replies everyone!

I had a 0.81 ct I color diamond set with F/G side stones and the color difference bothered me, especially when viewed the main stone from sides. I know some people don't mind the difference at all, so it's up to you.

how large were your side stones?

i don't think i'll have an issue with a side-view angle because the pavé stones are set into the band in such a way that you can't really see much of them from the side. the only angle you'd be able to do a side-by-side comparison is from top-down.

You won't see the difference, it's a safe color pairing (especially when you're using melee - if they were differences between large diamonds in a 4ct three-stone ring, I might be concerned).

I just purchased an I color diamond with a g/h halo and we could not tell a difference. You should be fine.

What I meant is, when I saw the main stone from sides, it looked much tinted than the side stones. The difference was not noticeable when viewing from top. I believe my side stones were 5 pointers or a little smaller.
