Hi all. Thank goodness for this forum where I can get help in my NeverEndingUpgrade. Actually, I think that my NeverEndingUpgrade might be ending soon.

I know there has been a lot posted about platinum vs. white gold, but a jeweler told me something the other day that I have never heard. She said that platinum can bend with wear and platinum eternity bands can bend out of round and that is why some people lose diamonds out of platinum pave bands. She also said that if platinum is not treated properly in the casting stage (I won''t use the word "cured" but that is kind of what she was saying), then the diamonds can fall out that way too.

I am trying to figure out whether to order a Ritani Endless Love 3-stone ring in platinum or white gold. She said that Ritani''s white gold is very good and cost effective considering the price of platinum, and I should not feel like it is a lower quality than platinum. I do like the shinier look of white gold and have never had trouble with my white gold rings turning, although I don''t wear them everyday. I guess I created my own mental block because I thought that platinum was the be-all and end-all metal. OK, I guess all that advertising was pretty effective.

I always thought that when I upgraded to a white metal ring, that I would go with platinum, hands down. I wore an 18k yellow gold ring for 15 years and it really shows no signs of wear at all, so I guess you could say that I am pretty careful with my rings. Not only am I considering the 3-stone ring, but also 2 eternity bands to go with it, so I am looking at a pretty big chunk of change for all 3 rings.

So, what would you all do? Order the 3 ring suite in platinum or white gold? Just for info, I am setting a 1.05 ct. H/SI1 Jubilee cut diamond between 2 Asscher cut sapphires. The diamond will be bezel set with a diamond halo, but the sapphires will be bezel set with no diamond halo. The ring will look something like the attached photo only with all square stones.

I am probably going to go with this ring because I don''t want to purchase a ring I haven''t tried on, and this ring looked really good on me, even though I would not have picked it out from a photo. The bezel set sapphires contrast well with the halo set diamond. I just need to have more info on the metal. Maybe some pros can jump in here. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have seen platin and white gold eternity bands bend when worn by someone who is harsh in treating their jewelry. They may claim to be unaware of it, but the damage usually is very apparent. If you had a ring for fifteen years already that didn''t bend, then you probably won''t damage a platinum or a white gold one in the future. Rings becoming seriously bent are possible, but not commonplace.

To add to what Dave's already said, my wband is slightly out of round, as is my ering shank. Mind you, both are at least 1920's, possibly earlier so it's been about two lifetimes of wear and I've gotten used to it. That said, a new ring that you treat well - as in, you dont do gardening with them on, dont do home repairs or say, build a stone wall with them on, then they should be fine.

As for metals, I just prefer platinum because I like the color and patina of plat, and I like the heft of it. Some people dont like the heft and prefer a lighter ring so white gold makes more sense for them. But I also like that you dont lose any metal when polishing or smoothing out a nick in plat, as you do in white gold...

ETA: It seems like people that aren't that familiar with platinum always say it's not as strong as gold, which is weird to me. It's more maleable, but I believe it's preferred for prongs and head settings because of its strength...at least that's what I've always heard.
