Calling those who put a halo on a larger diamond

I’m researching my upgrade and keep going back and forth between:

RB solitaire in platinum
RB halo in platinum
Elongated OMB in yellow gold

The next stone will be 5+ carats in H color or above. I had an L antique cushion and want to go higher in color this time.

My ring size is 6 but can go up to 7 when I’m hot ever since entering my 40s.

19 years ago, my original e-ring was a 1 carat princess cut in an elaborate Simon G setting. This was pre-PS. Once I found PS, I sold that ring and bought a 2.9 carat L color cushion from OWD. Maytal Hannah set it in a 2 sided halo.

The melee was super white and I didn’t love the contrast with the L diamond, although I did love this setting. A few years ago I started to feel like maybe halo settings were too commonplace which is funny because I’ve never seen another well done halo IRL, just PS.

A year or so back I decided to try a more vintage style setting. I bought 2 1-carat matching cushions and commissioned Caysie with CVB to make a 3 stone setting based on 2 of her designs. This ring worked in my mind but in real life was just too bulky and complicated. My husband called it a “Super Bowl ring.” I shouldn’t have mixed 2 styles because it felt cluttered- although the craftsmanship was amazing!

After just owning it for a couple of weeks I contacted Caysie and told her I wanted to change it again. I had fallen for all the rich yellow gold that I’d been seeing over the last couple of years so decided to take my 3 diamonds and use those in a new 3 stone ring.

I loved this setting! However, the main stone seemed SO small after taking it out of the halo. I also realized I’m not a 3 stone girl. At least not for my e-ring. I’d love one for a right hand ring. So I decided to sell this ring and go forward with my upgrade.

A 5 carat RB will look similar in size to my first halo setting. We do have the budget to go larger but I don’t think I’ll see a big difference in size unless I go to 7 carats. And I’m not sure I want to go that large just for wearability.

I guess my question is - if you had a larger diamond in a solitaire setting and later put it in a halo, how do you feel about it now? Do you still love the halo or do you wish you’d kept it a solitaire?

Tagging @m-2-b and @Phoenix for their thoughts! :wavey:

Could you start with a solitaire? That seems like the easiest solution. The size will be comparable to your MH halo. You can see what you think and if you want to bump up size from there, halo it. It would be far more difficult mentally (for me, anyway) to start with a new larger stone in a halo and then switch it to a solitaire if you weren’t crazy about the halo.

I halo’ed my 10.6 mm OEC and loved the coverage on my size 6.5 finger.

Why don’t you buy this returnable tester and wear it around the house for a few days?

That's definitely an option! I've just spend sooo much money on settings in the last few years so I was trying to avoid another unused setting. I know I can't go a cheap stock route because it'll change the way I feel about the entire ring. If I go with a RB in a solitaire it will be similar to Phoenix's leon mege setting.

I could always sell the setting later if I decide to halo it.

I agree that I cannot go from halo to solitaire - I did that with my cushion and it gave instant DSS.

That's good to know! You don't miss the simplicity of the solitaire?

I didn't even consider a test ring- that's a good idea! Thank you!

I initially had a solitaire for my 10.5mm transitional cut, but I got DSS, so I put it in a halo. No regrets at all! I adore everything about the halo, not least of which the finger coverage.

Do you happen to have a link to Phoenix’s Leon setting? I searched but can’t find it. Would love to see!

Tbh, I’m not really a soli girl. My current stone is 12.37 mm and while I love the setting-I’m itching to do something with more presence.

I adore your current stone! I love how it has so much presence while also looking very classic. What are you thinking for a reset?

Thank you! I’m thinking something minimal with a deco vibe. I haven’t settled on a design yet and I keep buying bands:lol-2:

It’s SO hard to choose on a setting, especially when you are a PS member and see all the beautiful designs out there. I am on my 2nd engagement ring setting and have only been married 8 years.
I originally had my 1.75 RB in a Danhov micro-pave halo with a double shank in platinum. I definitely has finger presence and made my center stone look like a 2.25-2.50ct.
It’s an exquisite setting but ended up not suiting my daily active lifestyle. I now have my RB set in a platinum halo with milgraining with a 14KT rose gold band, all in a brushed finish. (My avatar photo). Since the setting is simple I can stack bands for a different look depending on my mood and level of bling.

The point of sharing this was to offer another possibility of adding bling depending on mood with bands to a simpler version of a halo? 6FA9CDFF-8C86-4C71-8748-3A762CA97B94.jpeg 2F3AFA61-1267-4A1F-AE6A-A75B744A203C.jpeg

Thank you! Unfortunately I can’t really stack besides one thin wedding band. My finders are too short and it just ends up looking like a little sausage finger lol. I wish I could stack!

Hi there! :wavey:

I am not as much of a contributor on this forum these days!

The solitaire was always just a temporary setting for me in the upgrading process. Now that I have my ultimate ACA in my dream Emilya halo setting, no more DSS for me! Absolutely no regrets after all of these years!

Hope this helps and good luck in your final decision!

I have tried so many variations since getting Re-involved with PS. I love my 5.5 ct O/P transitional with a halo—it looks bigger than my 5.62 oec solitaire. Here is Godzilla, whom I adore, but my DH thinks is too much! My hands are large, to be honest…size 8 78C46EDD-8172-428B-A14C-C4718F6DBCFB.jpeg

Nothing to add from personal experience but wanted to compliment you on your Super Bowl setting. Even if it did not end up being your style, it was very pretty.

Not Godzilla! :lol-2: Love that name. And I can see why you love to wear her! Big bold hand presence. I also adore your OMC and the simplicity of the solitaire.

One of my fave PS rings was a big brown diamond in a rose gold emilya setting. If anyone knows how to find it and wants to post a pic… it was glorious.

Thanks! And yes I know that ring and it was stunning! :kiss2:

I definitely think the rose gold halo made that ring vs just putting it in a solitaire.

Thanks @diamondyes! The setting was hand forged for the stone so even if I get another setting, I will keep the current one just in case :)
