I'm considering an emerald cut stone which I hope to set as a three stone ring, and I would value some feedback from our experts here. As for the GIA L grade, I saw the stone next to an 8+ LVS1 with no fluorescence and the 5 ct. reads white at most angles. It may be worth mentioning, although I am not pulsed, that the dealer is marketing the stone as an "asscher". I have a recent Rap price sheet, but pricing insight is always appreciated too. :)

Seller has both EGL and GIA cert. EGL is attached.

GIA cert:
Shape: Square Emerald cut, 5.14ct
10.01 x 10.00 x 6.39 mm
L - VS2
Polish / Symmetry: Very Good / Very Good
Fluorescence: Medium Blue
Table 70%
Depth 63.9%

Do you have pictures of the actual stone? Is it kind of flat looking it has a big table versus the depth ratio....

I have a video, showing both stones I looked at, but I can't upload it here. I agree about the table to depth ratio.

That table would be out of my comfort range at 70%. I think a lot of the beauty of a step cut is having a crown that can be seen, and a smaller table and high crown are very beautiful.

My asscher is tiny compared to this stone, but I think my table is about 58% and it has beautiful proportions. It may be hard to see on a smaller stone, but it is the second from the left.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7SBfNGxTFE&list=UUEV7slr-i-VduBBnfv9MxhA&index=2

We call square emeralds "asschers" around here in honor of their originator and to differentiate them from rectangular emerald cuts. Many vendors use the term as well.

Oh, I found an outstanding example of a great asscher. You won't find many with this kind of cut. Table is 58.4. ($328k...not many 5 ct asschers available for price comps and no L's that I see.)

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10397/

Here's a 5 ct J VS2 at $68k (this table is 64 and ok):

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/5.02-carat-j-color-vs2-clarity-sku-323567

The price differences due to color surely are significant at 5 cts!

Hi Rand,

What an exciting project! A couple of things to think about, presumably you are ok with such a large EC showing some warmth in an L colour? It wouldn't worry me but make sure to check the diamond out in as many different lights as possible where the ring would be worn to make sure any warmth shown is fine with you. With the proportions, although the table is large it wouldn't necessarily be a deal breaker for me, especially as choices might be limited in this size range for the type of EC you are searching for, if you love the diamond and it performs the way you want, then that's the main thing. Images would tell us more or if you could post a video, that would be helpful. If you would like, as DS has already done, we could post some suggestions if you give us an idea of budget and your preferences.

Thank you, very sound feedback! I do not mind the L so long as the fluorescence can off-set some of the color. I really want an emerald cut that is more square than rectangular, but not necessarily a perfect square. When I started searching for this piece three months ago, I found the perfect cut 5.50 J VVS stone, circa 1960's but I waited it out through the Vegas show, and it's not priced well. After seeing another PS member's stunning L a few days ago, I am inspired!

In terms of the proportions and ratio, I think this stone is cut the way square emeralds were cut fifty years ago, like the older "Asschers". I never exclusively buy from paper or ideal ratio's-- which I find useful, but also driven by marketing of what's conventionally "ideal". Lot's of older cut stones fall short of today's ideal cutting standards but are more dynamic and pleasing to the eye, hence the reason I stick to older cut stones. I like different :)

I am really hoping other members with larger squarish emeralds can help me by sharing their specs and photos so I can see what their ideal emerald cut looks like, as well as their experience and insight into choosing a stone. My budget is flexible, but I always use trade pricing as a guideline. I consider my stones an investment.

Let me know what you think of the video and thanks so much for taking the time to respond! BTW, the 8 carat is stunning but a little too elongated for my finger.

OOH sounds beautiful! My crown is under the "recommended" crown height (all of the other specs were in the higher cut grade specs listed on the PS EC page), but I love the way it looks, such a personal choice....would love to see pics! (You can see mine in SMTB if you want, though mine is a much smaller stone lol!).

edited to add: recommended crown height for the top tier cuts of EC in the cut class tool page~

After looking at your ring, I think my stone may not be rectangular enough. I love the way your stone is set- really beautiful!

Thanks! I was going for the vintage rectangular look that I kept finding in old stones when I looked online. The ratio is 1.51 so, not for everyone but it was a certain look I loved. GL with your search, an EC of that size sounds delicious!

HI:

I've just lost two long posts with 10 examples of shapes and sizes for comparison! So for brevity...I will suggest you go to First Dibs and filter by "emerald cut diamond" and it will yield a sizable number of rings to look at. Most of the Estate dealers have their own websites but advertise on First Dibs as well.

Just an example:

OMG- you are the best! 1st dibs in one of my favorite sites. I have found three important rings through the site, so I am a regular visitor. I tried on the 3rd one on your list, and its stunning but lacks spread. Love the Harry Winston too! Thank you so much for taking the time!!!

Great post! And thank you. I've never looked at anything Diamonds by Lauren and I like the stone you found! I'm going to dig further there. I love, love, love your ring. It has the classic sophistication I'm going for too. Don't hate me if I copy :)

Thanks again!

Hi RandG - my emerald lovin sista! :wavey:
Look at this ring on Ebay. Are these the proportions you are looking for? The price seems high.. but then again maybe I just don't have a clue on pricing these days. I have emailed this seller a few times because they have a diamond and ruby Tiffany line bracelet that I crave. They seem very nice and they have a store in Scottsdale AZ.

Thank you!! I had not seen this one. I will definitely take a closer look and reach out to the seller. I did contact a seller on the West Coast about a ring and I'm hoping they come back with a better price than list. I'm really torn between a more traditional emerald cut like you have and something more square. I guess I was hoping for something in-between but I just haven't seen it yet. If you see anything good please keep me in mind. You have excellent taste!

Hi!
Glad you liked that stone.. definitely agree that the more you see the better you can decide which shape is the most pleasing to you. The seller's name was Russ.. very nice. I'm actually going to see that diamond/ruby line bracelet in person in July at their store. We are going to be in Scottsdale on vacation and I plan to stop by and take a look see!
What did you think about the 95K price tag? High right?
I don't know if you are in the NY area but I got my ring thru the owner of Gross Jewelers in Garden City NY.
I told him what I was interested in and he found it for me. LOVELOVELOVE Gross Jewelers!

I would love to know what you think of it in person. The pictures show some warmth. I think it may be a better stone than the one I am looking at and posted here. It's priced for retail. I will look into Gross-- it's not close, but nothing is too far for the right piece :)
Thank you-- I really appreciate the help!

I have a ring coming to me which may be "the one". I can send it back if its not right. But in searching for my dream emerald cut ring, I also found stunning vintage emerald cut Tiffany diamond earrings too which I really don't need but I couldn't pass them up. Will post when both come! Seeing lot's of signed ruby pieces. :)

Can you tell me about the signed ruby pieces? :D I always have signed rubies on the brain.
And also.. since you are doing a whole emerald cut suite.. here is a bracelet too!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tiffany-Co-Platinum-Emerald-Cut-Diamond-Bracelet-22-00ct-Retail-260-000-00-/371084148478?pt=US_Fine_Bracelets&hash=item566656befe

I'm not sure about the ring. It may be more square than I want, but I decided its worth an in-person view. I had no biz buying the earrings, but it was too good to pass up. I will likely let a pair of my studs go, should I keep the Tiffany's.

The bracelet is beyond stunning! That might be a tough one for me to justify. The collector I bought the earrings from has a Tiffany emerald cut eternity ring, and 3 stone emerald cut ring. Waiting on details. Tell me what you think of these, Tiffany and Oscar Heyman, respectively. I've got one more Van Cleef you might like (which is a steel at $2300) too but haven't figured out how to post the shot yet. Are you on the West Coast?

I took a chance on the ring I posted here in the thread. I'm a little apprehensive because it was more square, but its so hard to pass up, when the risk is miniscule in comparison to the reward. The earrings are Tiffany 2.24/2.25 emerald cut studs. It was a totally unnecessary purchase, and I'm not sure I will keep them, but if I do, I will definitely be letting go of a pair.

I like this Van Cleef ring the best. Circa 1975. On other forums I belong to, there are ways to private message. Is there no way to do that on PS?

"no biz buying the earrings.." You are hilarious!
Nope.. not on the west coast.. on the east. :???:
Is the emerald cut that might be "the one" set in a ring or a loose stone?
You must be sooooo excited to see it.
I love the signed ruby finery that you posted for me.. especially the ruby eternity band and the 3 stone ring. Do you know any details about the 3 stone ring?
Your new Tiffany emerald cut earrings sound like a wow. Are they more square or rectangle?
Fun! Fun! Fun!!!!

A 7% crown height is one of the deal breakers for me , in addition to the large table. Although I don't like to rule stones out by the numbers, this one, unfortunately, has too many negatives stacked against it to turn out to be a good performing EC.

Love both of those too! I will get more details.
I bought the ring as is, so it has two .50 half moons flanking the 5 carat. I will likely have to re-set it. Here's a shot of the earrings. I can't wait to see them because I've tried emerald cut studs in the past, and they always read smaller than their carat weight to me. There is also a three stone ring, all D VVS stones as well, nearly 5 carats total, but I don't know if it will have the finger coverage I want. This is this last ring I'm buying for a while so I want it to be FANTASTIC!
