I am looking to buy this loose diamond for an engagement ring. I have no idea if this diamond I am looking at will be fine. I just dont want to buy a diamond that is very noticable by the naked eye of "flaws" and was concerns about any chipping. Thought maybe I could have some help with this diamond if these diamond would show alot of flaws with the naked eye. Thanks, Cody 2166886316.jpg

Hi Cody and welcome!

This diamond concerns me unfortunately, the reason for this is that it is SI2 clarity in an emerald cut, it is very rare than SI2 clarity in this shape is eye clean because the step cut arrangement shows inclusions more easily than a round diamond for example. Chances are it will show a lot of flaws to the naked eye. Chipping shouldn't be of huge concern except in the case of a very thin/ extremely thin girdle, the thick variances of this girdle might be ok in another stone but in this clarity grade, I think it would be wise personally to consider VS2 clarity or better to maximize your chances of getting a lovely EC.

If you give us an idea of budget and other requirements, we could take a look around for you to try to find some others? Lastly, it is far preferable to shop with a vendor that offers images such as ASET to help judge the light return of a diamond, fancy shapes are so variable it's really buying blind without images.

I hope this helps a bit, then we can go from there. :wavey:

Thanks for the reply, I went ahead and purchased the diamond, after reading what you wrote, I should of waited but they have a 30 day return policy so I figured I could just send it back if it was to noticable. I was wanting to stay under 5k for the loose diamond, I color is what I was wanting because of the price. Another question, I've seen EGL certified diamonds alot cheaper than GIA certified, I heard they grade the diamonds higher compare to GIA but in your opinion, if the report from EGL states it is a VVS1 or higher, will that still be eye clean?? Thanks for the help and if you locate any Emerald cut diamonds I would love to see them because I will just send this another back for a refund.

You need to move this to RockyTalk. Everyone will suggest the best stones for your budget.

Please don't buy an EGL graded diamond, you will NOT be saving money by doing so. EGL International graded stones are graded in places like India, Asia etc and they have far less strict grading policies than GIA does. What this means is we frequently see people purchasing these stones thinking they got a great deal only to discover their EGL graded stone is 4 or 5 (in some cases 6 or 7) colour shades different (worse) than GIA grading and 2 or 3 grades out on clarity. They are usually totally incorrect in the grade of cut they give as well so something EGL grades as an Excellent cut would not be an excellent cut with GIA.

EGL USA has tougher standards but they are still 2 to 3 colour grades out compared to GIA and usually 1 or 2 minimum on clarity. You will be far better buying a GIA stone, knowing exactly what you are getting than something that is marketed and sold to you as something it is really not.

'Morning Arkie, I have asked for this to be moved to RT :wavey:

Cody, Arkie has given you great advice regarding EGl graded diamonds, I would personally advise sticking to GIA graded stones and in an emerald cut, usually at least VS2 clarity grades or higher are needed for the stone to be eyeclean. You might get lucky and find the odd SI1 that might be eye clean or eye clean-ish, but those are unusual and I am definitely concerned with SI2 potentially not being eye clean and you being unhappy.

We will gladly try to find you some alternatives, we might have trouble finding you an emerald cut of that size for your 5k budget but we can definitely see what's out there.

EC with SI2 won't be eyeclean.

EGL is not a good value. It's a nice way to get ripped off. Any vendor telling you different is trying to take you for a ride.

Post your budget and where you are and we'll be happy to help you get a nice stone for your budget.
