Hi Pricescope!

I've been lurking this site for a while now and thought it would be a good idea to post on here for some advice and help.

I'm set on this setting from JA and love how it looks. I know its the style she likes. http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/side-stones/14k-white-gold-tapered-baguette-diamond-engagement-ring-item-7101

I am going for a cushion cut diamond to go with it and was looking to get something towards 0.75 until this one caught my eye and it looked good to me, what are your thoughts? Would it look good in this setting?

My budget is to stay under $4k CAD as we are also trying to save to buy a home. This is shipping to Canada so I'm not sure what experiences some people have had with duties or taxes from JA as well. What additional cost would there be if any?

I tried looking locally but I seem to be wasting more time with the sales person than anything else.

Thanks

Hi Anton, welcome out of lurkdom!

I think you have excellent taste, the setting is a true classic with the side baguettes, very nice indeed! The cushion has potential, is this the type of cushion you want? You might be aware that this shape can vary tremendously, have you done some research to be sure of the type of cushion you and your GF like best? If not, this video might be helpful.

JA will supply 3 ASET images one time only, so it might be a good thing to pick out 2 others, or we can suggest 2 more if you wish, then get ASET images for all three so you can choose the best one.

We have had some Canadian buyers purchase recently here so one of them might be able to advise what additional costs might be payable.

I hope this helps start you off in the right direction, it's a very exciting time for you getting the ring and saving for a house, happy days! Best of luck with your plans and please don't hesitate to ask as you have further questions! :wavey:

It looks like it might have potential. Request an aset image and Post it.
Cushions tend to face up small so you should probably go as big as you can in your
Budget.

Thanks for the reply Lorelei, I jumped the gun on Monday morning and requested the ASET for two cushions, the one I posted and another one below.
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.76-carat-i-color-vs2-clarity-sku-330013
Should of got one more but I'm not sure if its too late to get another ASET done.

I saw that cushion varied in shape quite a bit so I took my GF and I looked at a few diamonds together in stores to get a feel for the cut. She liked the square cushions but tended to favor the slightly rectangular look more but not ones that looked "too long". So that's why I requested those two.

As tyty333 also posted, will these cushions look small in this setting? My goal also was to go as close as possible to a total of 1 carat. The setting had 0.25 plus a 0.70-0.80 cushion.

I'll post the ASETs once I get them. I am open to suggestions as well.

Neither is going to ASET out very well.

Any suggestions? JA is still giving me time to look for others.

I vastly prefer the first one over the second.

I like this one best:

3721.87 is the equivalent.
Setting is 1200.
That leaves 2500 for the stone.

This is my second choice: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.70-carat-d-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-305608

I went through 300 cushions for you to pick those two. They are the best in budget and over 70 points that I found on JA.

Wow those two look great! Thank you for looking at the cushions as well. I like those and I'll get them to aset one. Tough choice on which one.

Also went through them again and saw this one. I'll probably ASET this one. Looks pretty close to the two you suggested at least in my eyes.

I'll get them to check my first choice, I like the shape but I'm impressed with the two you just suggested, they were the cut I was looking for.

Oh boy.

Okay. That stone is not the same.

The one I posted for you is better.

Don't get the original two stones sent to ASET. Release the hold. They will be duds.

Send the new stone you found and the two I found, and get THOSE sent for ASET instead. That way you will have 3 potentially nice stones to chose from. Instead of three duds.

I was comparing them and I am getting the two you mentioned checked and the one I found. The two I initally posted can't compare. Thanks again. I'll let you know how the ASET looks.

Well here are the ASETs and replies from JA, what are your thoughts?

Diamond 305608 has excellent fire, brilliance, and scintillation, and the gemologist considers it to be their personal favorite because of its superior color (which only a personal preference). Its faceting and shape are attractive, it's eye clean, and its "D" color is icy white.

Diamond 319982 has excellent fire, brilliance, and scintillation as well! Its light performance is comparable to diamond 305608, and it also appears eye clean and has an attractive faceting pattern. Its "G" color appears white, but if you hold it alongside the "D" colored diamond, it shows a very slight warmth by comparison. Its color is perfectly fine, but they ranked it as your second best option simply because diamond 305608 is more white.

Diamond 319973 has great light performance in its own right, but if you compare it to your other two, they perform just a little stronger than this one. It's eye clean and has a round shape too. It has a true "I" color, which most people should view as white until you are holding it next do a diamond with a "G" color or higher.

The second one (G color) would be my choice.

I really like the aset on the second one ( the G).
