Yo all,
so here's the situation: engagement ring, platinum tension setting, solitaire diamond

I have done a lot of research and here is the rock i've been looking at: ~.85 ct, AGS0 (true hearts), VS2 eye-clean, natural
I found one rock like this with an "I" color. How would that look in platinum?? I don't want to skimp too much, but budget is also a concern. I've read a lot of places that an ideal cut and tension setting can both serve to bump up the color a couple grades, but i'm nervous to bank on this.

Also, any opinions on the 2 settings i've narrowed it down to?

can you go to a store and visit I color stones in person?

Here are some pictures...

as far as the setting those both look pretty modern, if you think that is what your GF would like then by all means :) but it is definitely not your traditional engagement ring (which may be a good thing! you know her best)

*I* personally would not have a problem with an I in plat. I like the second setting better. Did your GF pick a
tension setting?

No, she did not pick out the settings. She and I both want it to be a surprise, although she wants the ring yesterday, lol. She doesnt wear much jewelry but is definitely more "modern elegant" if that's a thing. I like the tension setting because I feel it shows off the diamond better and is unique. Also in her line of work I'm very concerned that she would be constantly catching the prongs on things.

The biggest downfall in the tension is that it has to be sized right the first time and that will probably ruin some of the surprise.

I have read that people catch prongs on things but I have never found this to be a problem. Another idea would be a bezel setting, those are also what I would describe as sleek and modern

I have never had an issue with it either but ???

Reason why I was asking was that it seems like tension rings are really popular with the guys but only popular with
a few girls with certain taste. Sholtd (I think I spelled that wrong) makes some lovely settings that have clean lines.

There are a few people on PS that have there settings and they look really nice. I'm having a hard time finding
them with a search but here is the link to their website. My favorite is R379-1.

I love the first setting you choose, the bypass. I have a similar RHR and nothing catches on it, smooth as butter and very comfortable. An I color stone will be beautiful in either one.

I'm not a big fan of tension settings like that, nor do I know many females who are. I know they aren't cheap or easily sizable so you might want to see if she's left any setting preference clues around.

The first setting, it looks more feminine. Tension settings tend to be pretty masculine in appearance and the second one feels like that to me. The curves of the first one are better suited to a woman's hand IMO, and do look modern but still graceful and not over-chunky.

Personally, I find I colored diamonds to be plenty white most of the time, whatever metal they are set in. Especially to a casual observer.

And yeah, ditto to bezel settings. I have one and it's the bees knees! I love having the girdle of the diamond nice and safe if you whack it on something, and a well done bezel setting just looks incredibly dainty. Also, I think bezels make the patterning on a stone pop beautifully- I didn't realize how distracting prongs were to the arrow patterning until I swapped a stone from a prong set to a bezel, and I really loved how the patterning just jumps out at you without prongs on it.

Thanks for all the info!

It's probably the engineer in me that really likes the tension settings. But I do actually really like the half-bezel options as well. I am going to look into those a little more.

Also, from what i'm hearing it seems like an "I" diamond wouldn't be hideous in platinum? lol. If I get an AGS0 cut, how is AGS color grading, is it less strict than GIA?? i.e., would an AGS "I" be comparable to a GIA "J"?? If that's the case, I might consider going to an AGS "H" just in case.

I like the second setting, it's lovely and the way it pushes the stone up in my opinion will make the diamond stand out. I'm no pro though.
