This stone has been put up by someone who truly knows ABSOLUTELY nothing about diamonds (even the difference between color and clarity), OR by a very clever person hiding behind that possibility - thus, they are "allowed" to misrepresent the stone by calling it flawless, high quality, hard (which means nothing), etc...either way, caution is advised! You have absolutely no idea what is being offered here!

Lots of folks out there are in fact attracted by the possibility that they may be getting a "great deal" from someone who knows nothing about what they are selling...then it''s time to examine your "greed" meter!...and DON''T cry in your beer if you get taken to the cleaners!!

I always say, you get what you pay for when you purchase a diamond, and sometimes a lot less!

Sorry, I''ve missed a beat. What stone is this??

Woops - my bad!

The previous post was supposed to go with the thread about what a hard diamond is...sorry.

Leonid, if you can fix this it would be great!

Thanks DiamondExpert - I never intended to buy it, just wondered about the ''hard'' diamond part which means nothing.

Here''s the auction being discussed.

Perhaps I don''t understand what''s being sold here. An un-named and uncontactable jeweler with unknown skills supplied for free an unrecognizable verbal opinion about a few of the attributes of a ‘stone’ contained in a in what appears to be a silver pendant (it’s marked) in marginal condition. This supposedly flawless stone contains only small specks and shows a wonderful ‘read through’ effect from the back. Packing and handling is for an unspecified amount from Norway and they will cheerfully accept bank drafts as payment. No returns and no refunds.

23 people so far have bid for this.

Did I miss anything?

I think it looks like a GREAT DEAL, and I think I'll bid on it right now! Maybe I'll even bid TWICE just to double my chances of getting it.

So what was your bid, Neil?

Gosh, in the main PS database a 1 ct E-IF seems to be worth about $12,000 (£ 6,300) and their expert says that theirs is only worth £3,000. I guess these these things are less expensive in Norway but maybe the difference is in the shipping charges.

(Does anyone know how to generate the 'pound' sign for British Pounds on a standard keyboard?

Neil:

I believe that CrankyDave mispoke about using the crude method of a larger hammer to generate a pound sign on your computer.

First, you must understand that we must work in British units of measure in order to get a British "Pound."

Giving that this is an international forum I will work to educate everyone.

First thing to understand is that the English unit of mass is a "slug" (no I am not making this up - look it up if you want to, it is usually one of the last definitions of the word "slug" in a dictionary; and anyone with access to Scientific/Engineering references can also look it up). Most of the world uses the metric mass of "kilogram."

The unit of lenght in the English system is the "Foot" which was based on the length of an average mans foot. The smaller unit of inch is based on the width of a mans thumb.

A "pound" is the unit of weight that an object experiences in the English units of measurment when a mass is subject to an accelleration or the force of gravity (which actually is an acceleration). The metric system uses a weight in the terms of "Newton" based on sir Isaac himself (the metric system was not able to totally get away from using references tied to people - if only in name).

Thus, a British "pound" is generated when you accelerate some slugs of mass

To generate the "Pound" sign on you computer all you have to do is take at some "Slugs" of mass, posititioned a "foot" above the keyboard - and cause it to accelerate on the keyboard of the computer. It helps if you use all of your strenth to help in this acceleration... All that is usually needed is the mass of your fist if you do not have a hammer, or other object handy. This may take several attempts to produce a clear "pound" sign on your computer.

I hope this gives you an idea of where the term "slugged" came from (the rapid application of mass to an object or person), and why things are "pounded."

Oh, and please let us know when you have created that "pound" sign on your computer....

Us engineers are full of all kinds of usefull knowledge - arn't we...

Now all I have to do is find some slugs of diamonds of the right price and quality... Do I get points for finding the right sized slug of a diamond?

Perry,

Gosh, that helps alot. I knew you were full of something.

Pounding with slugs would also explain how a man''s thumb could get to be an inch wide.

It furthermore explains the use of a man''s thumb for this unit, instead of that of a woman. Ask a woman to pound a slug and she''ll tell you to go pound sand.

Neil:

Since I was introduced to the English Unit of mass: the "Slug" in a course called "Statics" you may have a point. Live slugs could not be used because they move, and hence are not - static.

So after they squeezed the life out of us in "Statics", it was hard to get the static slugs to move for the next class "Dynamics."

You may also be right that perhaps it was the class "Statics" that slowed my love life down due to the requirment that I work with slugs... Static slugs at that...

Where were you back then to set me straight - or at least keep me moving.
