Okay, gem fans, picked this up at Tucson. It is 7.71 ct, has a perfectly centered/traveling 6-star. It is unusual in its pear shape. I would never have thought I would buy a star ruby but when I saw it in person, well the cash just jumped out of my wallet, LOL. Isn''t this the fun of gemstones? The miraculousness and beauty of a mere mineral.

Nuff philosphizing. This was my husband''s fave buy of mine this year. He is geologist and has rarefied tastes; for example, he about weeps when I buy amethyst: "It''s QUARTZ!"

I''m thinking full bezel setting for this due to the pear point.

But what color metal?

What would Harriet chose?!?!!

Gorgeous pear star ruby, from the rich background to the unusual shape to the very strong and centered star. I''d say high karat yellow gold!

Oh. My.
~~~And you are just now getting around to mentioning this?~~~
I love it. Is it going to be for a ring or a pendant?
There was someone on here last year I think who had a stone sort of like that one, but not a pear. I''ve never seen a star that was a pear.
When do you see the star?
just fantastic..good buy there stonie..you have a good eye
Thank you Chrono!
This stone was just sitting in a PAPER PLATE full of star rubies, how UNDIGNIFIED is that?
Chrono, bezel, what do you think?
Thank you, ammieguy and Pink!
I was thinking ring because I love taking that stone into light and playing with that star. If it was a pendant, I''d have to put it on a long chain so I could mindlessly play with it while the world goes by me ;-)
The star comes out in daylight or artificial light. It moves around on the stone.
I did not even realized it was a 6-sided star until my husband was looking at the haul and picked that out as his favorite.
Good eye to be able to pick that out of the paper plate.
That is completely amazing! Please go with the high carat gold to keep that red nice and warm.
Awesome! I am not so much into reds, but I really think this is a gorgeous stone!
Wow! I really like it! I''ve never seen a pear shaped star ruby before. While not Harriet, I think a thin, full bezel in white gold/platinum would look fabulous!
Awesome!
Ditto to what Chrono said, it''s a beauty, and I think it would look amazing in something inspired by traditional burmese ruby jewellery (i.e. high karat yellow gold with rich detailing/engraving of some sort).
Hi Stoniegrl! Thanks for the link! Its pretty star ruby with well-oriented star and good size! Can I know if its translucent or opaque? Tia
Ditto the high carat yellow gold with that beautiful stone! Mmm...buttery yellow gold....
amazing stone you have there! I''d want to set it in yellow gold as well.
ditto. i''m not always into the pink-reds of rubies, but this is a knockout!!
I vote for yellow gold. Congratulations on the beautiful stone!
Love it. LOOOOOOOVE it. YG all the way.
Love it! Another vote for YG!
WOW! What a fantastic find! A high karat warm gold would really make that ruby sizzle
Beautiful stone. I''ve never seen a stone with a star in anything other than an oval or round. I like the idea of yellow gold too.
Thank you, all!
This is my next project, will post sketches as available for comments :-)
I agree with rich yellow gold!
