Hello folks. Am interested to know what you make of the following stone. It's a 3ish carat 'brown sapphire' -- this is how it was styled by the Sri Lankan sales heads in Colombo anyway. I can tell the cut is not too hot (some extinction and not very regular), but overall it's a fairly pleasant stone to look at.

I'm wondering what I should go for in terms of metal accompaniment and so on, specifically red or yellow gold -- which tones are better to bring out here? Thanking you in advance!

I can only speak personally...but I although yellow gold is rarely my first choice, I think it brings out the "red" in red stones, so I'd consider a yellow gold setting or at least a yellow gold bezel or prongs/"head" on the setting if you want a white metal shank.

Definitely a yellow metal to go with the softer warm look.

I was expecting to see a dirt colored lump from the title of this thread. The actual image is a pleasant surprise and not all that badly cut either. The extinction in your pictures is caused by the stone having light enter it from the side and with that in mind I'd have to say that it shows very little extinction. In any case you might consider using an color of gold somewhere between rose and yellow gold. Hoover and Strong sells a casting grain that they call "peach gold" which would look very nice with this stone. Here's a link that some horrible pictures of their casting grain colors: http://www.hooverandstrong.com/product/ALL+YCB+++W07+y/ You might do a web query looking for apricot, peach or other descriptive color names to see what some jewelers are calling this intermediate color between rose and yellow.

Folks, thank you for your thoughts, they are much appreciated. I was curious to know if the color was deem-able 'unsightly brown', or indeed, if I should bother setting it at all; so it's good to know it didn't get any of these characters: :o hehe. Michael, thank you very much for your detailed answer, peachy tones sound like an excellent idea. I think it'll be a toss-up between yellow and red or peach. Onto the Google search :))

Aeolianarpa:

I absolutely LOVE that color and don't think it presents as brown AT ALL in those photos, which prompts me to ask - have you seen it in person yet? Have you seen it in different lightings (maybe a brown modifier is more apparent under flourescent lighting)? If you think that is an accurate representation of the color, I have to ask for, ahem, research reasons, :naughty:, did you buy it from somewhere that has an online presence?

Oh, and I second the vote for peach or apricot gold - who knew there was such a thing?

Thanks!

I like that color, very pretty :appl:

Thanks folks -- this makes for very reassuring reading!! Minous, I've seen it on my person :) -- the pics are in normal daylight, and you're right, I checked it under florescent lighting and the brown undertones became more apparent mostly as more peachy hues. If your research interest (hehe!) still stands, this stone was procured from Gamini gems. Their website is a little, eh, perfunctory -- but if you want to brave it over the phone, I found them to be very helpful and accurate/honest in their descriptions. Hope that helps!

Off to (go)ogle more peachy/red pieces ;)
