If you have, did you hear back? I applied for a grant and I''m a finalist as of the end of January, but won''t find out if I got it for a while still. Has anyone else applied this year?

Hey Indy, congrats! What country did you apply to? Research or teaching?

I did, and unfortunately, I didn''t make the cut. I hear that there''s a strong bias towards PhD candidates among graduate applicants because they could use the year and funding to work on their dissertations. Also, that the numbers were WAY up in terms of applications. No idea if the former is true (I know the latter is) but I''m telling myself that to make me feel better

I''m hoping a couple other opportunities work out (law firm in Korea, or a Teaching Fellow position in China), and I''m trying to decide if I want to apply to a PhD program to start in 2011. I really really want to but I have serious law school debt, so I''m kind of scared to.

Good luck with the final application review!!

Thanks BEG! I applied for a grant to Bangladesh. I''ve heard that the numbers are up too, and my advisors have been shocked that some of the applicants from my school didn''t make it either. I have a friend who didn''t make the ETA with a 4.0 GPA, a double major in French and Spanish, involved in on campus activities, and a consistent dedication to community service. I couldn''t think of a better candidate, so I was pretty bummed too.

I applied to law schools too, and its pretty nerve wracking to be waiting to hear back! Any thoughts or advice as I wait?

You might find funding for a PhD program, and you''ll never know until you apply. Good luck on all of your post grad applications!

Oh I didn''t realize you had applied to law school too - good luck! Is this for a 2010 start date? You should be hearing back soon then, if you haven''t already. What''s your top choice? My only advice is - it''s out of your hands, so don''t spend the rest of your senior year (is it your senior year, or are you out of school?) stressing out about it. Instead, go enjoy! Do things you''ve meant to do since freshman year (sightseeing in your city, school events, whatever) and just have a great time. 1L year is a bit of a grind, and you''ll definitely be busy, so really just take advantage of the free time you have.

And thanks! I''m in touch with my favorite profs from undergrad (including my thesis adviser) so we''re discussing my options. If only the academic job market was better!
