Has anyone gotten one of these?

A puerto rican friend of mine with super intense curly hair got one over the summer and LOVED it. Her hair looked and still looks great. I was convinced so I got one while I was in Florida - they're pretty expensive but it is really cool. I'm not sure I took good care of it swimming in the ocean and at wet and wild chlorine, but oh well! My hair is a little wavy and fine but really soaks up the frizz in the humidity and that's one thing this stuff does - NO MORE FRIZZ omg! I don't think it's entirely right for my hair because it made it TOO straight, actually limp. Now that its washing out a bit it's perfect. I got some keratin stuff at ulta to try here once this wears out. From what I've heard it's better for fine hair because it adds some volume... but bad for colored hair. Now, I haven't colored my hair since..... march? So I'm only a little concerned... and I'll let you guys know about that once I do it.

In the mean time - anyone else have any experience with either of these?

It's just been banned here! The Irish Medicines Board have it under review for too much formaldehyde.

That said, I know two people who have had it done with spectacular results.

I knew about the formalde before I did it... the keratin home treatments don't have that.

A friend of mine did this - she bought the materials over the i-net and did it herself (she also had to get a hotter flat iron to make it work). She has little Orphan Annie corkscrew curls -- the treatment gave her a totally sleek look! After a while she got tired of messing with it and went back to curly hair.

I'm not sure of the differences between Brazilian Blowout and Brazilian Keratin treatment but I just got the Brazilian Keratin treatment about a month ago and I LOVE IT!!!

My hair is very thick, dry and curly and the slightest bit of moisture in the air turns me into a frizz bomb. I've been blowing my hair out for years now and rarely wear it curly so I figured I was a good candidate for it in addition to the fact that I have my hair colored and highlighted. My regular hairdresser charges $450 for the process (she would have given me a $50 discount which still was too high for me) so I shopped around and found a place that does it for $150! For that price, I figured I had nothing to lose. The whole thing took about 2 hours but they had 2 people working on me most of the time. I'm sure there was some formaldehyde in the treatment but I couldn't smell it and it didn't burn my eyes at all. I was told to not wash my hair for 4 days as well as not putting it in a ponytail, tucking it behind my ears, resting sunglasses on top of my head, etc. When I did finally wash my hair, I used special shampoo and conditioner with no sodium chloride in it. The results have been amazing!! It takes me about 10 minutes to blow dry now and it looks great. It still has some body which I like because I didn't want it to look limp and listless. Plus, I can let it air dry and it gets nice, soft waves. My hair texture feels different, much smoother. I can go out in the humidity and rain and not worry about looking like a brillo pad!

They say it lasts about 3-4 months, depending on how often you wash. I only wash my hair once a week (using the sodium chloride-free shampoo and conditioner) because it never gets greasy so I'm hoping it will last for a while but I absolutely will not hesitate to do it again once it's totally grown out. As pathetic as it may sound to people who have not struggled with their hair forever, this has changed my life! LOVE it and HIGHLY recommend!!

But Curlygirl...does that mean we can't call you curlygirl anymore? ;(

BKT is what you must be referring to. Being i'm melanin rich and my hair is super curly, a blow out to me means nothing more than a hot arse blow drier and a roundbrush going over my tresses.

With BKT, you don't want to wash as much, and you really should use salt-free shampoos/conditioners so that it lasts a while.

In and of itself, BKT does not damanage your hair, its all the stuff you have to do to make it stick to your hair that can make it kinda knarly looking.

Most of them do contain formaldehyde. Some folks have done the home treatment (I do not recommend this) and have had no issues at all. Some have had some heat damage because you must use a flat iron that is 450 degrees and above during the treatment.

Before doing this, really research it so you know what you're getting into.

My DH drove past a salon yesterday that was advertising "Brazillian Blowout!!" He thought they were saying there was a huge sale on another kind of Brazillian!! LOL.

I just want to say that while I'm thrilled with your success, I don't think that was the brazilian blowout - difference being that with brazilian blowout you can wash your hair immediately - it's a different process. Don't have to worry about the things you mentioned and the price is ridiculously expensive. The Keratin treatment I think is the one I bought at ulta - it's a lot cheaper and I'm thrilled that you had great results with it since I bought several bottles of that :D

I know - I can't help but think of a) brazillians... and b) um, blow'outs' hahahah

Just to clarify - the "Brazilian Blowout" is a trademarked thing, it is $300-$500 in a salon depending on hair type and cannot be bought over the counter without a beauty license. It has formaldehyde and you can wash it right away.

Keratin treatments are a generic thing, the most popular perhaps being "Liquid Keratin" ( http://www.ulta.com/liquid-keratin/ ) that costs $50-$70 over the counter, no beauty license necessary. It does not have formaldehyde to my knowledge and you must wait 2-4 days before washing, being careful to keep your hair very straight the whole time. You can have keratin treatments done int he salon as well for probably $100-$200.

I got the Brazilian Blowout in Florida and bought some of the Liquid Keratin to bring back to China with me since it'll be quite a while before I'm back in the states.

From what I hear, Brazilian Blowout is better for most with super curly hair issues, but that the Liquid Keratin may be better for wave/frizz issues. Brazilian Blowout straightens your hair more than Liquid Keratin does.

Oh - and I got a perm last december prior to moving here and it was half grown out so getting the BB was awesome in eliminating the half grown out perm look. In fact, even if I just let it air dry I have some smooth curves in my hair that look great, I've never grown out a perm so gracefully!!!

The formaldehide blow-out were banned in Brazil, but there are a lot of formaldehide-free variants, with almost any ingredient you can imagine (chocolate blow out, anyone?). I would say that 80% of women around here have some variant of it - straight hair is very, very big (personally, I love my curls). As curlygirl said, it can look too straight on many people but it is long lasting and, if done properly, doesn't damage hair. My sister and my aunt swears by a keratin blow out (professional only, not sold to normal people).

I want it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:blackeye:

How much does it cost and is this the same as the 12 week blowout?

A rang a couple of salons and only one did it and they use keratin. She said it was €195 and took about 2 hours. Is that worth it?

I have to confess, I did not know what a Brazilian Blowout was. I do know what a Brazilian is. So that's what I thought this was about, when I started reading:

I thought well, isn't that progressive?!? I guess you WOULD love it over the summer. And then I read:

and I was like WOW! These ladies really ARE progressive showing off their brazilians. But what does Chlorine have to do with it?? Does it burn or something?!?

And then:
My hair is a little wavy and fine but really soaks up the frizz in the humidity and that's one thing this stuff does - NO MORE FRIZZ omg! I don't think it's entirely right for my hair because it made it TOO straight, actually limp

What? A Brazilian turns the friz straight? Then I kept reading and checked the link.

Hmm. Curly hair, but not the kind I was thinking. I'm almost 40 and I can still feel like such a dork.

I can't speak from personal experience but I'll tell you about my mum's best friend. She has the thickest head of - in her own words - "horses hair" that I have ever seen. I mean it is by far the frizziest hair I've ever encountered. It is unmanageable. Wild. Gigantic. Trying to make it look presentable took hours. Literally. Mum got her the brazilian blowout for a christmas pressie last year and the results are unreal. She's gotten in twice since then. It's really amazing stuff, her hair is straight and the frizz is gone. I won't say it's sleek exactly, that'd take miracles, but the difference is incredible. Her sister has similar, but not quite as bad, hair and she also had fabulous results. She is delighted with it.

The one thing she did say is that it made her scalp dry. Especially in the week after getting it done she said it was very dry and flaky.

omg anne - seriously LOL'd the whole way through your post hahaha, great fun! :)

I went out for dinner last night with friends and straightened my hair - in the past it would have been a futile experience as the humidity from hot pot or korean bbq and sweat would have curled the under part of my hair and pooofed the top part and it would have looked wtihin about 20 minutes like I'd never even blown it dry. Last night at the end of dinner my hair was still straight and smooth.

Another thing it does is it de-kinks quickly. If I put my hair up and it puts some sort of crease in it that would normally last hours or all day, it just takes a few minutes and it's gone.

FSR (For Sheldon's Record - inside joke for another thread haha) I love curly hair and after my daughter I had curly hair and loved it... but now it is back to irregular. Underneath is curlier than on top, on top is wavy in parts and straight in parts, the front of my "bang" area is the straightest and flanked to either side by corkscrew tight curls. It's a hot mess. If I just had curls all over I would love it and when I get a perm I love it, but perms have their own set of problems.

This is a lifetime change for me. I may not keep it up constantly but for example if I was going on a tropical vacation somewhere humid or something I would get one before I went. If I lived in the south it would be constant. Here it is very humid in the summer so I will have it every summer and during the winter we need to wear hats here, it is dry but very cold, and humidity builds up in the hats so I will have one every winter - but I may slack off in spring and fall to an extent.

Oh! So you did get one done. I misunderstood your 1st post. I'm glad it has worked out for you. It is sounding so tempting, I have similar hair issues - without the under curls: Predominantly straight but I have a fringe that insists on randomly turning into a superman curl and the lengths around my ears have gone frizzy for goodness knows what reason - I swear I have normal ears and then the back and top are poker straight...

Hmmmmmmm.

If your hair is like mine, I would try the cheaper version first - if it works great why even bother with the more expensive one? I haven't tried the cheaper one yet... just the BB

Everyone was raving about these, and my hair was frizzy and damaged, so I had one done. I'm not sure what went wrong, but it just made my hair worse. It became much drier, and even frizzier. They say that the treatment is supposed to last for three to four months, but it has been five months for me, and I'm still dealing with some of the dryness. I have had the bottom few inches cut off, which has helped a ton, but it is still a bit dry all over.

I went to a new salon, and they said that they actually used to do the treatment, but that they stoppped because the results were so unpredictable, and because they received so many complaints. One stylist told me that some people loved the treatment at first, but then sometimes they would actually start losing hair. He also mentioned that some people just had bad results from the very beginning.

Some people still swear by this treatment, but it's a big risk to take. I have seen some unbelievably amazing results, and I have also seen (from my own personal experience) bad results.
