I have just come to know that a rich relative of mine used to own some mines down in brazil and had ammassed quite a collection of large diamonds set in white gold or sterling silver. I have 1-3 carat diamonds with FL or IF grades perfect symmetry and polish and colorless with no floresence set in rings and same quality diamonds in 1, 2, 3, and even 4 carat diamond stud earrings. I'm not bragging but am more in the market for someone to appraise and verify that these are true diamonds with the above mentioned ratings. anyone have that kind if ability to rate and certificate diamonds in the bay area for re-sale? I'm in no hurry to unload these. if there are prospective buyers in the area, I will set up a post after the diamonds have all been appraised.

btw. these were sent to me by an associate of my uncle(the ex-owner of the mines) he had a couple quickly verified for quality in brazil before sending up the package containing them. I know nothing about diamonds or ratings and only have written down what was in the letter that contained them. that is why I want the appraisals and quality checked. these were supposedly found in a wallsafe in my uncle's master bedroom. (nice story and diamonds all it needs now is a happy ending)

Yeah it is a nice story...It would be even nicer if it happened to everybody...Lol..

I personally would go with:
Richard Sherwood of Sarasota Gem Lab
Dave Atlas (Oldminer on the forum)
Bill Lerium (RockDoc on the forum)

They are not based in the bay area but I would use one of them based on the broad range of knowledge any of these 3 individuals bring to the field. All three of these guys have up to date and state of the art testing equiptment.
The grade of a truly Flawless diamond commands a premium price. In some cases depending on size 10's of thousands of dollars. I think you give yourself good direction with getting these diamonds appraised. Any three of these guys might either have at one time or could find someone to "move" these diamonds for you once they have been evaluated. You might explore this option due to the resources and chances that they will find a buyer willing to pay a better price. There is a fee, but you will be better off having someone which has access to multiple resources in the trade to do this for you...

How exciting..let us know how things turm out or any other questions you mighthave...

the problem is that I'm only 19 with these diamonds...so I can't go very far or pay too mcuh to have them appraised. that's why I was asking for some suggestions of people around the bay area.

Korean Guy,

You have many options and for what your potential revenue will be for moving stones of the described quality you outlined in your original paragraph it would be well worth it. It would seem silly to worry about the initial investment and doing a little leg work to find a reputable appraiser and broker who can move these stones for you..

If you can make it over to San Diego I hear Thom Underwood is a good appraiser.

Perhaps you could start out by having him perform a simple gem ID first to make sure they're diamonds. It shouldn't cost too much, and if they turn out to be genuine he could go ahead and perform a complete appraisal.

His website and email address is:

http://www.sdgemlab.com/, email: [email protected]

Where is Furthermore when we need him??? If there's anyone around here who knows Brazilian diamonds, it's him.

ooo....is he an expert on the quality and information of brazilian diamonds? I didn't even know diamonds came out of brazil til i got this letter in the mail and then a large heavily insured package containing diamonds. I was under the impression that 95% of diamonds came from the mines in south america. from the...hard carbonite? I read something about that in a book a while ago on the kimberly mines or something. btw, do you think it's smart for me to mail the diamonds to this appraiser to have him check it? it would probably me much cheaper than the 400 mile trip =D

As an appraiser, I would be hesitant to receive a box full of "diamonds" from someone who didn't even know if they were real or not.

I would much prefer to ID them in front of him without them ever leaving his sight. That way, if they turned out to be something other than diamonds, there would never be a question of me having "switched" them.

You need to take the first step of making sure they're diamonds before proceeding further. Any local appraiser and most jewelers could tell you that. You might want to get a second and third opinion if the first guy says they're not, and then offers to take them off your hands for a modest payment. You might consider showing them just one diamond first, while you get a feel of whether you like and trust them or not. If they start to walk off with the stone, tell them that you prefer the stone not leave your sight, no offense intended.

If they are diamonds, the chances are that they're worth serious money, and you would want to proceed accordingly. My recommendation would be to have them certified by the GIA. This will set you up in the best position for selling them. It takes a little bit of money to do this, but would realize you far more money in the long run.

Once they're ID'd as diamonds, I'm sure somebody will loan you the money to have them certified if you agree to give them a nice interest payment on their money once the first diamond is sold.

Or, if they are diamonds, you might consider "cashing one out" to give you the resources to properly sell the others. Sell the smallest, lowest quality one out of the bunch, and then use the money from that one to have the others certified and professionally appraised.

You're 19, so watch out for people trying to take advantage of you. Be smart, and firm. If these are for real, they could make a difference in your life.

they're all kinda big

I wish there was one or two that was maybe a carat or less but the studs are 4 carats as a pair(2 in each ear), and the rings are 3 to 4 carats. but yeah. I'm gonna try and see if a local jeweler will give me some info on how I can sell them or I might just take one to maury woulf in el cerrito. I found his name using an appraisal search and nancy stacy(not sure which order =P) mentions him on her website as another person in the bay area to contact about diamonds. I'll keep you all informed.

they're good friends. I called him up and he said that he and nancy went to school together. we're gonna try and work something out. he said I won't get the best price for them but I will get a nice chunk of what they're worth if they're really diamonds. he said some wholesalers might take em off my hand but because I'm not a usual "supplier" I won't get the best price for them. I'll keep you updated.

Nancy Stacey is in Walnut Creek near you. She is an ASA Master Gemologist Appraiser. Call her and make an appointment. She may not be cheap but you get someone that knows what she is doing and can document it correctly.

Put them in a safety deposit box immediately. Take them out only when you are having them appraised. Do not tell people you have them & do not tell *anyone* except one trusted family member when you are having them appraised.

lol. yeah. that's what maury said. I had orginally been keeping them in a box under my mattress

hey, I was looking on ebay and found a bunch of cheap uncut rough gems. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good reputable company that could measure and cut them to the best shape and size. if you know of any good bay area companies that'd be great. =D

Brazil IS in South America, so technically you are right.

Good luck with the diamonds.

Although I thought the majority of diamonds come from Africa.

Post a pic of the entire parcel. (Lest we think you are full of crap.

I will be happy to appraise them for free via my computer monitor!
