On my boyfriends lunch break today, we went and saw a diamond dealer who makes rings in warehouse style fashion to jewelry stores, commercial and boutique across Sydney. My BF had been given the guy's details from a mate of his who had sold the guy several houses, and even though he does not normally sell to the public he does make up jewelry for acquaintances.
My BF had booked a 1230 appointment to see him. We find the place, unmarked in a suburban shopping precinct area. Firstly we had to buzz our way in through one set of video- surveillance security doors (again no windows so was unsure if it was the right place). Entering into the building we encounter another video- surveillance security door. We walk up a flight of stairs (no people in sight, no windows) and a encounter a sign which says that mobile phones are to be switched off.
Entering through the door we are greeted by the guy known as 'Z'. He directs us through to a windowed office where we sit and wait until he finishes off a call in another room.
We where shown various stones. I had a fair idea of what I could get on the net for the price my boyfriend was prepared to pay ($6000 AUD), so I asked to be shown 0.7 ct stones. We viewed them all under different scopes which showed hearts and arrows, and under magnification. We later looked at bigger stones 1.5ct, at a variety of colours F-K although he had higher and lower ranges too. Then he presented the prices and I could of fainted they were that good a 0.8ct G VS2 $4500 0.8ct H VS2 $4000 0,7G VS2 $3000, 1.07 G VS2 $11000.. pretty low comparatively all were Hearts and Arrows, excellent cut.
We settled for a 1.17 ct J colour S12 ( very eye clean because I can usually pick out the faults) hearts and arrows cut for $6100 AUS. Then we chose from about 100 settings ( even though he could of designed one), the setting a thin band, bead set on shoulders in 6 claw prong, 18kt white gold (cost $400).
So all up the ring cost $6500. Comparatively the same style ring with a 0.5ct F S12 (not H& A cut) diamond sells for $8000 AUS.
So very happy. Well be keeping him a secret, he is too good to be true.
Now all I have to do is wait...
