BOTH of my parents have cancer

My dad found out in June that he had a slow growing prostate cancer; he is suppose to start treatment on Wednesday.

My mom has had blurred vision in her right eye for a few days; went to the doctor today and found out she has malignant melanoma of her retina; very aggressive.

My dad has to postpone his treatment now as my mom''s takes priority.

I am in shock, I can''t even process this.

Having one parent with cancer is bad enough, I can''t imagine the shock. I''ll be praying for your family.

It was Grandparents day at my oldest daughters school today. I got a call yesterday afternoon from my mom that they may be late because she had to go to the eye doctor for this blurry vision in her right eye for the past few days. Then I got a call at noon saying that the eye doctor thought she might have a torn retina, and they were going to an eye specialist at 2:45. My suspicion is that they eye doctor knew right away what was going on. Then I got a call at 3:30pm that they were waiting around for an eye ultrasound; then I got a call at 5:30pm that she had malignant melanoma. I can''t believe how fast it happened.

Now my dad wants to postpone his treatment to take care of mom. They were high school sweathearts, married at age 18 and 19; just celebrated their 51st anniversary on Labor Day.

My parents sacrificed so much to give my brother and I everything we ever dreamed of. They lived in the same small house for 41 years. They just built their dream house at the beach a year and a half ago. And now this. Both of them. The family has agreed that none of the 9 grandkids will know until necessary. So it''s very hard to disguise my feelings.

I am honestly numb. As I just read back my post, I can''t believe this is happening to me. Thank god I work from home, and am the owner of my business, so I have flexibility to be able to help them in any way I can. I called my partner right away and told her, she is willing to take on any extra work and notified our staff so at least work is covered.

Anyone familiar with the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, PA?

I live in Philly and am a medical resident, but I wasn''t familiar with it until just now. A quick google search tells me that it''s pretty reputable and gets high ratings from US News (a credible source for hospital ratings). It doesn''t appear to be affiliated with any of the major university hospitals in Philly (though I could be wrong because it''s pretty close to Jefferson).

My heart goes out to you for this awful news. I hope you get some better news regarding treatment and prognosis. Prostate cancer does grow slowly, and the melanoma may not have spread outside her eye. Try your best not to give up hope.

Wills Eye is a great hospital. It''s affiliated with Jefferson. Ocular melanoma is famous for spreading to the liver... watch for jaundice.

So sorry to hear this.
 
How absolutely awful. I''m so, so, sorry that your family is dealing with this double blow. Do you have siblings you can lean on dear?
