Im looking to purchase from BlueNile and was wondering about their prices. Are they close to what an independent appraiser would appraise them at or should I expect for the diamond to be worth more than what BlueNile sells it for? Thanks
Based on my recent experience, my appraiser told me that Internet vendors typically mark up 10-20% above wholesale, with the larger well known stores around the 20% mark. I''d imagine that''s where Blue Nile would fall. I bought from EngagementRingsDirect and Blue Nile was about 10% higher. My appraiser uses the B&M market for the appraisal value, which he says averages about 35% markup. Therefore, I would guess that the avg diamond from BN would appraise for about 15% higher.
Good response Ben. I totally agree. It would actually surprise me if the appraisal didn''t reflect a higher dollar amount with respect to what was paid for the diamond.
Thanks for the info. I like some of Whiteflashes stuff too, but need the 30 days return policy which to me, was the deciding factor in going with BlueNile.
I just bought a pair of diamond earrings for Mother's Day.
I paid about $1400 at Bluenile.
The appraisal (printed on Bluenile stationary and included with the shipment) said about $2400.
70% higher.
I was very perplexed by this.
It seems this is just how the industry is.
See the thread I started about this on Rocky Talk.
It is named "Appraisal Question".

"Worth" is a funny word.
Does it mean retail or wholesale (what you get if you sell it)
Does it mean Internet price or B&M?
Before or after negotiation?
Purchased by a savvy knowledgeable buyer with good negotiating skills of a naive buyer who just pays what they are first told?
