I came across this ring at a local vintage jewelry store and I'd love to know what you all think! Vendor estimates it at 40 carats. I am lovin the blue & red flash and imagine this as a killer necklace......

Good grief! That's a big, honkin' ring you've got there. What are the dimensions?

I'm a big fan of amethysts. I got my daughters a couple of them recently for their February birthday. I took an inexpensive one to my local jeweler for a sterling pendant setting and picked it up yesterday. But my favorite one is Chrono's. I'm still waiting to find one like that.

Wow that's massive!

The tone is possibly on the dark side which from what I've seen is common in larger gems. I bet the flashes are amazing!

Very pretty flashes -- I can see it set in rose gold as a necklace. As a ring, it's a gorilla! Your idea of a necklace is just great!

Ha ha ha, I was just going to say that! A real, Victorian, oval-shaped doorknob! I can't believe that someone actually would've had that lovely stone used in a ring in the first place and not as you suggest, jbk, as a pendant.

It will make a great pendant, I'm sure.

The pictures show the tone a little darker than in real life. But is is HUGE! The real killer is is its like a ring size 4.5!! The stone looks perfect too. Girdle is clean and no facet abrasions that I could see. How could someone wear a stone that large in a ring? I'd love to know the lady who did!

See, I bet it was just too big to ever be practically warn, so she probably didn't. Just my guess.

Re: Blue and red flash lovers! Opinions on vintage ammy plea

It is in remarkably good condition. I would have it checked out to make sure it isn't a synthetic stone.

Re: Blue and red flash lovers! Opinions on vintage ammy plea

That was my thought too. IF I purchase I would have it contingent on the results of an independent check.

Its a difficult thing to find comps on. Does anyone have any guidance for $$/ct ? I don't have any info on origin (assuming its not synthetic)

Per AJS' website, high quality deep purple from Zambia sells for $15 to $25 per carat. I'm very curious about the origin too because I don't know of any other ammy that huge other than those from Brazil.

Chrono - have you seen Brazilian stones in a deeper/darker tone like this? I think of Brazilian ammy generally as lighter than this but am certainly not all that familiar. Or is it that its tone and size make it more likely to be synthetic? Would an RI be sufficient to determine if its synthetic? Or should I have a gemologist look it over for expected inclusions?

The tone and size makes it more likely to be synthetic. Unfortunately, the RI for synthetic and natural amethyst are spot on equal so that's useless. Thought you might find this interesting for extra reading material. It also mentions Roger Dery!
