Black Diamonds or not???

Hi,

Just picked up my new ring. It's hard to see from the pictures I took, but in person it looks great and is exactly what I wanted with two fleur dy lys on the side next to diamond.

Question I have is I had a black diamond added to each side in order to show off center stone, but now I am not sure if I like the black diamonds. It's almost looks like there is a hole instead of black diamond. So I am hoping that you will share your thoughts and ideas. When I bought it, it had diamonds and he colored them in with a sharpie to let me see how it would look. Only thing is, sharpie marker on diamonds are still sparkly and almost look like sapphire's and the black diamonds aren't sparkly. So it almost looked prettier with sharpie marker...which seems crazy.

So I hope you all can help me out and help me make up my mind.

Thanks
Brooke

Its just one gals opinion- but I am not crazy about the black diamonds, but it doesn't seem like you are either.
You said you liked it better when they looked like sapphires. What about if you actually replaced them with sapphires. Then I think it would emphasize the stone like you are looking for but still have a bit of sparkle, sense it sounds like the static look of the black diamonds isn't exactly doing it for you.

lovely ring though would love to see some more close up shots :)

I agree! I think black diamonds are a bit too lifeless, especially next to a disco ball like your center stone. Replacing them with sapphires would give you the distinction you're searching for while still providing some scintillation.

Beautiful ring, btw!

One of my colleagues just got her ering with black diamonds....I didn't care for it. The black diamonds looked really dull.

Hello,
Thank you all three for your advice and opinion. I did have that idea of putting sapphires in but I'm not a big fan of them so I am most likely just going to have the original diamonds put back in. I'm going to wear it a little more to see if the black diamonds grow on me, which so far they really aren't.
Once that is done my next step is finding a band, which will be difficult because of the pave that wraps around the ring. Plus I didn't want just a wrap because I will wear my band alone. I was thinking of two bands one that is pave with a plain thin platinum next to it that is curved the way of the ring and is worn between the two to make one ring? Does that make sense or even exist?
I will try to get better pictures soon.

Just looked around a little, what about Black Sapphires? Does anyone know anything about them? Would they sparkle?

Thanks
Brooke

Black diamonds do not sparkle-they reflect.Call me old fashioned or a skeptic, I never have seen the lure of black diamonds-especially at the price they go for. Might as well facet onyx or wear a drill bit.

Hi all,

I covered one black diamond to see if it would give me an idea if I would like it better.I originally thought the black made the pave stick out more, which I still think it does, but I think I just like the overall look of a white diamond? What does everyone think?

Thanks
Brooke

I greatly prefer white diamonds. Black diamonds really have little going for them since they don't sparkle. I can see them in fun less expensive jewelry, but not in a ring like yours.

i like black diamonds but not with white diamonds. they have their place and use but in such a formal setting, well, i don't think it works. just my opinion.

have you thought of using champaign diamonds instead? even cognac....that could be a good look.

I have thought about black diamonds as they have gained popularity, and decided I'm not keen. They don't sparkle at all and they just look like onyx, although I think onyx has a deeper, more velvety-black quality.

It seems as if you're after some contrast on either side of your diamond, and since you're not so keen on sapphires, what about using amethysts? They come in all shades, from palest pastel pink to deep, dark purple, and they can look very beautiful, especially next to diamonds. Just a thought.

I like black diamonds but not really for anything bridal. Your setting and diamond is gorgeous and once you place the white diamonds back in the setting it will look perfect.

Thanks everyone!!!

I loved all of your ideas and opinions, I really thought someone out there (including myself) would love the black diamonds. I took it back today and it's getting the original diamonds added back. I guess when they took money off the price of my ring when they added the black diamonds I should have known it wasn't such a good idea.

I also think I will be getting a plain platinum band to go with it, it seemed to add even more to my ring, almost like a frame.
Would love any thoughts or ideas for the band? I want to be able to wear it alone too, that's the only thing, so no wraps.

I will post pictures soon as I get it back.

Thanks :wavey:

Love it, nice job. Glad you love it. Enjoy!

Looks great!!!

Good call on the white diamonds!

Oh wow, it looks beautiful! I really prefer this look, I think you made the right call!

Much better! The black was too much of a contrast and too distracting. Now you look at the whole ring and not the black
holes that stuck out! Good choice to go back to white/clear stones.

I think it looks much better with the white diamonds. Gorgeous ring!

I love the fleur de lis. Very Nice!

Update...I'm having serious buyer's remorse for this ring....so I am looking into options. I love the fleur dy lis and the double claw prongs so I'm trying to keep that part of it.
Should know more on Monday.
Would love advice/suggestions.

Here is something I wrote on the topic in another thread (see below). But the gist: stop wasting money switching settings until you figure out what you are unhappy about with your ring. You can't get it right until you know what is wrong. There is no rush. Live with a setting for 6 months.

But I DO think when you are so stumped on a setting sometimes it means you are stuggling with some other aspect of your ring. Like, a struggle between a desire for a larger diamond than you have and social norms. Or a struggle between wanting flash and being uncomfortable with attention. Or a struggle with how much money was spent, but wanting it anyways. Or something else, those are just some things I have dealt with myself or had friends struggle with. Bling is just fun jewelery, but also laden with meaning and symbolism for many people. And it is also luxury and costs a lot for what it is -- frivolousness.

Anyways, you may not be struggling with any of these things, but its worth considering if you are. I think unless the underlying "bling issue" is sorted out in your own mind it can be really hard to settle on one style and be utterly satisfied.

^ +1!

Dreamer_D, I'm going to copy your post to my computer and if ever the topic of why I initially disliked my engagement ring comes up with my husband-to-be in the future, I'm going to refer to your analysis! That was a fantastic summary of the possible complications related to the issue. Its not just a question of liking the ring design or forms of detail, it can be about so much more! :appl:

Yes you are right. After taking a long time to think of what you said I dug deep and tried to figure out what my issue's are, here is what I have so far;

I thought I did, but now realize I don't like matchy matchy e-ring and band on my hand. I like plain shank e-ring (with a little something around the head) with a diamond wedding band and also I like plain wedding bands. On other people it looks great, just not on my finger.

I like platinum more than 14k.

I would love a slightly larger diamond mine is a 1.01ct. I wear a size 9.25 ring so that could be a big issue that I haven't wanted to face.(I'm looking into this)

I am sick of thinking of rings.

I have been in contact with Brian Gavin and they might be able to re-set my diamond bands in platinum which would really help out so that I won't have yet another ring set just sitting around.

I am going tonight to return my platinum ring and hopefully go with a platinum plain shank and add my detail to it. Or I have been considering a Grace setting from Brian Gavin, which they also can use my detail. (the issue with this is in my head I think I need a larger diamond to have Brian Gavin custom make me a e-ring with my detail added...ugh it never ends)

So, that's it for now....not to bad I don't think.

I saw you talking about that bezeled cushion over on rocky talky, I wanted to throw an idea out at you. If you are worried about the size of the stone on your finger you should bezel set it in a halo. I wanted to show you Dougsgirl ring. If you replaced the daisy with your flour de les, bezel haloed your stone amd left it a plain or split shank plain I think it might solve your problem without getting a different stone and all

Thanks for the great idea!!! I will be checking out that site. Just a note I did go and look at a diamond tonight, found a 1.85 that I really liked. But I also went ahead and ordered a platinum shank and head hoping it will be something like I am now searching for, but I have to admit the Brian Gavin setting is really in the back of my mind, so much that I seem to compare everything to it now.
Thanks for your advice, I'm going to that site right now, sleep can wait a little longer.

Brooke

What Brian Gavin setting did you like??

And had you already decided to get a new diamond too? If you're able to start the whole thing over from scratch ( assuming you want to) May i suggest fancies? I came here with a similar problem a few months back, my finger isnt as dainty as some of these ladies PS, and I wanted to maximize my finger coverage for my budget (under 5000USD). There is a thread on it but basically the advise was a pear shape or marquise in a halo. I had never even CONSIDERED a fancy shape, but when I looked into them i realized i LOVED a good pear.

Heres my setting with a not even ct pear in a bezel. Finger size about 7.25

So if you havent considered it yet maybe look into those shapes? I LOVE that BGD sholdt setting of the EW marquise with the halo and the plain shank
http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/pave-and-side-stones/piper-sholdt-14k-white-gold-5777w14

It would really maximize finger coverage and a marquise is cheaper compared to the same size round. And i dont know if you'd have to have it custom made but you could probably have something similar with a flour de les on it, which to me seems to "go" really well with the shape of a marquise.

I love the Brian Gavin Grace and Split Prong Grace setting. They already said they can add my fleur's to it, not exactly how they would do this because what I'm thinking of and what they would do are probably two different things.
Your ring is very pretty. What type of band do you wear with it? Unfortunately my husband is not on board with a bigger diamond. I ordered a shank and head last night in platinum hoping it will do for now. (settling, probably is a big no no) So for now my plan is to see how this ring looks when it comes in, if it's something I like I may try adding my fleur's to it? (having serious doubt's) Otherwise I will wait and order the Brian Gavin ring when I can. Now that I found the BG ring, it seems nothing else is good enough, even last night when I was ordering the ring my head told me to hold off, I can return it so that's why I went ahead....plus I am starting to realize at this certain large well known named store that I won't mention....when I left I was like what the heck just happened. The seemed pushy and kindof made me feel like I had no choice, I know I did but they just didn't make it a good experience.

So we will see what's next.

So just so I am clear on what you are doing, you're ordering a new setting from the same store, and if it doesnt look good you'll send your stone to BGD? They will then custom make you that grace setting but with a flour de les on the side?

Yes, but it was not from the same store. Yes, if it doesn't look like the one I saw in the store but for some reason they could not just order that exact ring I will not buy it and send my diamond to BGD for the Grace setting. Yes BGD already stated they can use my fleur design. Your thoughts?
