Friends have invited us to a birthday party for their one-year-old daughter next weekend. I am at a complete loss as to what to bring as a gift. What would be an appropriate toy or other gift for a child this age?

I love giving books, thnking of the classics, Good Night Moon, etc... I also love toys by Fisher Price. You can do a gift basket combining the two perhaps. Not sure what the budget is. But I always loved it when my kids got books, as I loved reading to them.

I have a 2 yr old son, and a 1 yr old nephew. We're doing a lot of outdoor toys right now. My nephew just had his first birthday and got a 3 in 1 bike. It goes from a rocker, to a pusher, to a rider. He also got a blow up pool with lots of activities in it (like a ring toss, a sprinkler, etc) and some sandbox toys that also work in the water. If the child doesn't have room outside, there are some really fun water tables, too. And, my classic gift: the SIT N SPIN! never met a kid who didn't love it! And, all of these things can be used for at least a couple years.

Remember, this is the age where a child really starts discovering motion. So, anything that can get her involved in that aspect is going to be fun and educational.

Books are great, if you get some for the parents to read for that age, simple structure, and any developmental toys are great too. There are ones for kids a bit older so they could save those.

hey..my son just turned one and i can tell u from exprience which gifts worked :)

1) a push car is always a nice gift (u can fasten them in, so no fear of them toppling over and they enjoying ''pushing'' themselves around)
2) a swing (those small ones that again u can strap them in)
3) books are great
4) soft building blocks
5) not sure wat they''re called, but those toys that the baby can hold on to and walk around? it has these little gadgets and buttons and sounds and all...
6) a small portable baby swimming pool..those inflatable tubs that come with shades are always great...
7) and clothes are always a good option too!

hope some of these ideas help!

I love educational gifts like books and such.

Books, building blocks, playdoh, ride on toys, baby dolls and strollers are VERY VERY VERY popular at this age. They love to play mommy! Dress up cloths, jewelery, etc. for their creative side. Pretend kitchen items/food. I know my kids all loved to do imitation play at this age of things that I do on a daily basis...thus the strollers/baby dolls being popular. Also stringing beads, lacing cards and beginner puzzles.

SHOES!!! I love baby pumas.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. It has been a long time since I was around children this age, and I couldn''t remember what developmental stage they would be at by age 1. I love books, so maybe I will do a couple of books and a toy. I think I''ll drag DH to BabiesRUs or Target. He''s such a big kid -- he''ll love being turned loose in the toy department.

Lol! I love big girl Pumas too. Unfortunately, I do not know her shoe size. I will so be buying those for my own kid though.

My Olivia just turned 1 on 4/4.

We loved the Mickey Mouse dvd since we watch Mickey''s Playhouse.

Or onesies w/ feet for 18 mos. - they are really hard to find for the older babies for some reason.

Xylophone, or anything that makes noise (musical instruments).

Shoes, she''s walking now and needed/needs shoes finally. Most are sixe 4/5 to 5 at this age.

Hope this helps.
