What's the best service that will insure for this shipment?

DHL.

or you can check into US registered mail, jewelers supposedly use that one.

You buy the insurance from the shipping company that you choose.

I once sent a ring setting to Shanghai, USPS Priority (Priority is different than Registered mail) because it offered tracking and the recipient is supposed to get it within a few days . But it really didn't do either of those things. The tracking stopped once it reached mainland China, and then it took over a month to get there.

If I had to do it all over again, I would use DHL, they have online tracking throughout the China, I've received packages from China with DHL many times. It's pricey, but I think it's worth it.

Be careful to get the full address, Chinese addresses tend to be really long and involved and one little error and it's a mess. Hong Kong is pretty good, though, it's a different (more organized) planet than mainland China.

ETA: duh, you said Canada, didn't you? DHL . . .

Can i suggest Malca Amit ? is there an outpost there in Canada ? When my mom in HK bought her 2.62ct E IF diamond from ID Jewelery, Yekutiel sent the diamond through this service, which guaranteed overnight and landing in the HK Malca Amit location of her choice. There are 2 locations - one in CENTRAL (HK Island), or TST (Kowloon). this is the fastest, safest way to send the diamond door to door (window to window)100% protected. Is there an appraiser in Canada who can do this for her ? the HK recipient just needs to go to the HK location to sign for and pick it up.

From Canada there is no way to obtain private insurance for anything over $2k. No company offers insurance. If I myself wanted to ship something over $2k the only way to do it would be to work witha jeweler to let me use their insurance. If I was shipping it to a jeweler to do work on the ring or diamond I could use my own personal insruance and ship via the most secure method (FedEx for me fits that bill). But if I was selling the item my own personal jewelery insurance would not cover it. Its a totaly PITA.

For insurance, do other 3rd party companies offer insurance? Mail Boxes Etc (US and UK, not sure if it's in Canada) offers insurance at a percentage of the piece's total value. I'm not sure of the upper limit of what they would cover. It's expensive but it covered a piece I had sent from England to the US that was over the limit of every carrier - not hard to do here in the UK, our limit is very low, about £500 / $800 USD.

ParcelPro provides insured shipping between Canada and HK.

They quoted me US$92 for shipping a diamond valued at US$11K from HK to New York. I'd imagine the cost for shipping from Canada to HK would be similar.

I want to jump in here to state categorically do NOT USE Registered mail from the US to International markets. Your insurance stops at the border! I do now know what your insurance situation is from Canada, but I suspect it is similar.

You will need to use a service like Parcel Pro, probably through a client jeweler of theirs, to ship and have the insurance actually valid until it is delivered to your recipient.

Speaking of Canada to Hong Kong, what happened with the post from the girl who's fiance got her the K VVS2 in Hong Kong. Was she able to send it back? I can't find the post, and I remember you gave her some good advice.

I second the Malca Amit recommendation.
I've used them for international diamond shipments.

I'm glad someone else noticed this too! A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post and it completely disappeared and now an entire thread has disappeared that I was also involved in! I was starting to wonder if my computer was totally glitchy or something!!!

Could it have been deleted by the poster?

I agree with Wink about not using Registered mail. I had to return a gemstone to Thailand and I told the postal worker I wanted to insure the package for $900. I filled out all of the paperwork, paid for it and left. When I got home I noticed that the receipt said the insurance amount was $42. They were already closed by that time so I looked up some info online and you can not insure international registered mail for more than a very small amount. And the dude at the post office never even mentioned it when I told him the amount I wanted to insure it for. Luckily, the package arrived safely.

Now I only ship priority with insurance.

Threads are sometimes removed by us at the request of the OP.

That whole thread is gone!?

The OP may have decided to keep the ring, be happy and move on and maybe was scared her fiancé would find the thread be hurt and didn't want the reminder she doubted anything?

It became an interesting discussion for RT though so its a pity it was deleted.

Hello everyone. My apologies for having the thread deleted, I know there were interesting feedbacks/comments, but I was in obvious shock/disappointment and felt TERRIBLE after receiving the different opinions of many PS members, that I felt like I had no other choice but to keep the ring and so I had the thread deleted (I'm SORRY!!! ). I understand everyone was trying to help me get the best diamond I could find and I sincerely appreciated it, but I was just feeling terrible reading all of it. Nonetheless, I felt the need to update you all on my situation.

After back and forth e-mails with the company in Hong Kong, they have agreed exceptionally beyond their policies to return the ring with a special sell-back value by only deducting the craftsmanship fee and a 3% credit card service charge (their original policy is essentially no returns with sell-back value less 10% of the purchase price as well as craftsmanship fee and 3% credit card service charge). They also stated that to assure the ring is in its original condition, the sell-back has to be taken place in the original shop where the purchase was made no later than this year. And so, my search of the BEST way to send the ring from Canada to Hong Kong begins. My concern is also taxes. I'm afraid to send back the ring and have be taxed by Canadian duties. Also, after re-calculating the price of the ring with current conversion rates, It was closer to 9k as opposed to 10k. Do you guys think this is worth it and start over again???

I promise I won't delete the post!!!! My sincerest apologies again!! THANK YOU!!!

if you are not 100% happy with the ring and given the minimal cost returning it, perhaps you should get a refund and start over.

I'm sure the experts on the forum will find you a beautiful one very quickly.

I am unclear why you would owe duty on the value of the ring when you're returning it. Normally, a person owes duty on goods purchased abroad when the goods enter Canada.

(Also, I'm sure that you can find an e-ring that you are happier with for $9k. I hope that you have a fun time searching for it!)

I'm glad you're back! I really thought that thread had spun way off track. I even felt a bit intimidated to say I liked the ring - thought the purchase and proposal made a unique story - really thought the ring looked pretty on your hand and that you should KEEP it and move on with life. BEST of luck to you!!!! I just thought all the angst was ruining the entire engagement experience. May we see a picture of the ring on your hand again? I thought the setting was very elegant.

Thanks everyone. To my luck, my fiance's relative is going to Hong Kong in October and can take the ring for me (yay!). Motown, I appreciate your comment! I do think the ring is very elegant; I just feel that when you've been eyeing something for awhile, it is hard to move away from that.

kat, I'm so glad you've come back. The other thread got off track, and I'm sorry it was such a negative experience for you and I apologize for my role in that. Great news about your relative.

Once you have your refund, I'd love to help you find your new ring.

Best wishes! :wavey:

Just for the record, you would never pay duty or taxes when shipping a diamond/ring OUT of Canada.

Thanks Gypsy!! Much appreciated!! I kind of lurked around still, I couldn't stay away LOL
Anyway, I think I am going to look for an RB to keep some of my fiance's opinion in the ring, besides I love it more than my original cushion cut option! So I'm going to go ahead with your advice and search for an RB in a cushion halo!

I'm also hoping that this "craftmanship fee" isn't going to cost me alot :knockout: ...anyone have any experience with paying for a fee similar to this and know roughly what I am looking at/what it is based on? Thanks!

Oh,okay. It was just that he didn't pay taxes coming in, so I thought that it would be an issue. Thank you!

In HK, that usually refer to the setting fee (not including the gold). I just have my diamond set into a Tiffany style 6 prongs. It costed me HK$2760 (include 18k white gold). If your ring is still in mint condition, and they need not reset it, I wonder what craftsmanship they charge you on.

Thank you GreenBling! The ring has been worn only a handful of times, in less than one month. I haven't been wearing it cause I was too scared to damage it so early, so I took it off each time I came home, and I have been working from home for the past month, so I haven't really gone out to wear it either. I am not an expert, but I am assuming all they need to do is clean the diamond. I do not really know what they would do to the setting. Maybe if they see scratches or something? It is in impeccable condition. Hopefully it won't cost that much because I still have to pay 3% credit card charge! Thanks for your reply!

Kay, was it purchased as a ring, or did your fiancé get the diamond then mount into the setting? If it is the latter, the store may therefore charge you for the craftsmanship (labor cost) for mounting, and un-mounting it. In any case, the best outcome i suppose would be they take it back as is. Hope it all work out for you Kat. Good luck!

Both the setting and diamond was purchased at the same store, so hopefully it will be okay. Thank you!

I am so glad you have a way to return the ring! I am also glad the jeweler is being cooperative! I do think you will be much happier with another diamond! Please come back here when you are ready and we will be very happy to help you decide on a stone (prior to purchase this time!)!
