I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to help me pick the best place to buy my diamond ring. I have narrowed down the type of stone to two choices. The Asscher and the Emerald. Which of the two stones do you think would be best for a man''s ring? The size stone will be between 3.5 to 4.0 carats. The ring it self will be a heavy platinum. Which shape stone do you think will be more eye catching? Which would you pick?

Thank you again!

Maybe its a girl thing, but I think Asschers are more eye-catching than standard emerald cuts. Because they have more facets, they have more fire & scintellation - but as you will hear, in the end, it is purely a matter of personal preference.

I have seen men''s rings with emerald cut stones, but can not recall ever seeing an asscher in one - but the experts will have had a wider range of experience than I. You could definitely make a statement with an asscher -

If you go to a site that has ASET images you can see some of the impact of the additional fascets (and cut) on the amount of light that is captured and returned to your eye.

Others on this site can give you substantially more information, but that''s my 2 bits worth. Good luck - I hope we will see pictures when you decide.

Asscher.

I really like asschers. But I also think you might have more interesting setting options with an emerald, if only because you aren''t dealing with a 1:1 length to width ratio. Bear in mind that carat for carat, an emerald cut will have a larger surface area that an asscher.

Aniother vote for the asscher. Nothing like that mile deep look, to entrance you bring you in... I have one and love it.

Both asscher and emerald cut are beautiful especially in the large weights that you mention which show off the fully beauty of both shapes so you can''t go wrong with either. Men''s rings often feature both shapes though as asscher is less available, Bright&Shiny is right to think that she has seen more designs with emerald cut.

Do you have any designs in mind as that may help you decide as to which shape suits that design best?

I don't know exactly the type of design that I'm most interested in but I do have a sense of what it should look like. I want the ring to have some heft to it, not narrow in width and large enough were a large stone will sit proportionally well.. Maybe a rustic platinum finish or possibly a shinny platinum finish. I've seen both looks and they are quite pleasing to the eye. What I haven't figured out yet is the setting. The designer will have to help guide me through that decision. Any ideas on which type of ring finish would look best for a men's ring?

Hello Hugh

The sort of design you describe should be possible with either shape! As regards which sort of finish: again that is a personal choice and maybe it is one best made once you have seen tried on different designs (whether diamond or not) to give you a feel for what feels right on you and what complements your watch(es) and other accessories.

What I can say re. finish is that platinum does get scratched and develops a dull grey patina over time but is easily restored to its polished state (via the help of your jeweller).

As a first step whilst men's rings especially in large carat weighst are not readily stocked by even the high-end branded shops, nevertheless it is worth looking at large carat asscher vs emeralds diamonds in person (even if they are in female rings) to see if one shape appeals more to you than another. Also, re. design whilst a designer will help you through that process, you too can browse different designs and create a list of what aspects you like/dislike e.g. for emerald cut would you want to set it longways to follow your finger or sideways across your finger so that you give the designer some boundaries as otherwise there are almost an infinite set of possibilities!

Re. browsing designs, D&T has helpfully started a men's ring eye candy thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/mens-bling-eyecandy-folder.116617/

Of course, what a particular particular carat size stone looks on your finger also depends a lot on your finger size!

Thank you Indira and all posters who took the time to offer advise

You''re welcome - please keep up updated as I am sure that whatever you decide will be one that we will all enjoy looking at!

I tend to favor the Asscher a bit, although a great looking emerald cut can outclass a fair looking asscher any day.

Some of the "generic" Asschers (square emerald cuts) can be quite nice looking as well.

I like the "classic" look of a well proportioned emerald cut of the D-E-F range.
An interesting custom design would make for your own timeless and "classic" look.

Sometimes, simple is best, is timeless, is classic.....

Enjoy creating your new masterpiece.

vote for Asscher!

Yah, asscher is nice, however, I think its a bit too busy/too much going on for mens ring. I agree with modified brilliant, a classic, simple, clean, wellcut EC trumps it all for a mens ring! ''Less is More''

I thought Kenny had an asscher from GOG around 2.5ct set in a tension setting, but can''t find any pics! I''m sure I remember others, but am struggling to remember names....

Perhaps the Men''s Show Me The Ring thread will give some ideas on settings?

Ditto on Stephan''s (aka QueenMum) asscher, but I can''t remember if he ever set it or whether it was loose only. Seem to remember he sold it onto another pricescoper?

Put me squarely in the Asscher camp. Pun intended.

Hmmm, I can''t either.... but he did have one.

Here is asquareguy''s Asscher setting, which is probably my all time favorite mens ring.
