Ok guys, just starting the process, and it scares the crap out of me. I want a good deal, but a quality stone. Thinking cushion cut, in the $5-7k range.

My question is, where's the best place for top notch help in selecting the perfect ring (for a n00b like me)? I need hand holding,

This is a good place to get plenty of hand-holding through the process! I've had good luck with James Allen and with Whiteflash. Both were attentive with great customer service.

When I had my custom ring made though James Allen all in all I think we had 90 emails back and forth.

As a customer service representative myself I really appreciated that. I was very satisfied.

Quality cushion? Then Good Old Gold is going to have more top quality cushions (and different types) probably than anywhere else. Plus they can show you comparision videos of the stones. Family owned jewelry store and the people who work there are invested in the business over the long haul. I have had great customer service there.

WhiteFlash is wonderful, too, but they specialize more in rounds and princess cuts for their in-stock selection.

Interesting -- I've found Mark to be quite short with me. I know he is quite busy but one word emails can be quite.. disheartening, let's put it. He did get better as we continued.

What you have to remember, too, is that buying online involves a certain amount of self-service, and self-education. The vendors receive many inquiries daily, not all of them are "buyers," and it's literally a global marketplace. Search the forum, and ask questions here.

There are many varieties of cushion. You perhaps need to narrow down what you are looking for: Size, color, clarity, modern or antique looking, your budget, etc. "Cushions have to be seen" is the PS adage. Rounds are easier to recommend or dismiss, because we have the HCA tool to evaluate them and a list of parameters to help narrow down the search.
