Best home remedy for cleaning diamond jewellery?

I've only had my engagement ring a week and already I notice the diamond looking a bit dirty and cloudy compared to when I first took it out of the box.

I was reading various articles online about cleaning jewellery, specifically diamonds and platinum, but some of the advice contradicted. Some people swore by toothpaste and others said it was abrasive and would ruin jewellery. Is this true? I also read to use Windex but I don't tend to keep that around the house.

I have sensitive skin and would prefer a simple and natural way to clean my jewellery often.

Is a mixture of warm water and white vinegar safe to use on jewellery? I use a lot of vinegar while cleaning the house and would love to be able to use it on my jewellery if it's safe.

Thanks :)

I use a very small amount of dish soap, cool water, and vinegar. I also use a small jewellery brush.

I clean mine every day or every second day at most.

Where would I be able to buy a jewellery brush? Would any type of small, soft brush work OK, like a soft bristle child's toothbrush?

I want to take the utmost care so my ring will look beautiful and last forever.

I use a baby's toothbrush. I also have a small jar of Connoisseur's jewelry dip that I buy at a local jewelry store (about $5.00 to $10.00 per jar). My diamond studs and diamond ring go in there for at least a dip, usually a soak, as soon as I take them off.

An old soft-bristle toothbrush is fine. I use Dawn and warm water - I soak the ring for a bit in the soapy mix and then use the toothbrush on it under running warm water. I clean my ring apx once a week.

If your ring setting is rhodium-plated metal, then I don't think using vinegar is a good idea.

[eta: I corrected myself so the 2nd sentence reads "warm" instead of "hot" water...]

My ring is platinum with diamond pave. Would a mix of warm water and vinegar be safe for this?

From what I have learned, a mix of warm water and vinegar/ammonia is perfectly safe for platinum and diamonds...

For more info, here's a couple of PS threads on cleaning jewelry that I keep bookmarked...

You'll find lots of tips on here about cleaning diamonds. NOTHING seems to clean like my ultrasonic cleaner - no matter how much soaking - baby-brushing I might do. Those diamonds in your setting don't seem to be pave - if in fact they aren't pave, then it's safe for the ultrasonic cleaner. I never cease to be amazed at the difference vs. MY other methods (I can't comment on everyone's - but I've tried many many ways......)

I use my ultrasonic cleaner once a month other wise tooth brush with tiny tiny bit of tooth paste or just water. Or I'll walk into mall jewelery store and they will always clean it

I stopped using the ultrasonic on my wife's ER. It now has pave on it.
I use a little dawn on the ring, a soft brush sometimes, rinse it off and then use the steam cleaner. I have a Sharper Image steamer, not sold anymore. I had a Jewelry Jet, did not like it. I do this about once per month. I use distilled water.

Thanks everyone so much for all the tips!

I'm actually not sure if my ring is pave. Does pave just describe the size of diamonds in the band? Here's my ring: http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER5651PT4JJ

I think I'll try the water + rubbing alcohol with a soft brush for now. I'd love to eventually get an ultrasonic cleaner if it's safe for my style of ring but for now I'll use the simple stuff.

Thanks again!! :)

seems like its a mixture of pave and bezel setting.

I use Weiman's jewelry cleaning solution - it's the best I've found so far. Makes my OEC really sparkle. Once in a while I take my ring into a jeweler for a professional cleaning as well. Really keeps a diamond looking its best!

Hot water + Mr. clean + few drops of Dawn + a baby tooth brush.

I bought a small spray bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol, a bottle of distilled water, and a child's toothbrush with 'soft' bristles (couldn't find a baby toothbrush even in a drugstore).

I sprayed my diamond thoroughly with the alcohol and sprayed the sides just a tiny bit then set it in a glass and poured some water over it. Let it sit around 5-10 minutes then brushed the diamond gently underneath, all over the prongs, the top, and the sides of my ring.

It's so clean and sparkly!

Thanks everyone for the tips :) I'm still on the lookout for ammonia and a baby toothbrush
