I have a ring set I''d like to recycle the gold...

Can anyone suggest a skilled jeweler who can get this done for me?

Local to Houston, or someone online is fine as well!

Thanks!

I''m confused as to what exactly you want to do please clarify.

Recycle gold, and reset the diamonds... a custom piece made from my set. A lot of places that offer custom work, don''t offer the reuse of your own gold... I guess you have to have special equipment!

In order to reuse the gold it has to be refined which isn''t economical for small amounts.

That is REALLY not an issue. It's very sentimental.

Doesn't anyone know of someone?

These guys will do small lot refining but, as Storm points out, it’s not economically viable in quantities under a few ounces. For a single ring quantity, the refining fees will be more than the value of the gold. That said, it’s not such an unusual request and they will work with just about any jeweler in the country.

Depending on how your current ring is made and what you want when it’s done, it’s also possible that a jeweler can directly use the gold without refining and re-alloying. I’m a little surprised that your local custom jeweler isn’t offering to do this. I make a point not to recommend individual jewelers because I think it’s a conflict of interest for appraisers to be doing that but yours shouldn’t be that difficult a request. Keep looking in the custom jeweler circles and I’ll bet you find someone. You might want to aim for one of the smaller shops where the boss is also the benchman (and probably also the bookkeeper and janitor too)

Walker Metalsmiths in Andover NY will recast and reuse gold that you send them. Most jewelers will either want to have the gold refined first (expensive) or only give you store credit and then sell your gold for scrap(loss of sentimental value) Steve Walker is an old fashioned goldsmith who skips all that and loves to use gold that has sentimental value for the person the jewelry is for. He has a lovely range of Celtic design rings and does custom jewelry also. Website is http://celtarts.com/LegacyGold.html
