Hi everyone,

So I've been searching for a certain type of band for quite some time. Both ben bridge and shane co. have items similar to my specifications. I'm looking for a diamond band, channel set, milgrain, 2mm width, same profile height all around, rose gold, and in a size 4.

Shane co. has a band that matches exactly what I'm looking for and is at a price point of $550. They state a lifetime warranty with ability to upgrade; they also state that the upgraded item does not need to be double to cost of the initial item like a lot of other jewelers do. However, my issues with them: 1) they are located in only a few states... and I'm afraid if I move I won't be able to meet their 6 month service requirement, and 2) they've filed for bankruptcy in 2009, and although they are still open I'm thinking what if they close in the future. I won't be able to service or get an upgrade if I choose.

On the other hand, Ben bridge has a ring that meets about 90% of my specifications-- the catch is it's not milgrain and it's at a higher cost than the shane co. ring. The cost would be $720 however I have a pair of earrings that I'm contemplating trading in which would bring the price down to $420. I like that ben bridge has locations all over the U.S. and so moving and keeping up with the servicing required for the warranty would not be a problem. Also, as far as I know ben bridge is a pretty large and stable company. My concern with them is that the price is significantly higher; even though I am willing to do the trade-in which brings it down they're basically asking for $170 more.

Any opinions/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

In general most chain stores warrantys are a scam. What exactly does the warranty cover? And if you miss 1 inspection I bet the warranty is void. I would personally buy whatever band meet all my requirements. The warranty wouldn't even be on the pro side of my decision.

Some people really have issues with Shane Co and, and from my own experience, I really don't know why. I own 2 wedding bands from them and absolutely love them. They sparkle like crazy. And Shane Co's warranty has been fantastic for me thus far. I had an issue with one of my bands last year and the manager at the store in Woodbury, MN had the entire ring replaced free of charge. She went WAY above and beyond. The issue that I had really wasn't that big of a deal, but she wanted me to be completely satisfied. And I definitely am now.

If you don't live close to a store, you can ship it to them, on your dime, and they will ship it back to you on theirs. They tend to use Fed ex overnight or 2 day, but I think you can do what you want when sending it to them.

I know that Shane Co isn't at the top of the list for many PSers, but I cannot imagine my diamond bands sparkling any more than they already do, and I think the craftsmanship is excellent.

Just my opinion. :)

Lovespink, I can only answer some of your Shane Company questions. Their life time warranties are great. They have never squawked about anything I've needed done on their jewelry. The trade up on jewelry is you have to spend double what it originally cost, loose gems or diamonds they just require you spend a dollar more. I have traded in quite a few things and they are nice as can be about it. No hassles at all. I live out of state and they don't say a word about me missing a month or months on getting something checked. As for the bankruptcy i believe they are completely out of it and if my memory serves me right Tom Shane put up his own money to pay off those debts. Obviously I don't know their financial stability but I have been a very happy and repeat customer with them.

I have never dealt with Ben Bridge but my husband likes to drool over their Rolex watches. I can't offer any opinion on them.

marcy - yay, glad you are a happy customer, too! :appl:

Meganmomma, I agree with you. I couldn't be happier with my Shane Co jewelry and their service.

Lovespink, as Meganmomma said I have sent jewelry back and forth to the Shane Co and get it right away. They always ship it FedEx overnight and they call me with the tracking number.

The black mark on Shane Co is their predominant use of EGLI certs. The stones are also not very well-cut, with a few exceptions. Even with that, diamond prices are on par with EGS/GIA well-cut stones.

For everything else, I think they are very good. Quality and price are very competitive. For a diamond band, even if the prices were reversed, I'd say Shane Co is the way to go.

lovespink, warranties aside, how did the qualities of the bands compare?

My center stone is not from Shane co, so I can't speak to the diamond quality there, but I do think their side stones are great quality.

A well-made channel-set band should be trouble-free, and if it isn't, I think the problems would show up pretty quickly. I wouldn't let the warranty factor into my thinking on a channel-set band.

Agreed that a channel set ring isn't high maintenance. I've had a channel set anniversary band from Shane Co for about 4 years now and haven't had any trouble with it. It is very sparkly.

Thanks for all the replies. After reading all the comments I felt more assured that buying from Shane co. would be the right choice and I placed the order yesterday. Now all I have to do is wait 6-8 weeks for the ring to come in. Here's a picture of the ring they had in stock (white gold)... it's a blurry camera phone picture but you can somewhat make out what it'll look like. My ring will look just like this but in a 14k rose gold... I'm so excited!
