Hello all,

So I''ve been reading on my own, the tutorials here and at some other sites, and I think I''m beginning to form an opinion about what I want to give my GF for an engagement ring.

As far as diamonds go, I have a small budget, pretty firm at ~$3500 (which is still a ton of money for me as a graduate student) for both the stone AND setting.

My GF seems to want either a traditional round stone or princess cut in a simple setting, but in white gold or platinum (no yellow gold).

What are the principle advantages/disadvantages of a round solitaire vs. princess cut stone?

The ratings seem to be much more "standardized" for round stones, so I''ve mainly been looking at those.

As far as criteria, Cut is at the top. I want to get her a stone that has fire & brilliance with very good symmetry. I''m willing to compromise on almost all the other factors for that.

Of course, "almost" implies that there''s a follow-up, and there is. She wears a large ring size (8.5), so an absolutely tiny stone will look ridiculous I think. I''m thinking I probably don''t want to go below ~.74 carat. I''d also like to keep the stone "eye perfect", so nothing below SI1 or a very nice SI2. As far as color, it''s my understanding that good brilliance can make up for some color, so as long as it''s near-colorless I think I can be content.

Am I being unrealistic with my expectations? Will I be able to find what I want on a budget?

I''ve searched on sites like Blue Nile (and here), and get plenty of stones in the .7-.9 carat range that are ~$3000, with certs that seem to fall into what I think I want; but I don''t REALLY know what they look like.

Am I setting myself up to be disappointed, or am I doing the right things?

Well, here's my preference/opinion -

H/I/J SI in the .85 - .90 ish range. A stone with a very good make. Not a super duper louper. This will fit your budget.

At least Med. Blue fluor would be a plus (stone may face up whiter) in these warmer colors.

Good luck.

To help you get a larger stone, you could spend less on the mounting (white gold vs platinum).
RD 0.90 E SI1 $3240.00 59.2 62 STK-TK N G G MB 6.23x6.26x3.70 GIA

I LOVE princess cut stones (it's what I have), but in your case I would get her a round as they appear much larger and show color less than princesses. I don't think I'd go as low as a J, but a nice GIA or AGS I/SI1 stone would be perfect! Check out Expert Selection to get an idea of available stones!

Thanks everyone; I've spent the past couple days reading even more after I found the tutorial @ Good Old Gold website.

As seems to be the general opinion here, I'm definitely going for the best cut I can possibly get.

I've been "looking" (online) at a lot of H&A stones as they seem to invariably have good cut as well.

Is it a good idea to limit myself to a H&A stone if I want maximum brilliance & fire? It certainly means a premium for the brand, but as I said initially and others have suggested, I think I'd be perfectly happy to get a H (or I) color SI1 (as long as it's eye-clean) stone that's cut well as long as I can get into the 3/4 carat range.

There's a good chance that my mother's going to sneak me away to her favorite jeweler's (B&M) sometime this weekend to look at some stones in person. Should I expect to be able to ask to see the diamond in a H&A viewer, ideal-scope, etc while there? should I be content if they have pictures? Should I run if they don't, or just make sure of independant appraisal if I do decide to buy from them?

I do believe in supporting solid (B&M) businesses, but I'm also afraid that I just won't be able to get what I'm looking for with my budget if I purchase from someone in a storefront vs. online. I understand WHY a B&M store has more overhead, but I'm not sure it's worth compromising what I want for their sake. Is this something I should even be worrying about?

I would ask the B&M as many questions as you can and want to see the diamonds through these scopes. (They are not expensive, so many B&M's have them IF they carry H&A or ideal stones -- not all carry these.) Not all B&M's are used to educated customers, so it will be interesting how they respond. Some B&M's are recognizing that they need to compete with online sales, so have adjusted their business models accordingly. Some have not. If you want to buy from a B&M, I would let them know what you need to do business with them -- great quality and competitive pricing, along with great service. You can get all of those online (selectively), and you should be able to get them all from a good B&M.

While you are there, take it as an opportunity to look at different colored well cut stones and find out what your eyes can see.

Good luck!

So I've finished my search, gotten the ring, and gotten engaged!

Thanks (mostly) to this site I found a wonderful diamond dealer in Good Old Gold and found an absolutely stunning 0.918 ct "E" SI1 (eye perfect) H&A diamond. I highly recommend them to anyone thinking about going the internet buying route.

Pics can be seen in this post:

Sorry if cross-posting is not allowed, but I figured that would be better than duplicating the pictures.

That sound FABULOUS!

I wish my SO put this much thought into it!
