I found a Gottlieb & Sons engagement ring that I liked at a jeweler and decided to purchase it. The G&S ring the jeweler had in stock in the show room was white gold with a total carat weight for the side stones of .72tw (listed on the ring with the price). I asked the jeweler the breakdown and they told me the round side stones were .18tw and the two trapezoidal side stones were .54tw (.27 each).
I wanted to get the ring in platinum, so I agreed to have them price it for me. After getting over the shock at the increase in the price of platinum over the white gold ring (they said the listed price for the white gold ring was based off of 2006 precious metal prices and that getting it in platinum meant I had to pay the much higher 2007 precious metal prices). I did some research that seemed to substantiate that in part, although I was surprised they would not have increased the price of their inventory to match prevailing metal prices.
Anyway, I ordered the ring in platinum and when it shows up the total weight of the ring was only .66tw (.18tw for the round side stones, but only .48tw for the trapezoidal side stones). I figured there might be a slight variance, but having a tw that was 6 pts light seemed a bit much. I questioned the jeweler about it and they said that was within normal variances for side stones and that G&S confirmed to them this ring would range up to 8 pts (presumably anywhere from .72tw to .64tw). I was never told this when the ring was ordered and there was no attempt to correlate the price to the actual tw.
The jeweler told me that this was a minor variance that would not affect the price and that I was luckly G&S was very precise about measuring the total weight because most total weights are typically not vey accurate for side stones.
Am I making much ado about nothing? Even though they are trapezoidal stones, it seems like having each of them drop 3 pts each is significant. If you could have a variance of up to 8pts in the total weight, then conceivably G&S could leave out a couple of the round side stones and say it is not an issue.
Any advice would be appreciated.
