Ok, this incident has had me so upset I haven't even been able to come onto PS to share my worries. Get ready for a long story...
I took my wedding band and my JM engagement ring into a local B&M to have small sizing beads put in. I have lost a lot of weight but I am not done so I just needed to make my rings tighter until I am done. I was planning to send my ering back to JM to have it resized in the spring. Anyway, I selected a very reputable, higher end B&M. I have had minor work done there before over the years and have always been happy with the results.
When I spoke to the SA I asked her to note on the ticket that the lower half of my ering had a very slight "hammer" finish. I told her that I really loved it and would like to make certain that it remained untouched. She said she thought that the jeweler may not even need to polish that part of the ring. I asked her to call me if he needed to do anything with the outer part of the ring. She assured me that she took all the orders to the jeweler herself and would speak with him.
Two weeks later I went in to pick up my rings. When I saw my ering I almost burst into tears. The entire lower half of the ring was covered with a severe hammer finish. I told her that I wasn't sure that I was happy with what was done with my ring but that I wanted to go home and think about it.
By the time I got home I knew that I wouldn't be able to live with this finish. My DH was very upset when he saw my ring, which made me more upset. On Saturday we made an appointment to go to another jewelry store where the jeweler will come out and speak with you. He told us that the hammer was so deep that it would be impossible to smooth it out without making the shank so think that it would likely crack. He offered to reshank it for me but we cannot afford to pay almost half what the setting cost in the first place.
We then returned to the original store and told them what we learned when getting our "second opinion". He told us we would have to come back on Monday when the SA was working so he could hear "both sides of the story". I took this to mean that he thought that I was lying which really upset me. Then he told me that I should have made sure that the ticket was filled out to my satisfaction. Needless to say I left in tears.
DH went back yesterday and spoke withe the SA. After some go around they agreed to reshank the ring but I am sick with worry about what it will look like. The jeweler will be laser welding the new shank on so it should be just as sturdy as before, I just worry that it won't look exactly the same. I have to see what they do before I try and deal with taking this through our insurance company. I can't afford to send it to JM to fix it so I guess I just have to see what it looks like when I get it back.
I hope that I am just making something out of nothing. They have to want to do a good job simply to get me off their back. Also, I hate the feeling that I would have been treated differently if my ring were worth $50,000.
