Ok, this incident has had me so upset I haven't even been able to come onto PS to share my worries. Get ready for a long story...

I took my wedding band and my JM engagement ring into a local B&M to have small sizing beads put in. I have lost a lot of weight but I am not done so I just needed to make my rings tighter until I am done. I was planning to send my ering back to JM to have it resized in the spring. Anyway, I selected a very reputable, higher end B&M. I have had minor work done there before over the years and have always been happy with the results.

When I spoke to the SA I asked her to note on the ticket that the lower half of my ering had a very slight "hammer" finish. I told her that I really loved it and would like to make certain that it remained untouched. She said she thought that the jeweler may not even need to polish that part of the ring. I asked her to call me if he needed to do anything with the outer part of the ring. She assured me that she took all the orders to the jeweler herself and would speak with him.

Two weeks later I went in to pick up my rings. When I saw my ering I almost burst into tears. The entire lower half of the ring was covered with a severe hammer finish. I told her that I wasn't sure that I was happy with what was done with my ring but that I wanted to go home and think about it.

By the time I got home I knew that I wouldn't be able to live with this finish. My DH was very upset when he saw my ring, which made me more upset. On Saturday we made an appointment to go to another jewelry store where the jeweler will come out and speak with you. He told us that the hammer was so deep that it would be impossible to smooth it out without making the shank so think that it would likely crack. He offered to reshank it for me but we cannot afford to pay almost half what the setting cost in the first place.

We then returned to the original store and told them what we learned when getting our "second opinion". He told us we would have to come back on Monday when the SA was working so he could hear "both sides of the story". I took this to mean that he thought that I was lying which really upset me. Then he told me that I should have made sure that the ticket was filled out to my satisfaction. Needless to say I left in tears.

DH went back yesterday and spoke withe the SA. After some go around they agreed to reshank the ring but I am sick with worry about what it will look like. The jeweler will be laser welding the new shank on so it should be just as sturdy as before, I just worry that it won't look exactly the same. I have to see what they do before I try and deal with taking this through our insurance company. I can't afford to send it to JM to fix it so I guess I just have to see what it looks like when I get it back.

I hope that I am just making something out of nothing. They have to want to do a good job simply to get me off their back. Also, I hate the feeling that I would have been treated differently if my ring were worth $50,000.

Wow. I seriously have no idea what to even say but I really really hope that they are able to return your ring to you the way you want it to be. I would absolutely furious and very upset if something like this happened to my ring ;( Your last sentence makes me really sad. A good jeweler should treat every piece equally regardless of price. Keep us updated. Sending positive thoughts your way!!

Thanks, its nice to be among people who get it.

blackberry, I am so, so sorry that this happened to you. Reading your post made me sad, then angry! I think you should go get the ring back; don't let them work on it until you consider some other options. I know you feel like you don't have any options right now because of the cost, and you just want the people who wrecked the shank on your ring to fix what they broke, but please consider getting your ring back from the jeweler. Contact JM and ask for his advice. I can't believe he'd recommend someone else re-shanking your ring. Maybe consider asking for monetary compensation from the jeweler that screwed up. Or let your insurance handle it. But, please, please -- talk to James Meyer first.

eta: If you decide to allow this B&M to try to fix the shank, at least give them some photos (from your thread?) of the way the original shank looked.

They have already started the repair and they will not be compensating us. We had to fight to get the repair done in the first place. I will just have to see where we are when they finish. Our insurance agent told us that he couldn't do anything to help until we had give the original store the chance to make it right. If it is not done right then we can are going to call JM and see what he says.

The B&M has all of the photos from my thread and I have also got photos of what my ring looked like when I got it back last week. I will post them when I can get the camera back from DH.

How awful that you had to fight for the repair! But I'm so glad they have photos of your ring. I'm crossing my fingers and toes for you that they can fix it. Again, I'm so sorry.

Aww, love & good thoughts to you, Blackberry. That is really upsetting. Horrid customer relations at that store too, pretty astounding. I'm proud of you for making a fuss; many people would've gulped & accepted the heartbreak. Please do contact JM if you're not happy with their "fix." I bet there's a solution lurking out there waiting for you.

Chin up!

Thanks, I am just trying to be calm and remind myself not to panic. I tend to be a "world is ending" kind of girl, so perhaps all will be well in the end. I just love that ring so much it makes me crazy not to have control over what is happening to it! I try to remind myself that they normally do beautiful work and that this is probably just a case of wires getting crossed.

Blackberry, I am so sorry that this happened to your beautiful ring. I have had the exact same thing happen to me. In my case,
after they tried the repair twice, I contacted Martin Flyer, and sent the ring to them and they contacted the jeweler and made
arrangements to pay to have the ring remade.

I hope that you can get the ring fixed. Mostly, I hope for you that JM will remake it for you at the jewelers expense. The jeweler
I went to was a very high end store. I have seen the custom work they have done, and it is beautiful. I never realized that
it is a very different thing to repair than to make a ring from scratch. One would think that if a jeweler can do one, they should
be able to do the other. I don't think that is the case anymore.

I am just so sorry that this happened to you. Please update us and let us know how it is resolved.

I am sorry to hear that you had to go through so much hassle with your ring. I am glad that you are happy with it now. Thanks for your support!

This is a disaster! Id be so upset to ever have someone do the opposite of what I asked. Rude. I'm glad you had pictures to be able to show them what they did wrong. You had every right to stand up for yourself and your ring...regardless of cost.

If anything ever happened to my ring thanks to a jeweler not listening, id be out for blood. It may not be worth thousands and thousands of dollars, but the sentimental value is priceless.

I'm sending dust that it comes back just right and your nightmare is over.

Me too!

I text my DH everyday and ask "Did my ring call yet?"

I guess this is everyone's nightmare - taking a ring to a jeweler for what should be a simple procedure and having it turn out bad. Here's hoping that he makes it right this time OR agrees to send it to JM for an overhaul at his expense. Why did it take two weeks to do this in the first place?

Many congrats on your weight loss and here's hoping for a wonderful outcome for you. It just makes my heart hurt for you as I know I'd be just as upset. Somehow, some way it can be fixed though - even if the insurance company has to pay for a new ring. It's just that the process is so long and upsetting.

I'm anxious to hear an update too. I sent my new ring in for a risky sizing operation and I hope it comes back looking like it did when I left it there--just bigger. Good luck!

My DH picked up my ring last night, I just say it when I woke up this morning. The owner of the store told DH that he took it to a different jeweler and they polished the finished off to see if they could do it without losing too much metal. They weighed it before and after and then called DH to come look at it before they cut the shank off. DH brought it home to show me and I am pleasantly pleased with how it looks, and I am very relieved with the fact that the original ring is still intact. Crisis averted!

I missed when you first posted. I am sorry this happened in the first place and relieved that you are happy with the repair. I understand that customers lie sometimes to get what they want but I get really mad when I feel that I have done everything possible to mitigate against disaster and still I am questioned. Well done for getting the 2nd opinion and your repair.

How terrible! I'm really glad your DH got invoiced, and everything worked out okay. It's amazing how much more respect you get when a guy gets involved, and not just the woman. Hugs! I'm glad everything worked out okay though!

This is so true. I am not pleasant to deal with if I'm unhappy but on more than once occasion simply turning up with my husband has suddenly opened options which were completely 'impossible' up to then. So sad, but true.

That surprised me too! I know far more than DH does but things got done when he got involved. He usually lets me run the show but he knew how upset I was and he told me that he would fix it. While I love that DH took care of this for me I do get irritated that it took a man to get things done in a business fueled by women.

I agree it's sad and stupid that they won't be as helpful to a woman as to her man. I told my SO when we go wedding band shopping that he has to come with me because I know I'll be taken a lot more seriously if he is there, then if he's not. I'm glad everything worked out okay, and your DH got to spread his (what I refer to as peacock feathers) and strut his stuff and take care of his woman. Men need that every once in a while, it makes them feel like we still need them ;))

Ok, so after a few days of looking at my ring I decided that I was really unhappy with what has happened. One side is thinner than the other, the sizing beads are not symmetrical and it looks terribly uneven.

I contacted James Meyer and he said that he would look at it after the holidays. We spoke to the insurance company who spoke to the jeweler who claimed that we asked for the hammering on the ring. So now we have to hope that our insurance company will pay to fix it since the jewelers say that we are liars. I am so angry that such a reputable jeweler would not just pay to have it fixed but instead call us liars.

I am really concerned that we won't be able to afford to fix the ring. Things are tight right now, but I don't love it nearly as much as I used to. I am also in a hurry to fix it since James is semi-retiring and I have no idea if he would be willing to fix it down the road.

OMG...Blackbery, you are so much better than i, because i would ahve went in there, raised all holy Hell, and would have torned that store up, over my ring, and than to call me a liar. O No.......not this girl. Let me say, you are handling it very well. I hope you get your ring back to perfection

Big hugs...didnt read all the post but if they don't fix it to your satisfaction maybe they will pay JM to fix it? Just a thought.
Hopefully you wont have to go there.

Edit - just went back and read your post...so glad you are happy with it now!
