AVR Confusion - Help!

I have a GOG AVR on hold and I need your expertise. This stone has a larger table than most other AVR’s. Other than the flower pattern in the middle of the stone appearing different and perhaps the facets appearing larger, optically how is this stone different from the AVR’s with a smaller table as far as brilliance, fire, etc.? Also I noticed that another PriceScope member showed this exact stone in a setting next to a RB H&R and it looked very dark next to the RB. This is in direct contrast to what I have seen on the AVR videos and from the pic of the diamond that was sent to me.

I welcome your thoughts and comments.

Can you show me the picture you are speaking of??? That does not coincide with my viewing of AVR's at all. This one has a very red center on the ASET, so it must be a reflection of the camera or something.

This cut is my favorite for AVR's definitely. The one I was considering was very much like it but larger:

Hmmmmm. I am not sure what to say about that. One of the stones I had here to look at did turn dark under my kitchen spot lighting. I looked at 3 large AVR's and I only recall one doing that. But I think some ideal cuts do it, too. I am not sure of the scientific reason of why that happens but there are threads here somewhere about it in general. Bottom line, I think you have to see the individual stone to know what it does in your lighting environments.

Part of the problem may be that the stone is just propped in that setting and it may be at an angle.

Thanks diamondseeker. I'm not sure what to do now. If they send it to me I won't have anything to compare it with so I won't know if it's the perfect stone for me or not.

You don't have to compare it to anything. Either you love it or you don't! Look at it in different lighting and see how you like it.

I see your point and I'm trying to wrap my mind around it but how do I know if I would rather drive a Honda Accord if all I ever test drove was a Ford Focus? And if I only test drove the Focus and thought it was perfect but later I saw an Accord I might be disappointed. I'm a "research and compare" girl but once I make a decision I am very rarely disappointed.

But I suppose I can get the stone and compare it to other august vintage round pics on pricescope and the various videos that GOG has put out.

I think I just need to relax. LOL This diamond shopping thing is getting to me!

You can't compare a stone in real life to pictures or video, it doesn't look anything alike.

So get the AVR, then go to a local jeweler to compare.

take the stone and go to a local place that has GIA or AGS H&A to compare.

I think it is more like comparing a Lexus to a BMW or something! We are talking about VERY well cut diamonds! I think the idea is good in premise to take the diamond to a jewelry store to compare it, but I personally think most jewelry store lighting is nothing like regular lighting and I would find it hard to compare there. Not to mention it is awkward taking a loose diamond bought elsewhere into a jewelry store. But that is your best bet unless you can order a second diamond to compare at the same time!

The good thing about an AVR is... if you feel uncomfortable you can always say it is a very old stone. They all are, right?

GOG has made comparison videos in the past. Can you have them line up "yours" and two comparably priced small-table ones and run them through the diamond dock and the spotlighting, daylight by the window, etc.?

I'm so glad I found PriceScope. You guys are great. I agree with you. I can’t see a darn thing in those jewelry stores with their crazy lighting and all the AVR’s sparkle the same on video to my (older) eyes. I must see for myself and compare so …

I am having 2 AVR's sent to me this Thursday; a 1.24 I SI2 and a 1.08 J SI1 (very strong fluorescence). One will have a small table and the other large with a bit of a different pattern. I expect a big size difference but they are both in the same price range and probably close to the same color. I should receive them on Thursday. I’m going to wear them in all different light conditions to see which one sings to me. I will try to take some good pics to send to you because if you are like me you can’t get enough AVR and AVC pics.

That is excellent and it is exactly what I did! I had two AVR's sent at one time and at another time had 2 AVC's sent to me! I was trying to figure out which cut I liked, size, color, etc! It was very helpful!

I'll be very interested to hear what you think and hopefully see some pictures as well!

So I'm curious. What did you end up going with?

At the outset I knew I really wanted at least H color VS and between 1.6-2.0 cts. They were expecting a few new AVR stones in that size and color range last fall, so I was all set to buy one! BUT, when they came back from the cutter and went to AGS, they were all J color! They did have an I color stone that I really loved, but I felt in the end that going from G color, which I have now, to I color (and it happened to be low I color) was too much of a leap for me. So I decided to wait rather than change to a stone that would be temporary. They did have a high I color stone that was beautiful, but it was 2.2 cts and just larger than I wanted. I saw a total of 3 stones, 1 alone and then two together. I do still love the larger table with that beautiful facet pattern best over the newer cut with tiny table. So I am still waiting and trying to decide whether to wait an undermined amount of time for an AVR or just upgrade my current diamond to a larger round brilliant. I'd love to have an AVC for another ring, but I want a round in my engagement ring since that is what I have always had.

Well that sounds like my story a bit. I couldn't decide between AVR and AVC but my heart wanted a round so I didn't even seriously look at the AVC (bcuz that would just confuse me more) but WOW is it gorgeous in the pics on line!!

20 years ago I would see diamonds on little grey-haired ladies and they would be throwing the most wonderful, magical colors. When I went into the jewelry stores I never saw those diamonds and when I asked the jewelers they didn't understand.

During the past 2 years DL and I have been looking and thru research I figured out that what I was seeing in the other diamonds was fire and I read about small table FIC diamonds and I looked at RB H&A and they were pretty but I never LOVED them.

Then one day I saw the AVR in a picture and I knew I had to have one. I just hope it measures up to the vision in my head because other than that one dark pic ... I have loved every one I have seen in video, on line, in pictures, etc and I really hope it makes me want to SING!!

So I hope the 1.24 is perfect because I don't think the 1.08 will be large enough and there are no others at this time that are the right size and the right price.

Maybe you'd like to see some of my pictures, then, to tide you over until they come!

If you'd kept it you'd have always wondered if you should've have held out for a higher colour!!

There's a G AVR in the cards for you - I'm sure of it :halo:

Thanks, Yssie! The main indecision had to do with whether to keep my current stone until the right AVR came in or whether to go ahead and switch to this one. I felt like that would be too much trading, so that is really why I didn't do it.

ds - I had in my possession for a short time a .69 G VS2 AVR from Good Old Gold, I'm exchanging it for a smaller AVR diamond - an E VVS2 - don't care who thinks I'm crazy! I put the diamond next to my Brian Gavin RB Signature cut G VS2 (which is no slouch) and it was simply brighter and whiter, it had the most gorgeous look. From what I've taken in about you, diamondseeker from these boards, I think the whiteness is a look you would adore. I love everything about the AVR but in defence of my gorgeous Brian Gavin stone - it comes to life and sparkle quicker.

Well that is very good to know, polished! Very encouraging, actually! Please post the new stone once it is set! Is it going into a ring or something else?
