Hmmm. Retire from being a SAHM. I spose in about 17 yrs. lol.

DH is trying to go for 62. Considering both of our families live to be quite old, we'll have 30 yrs of retirement which is a lot to save up for! I'll decide for myself If and when I rejoin the work force. Most likely I'll always have some form of a job. I can't stand to be bored.

We are aiming for 50 - 55. Though we always talk about opening a small business after retirement. Also, I know us well enough to know that once we reach our goal, we'll say "if we work another 3 years, we can stash x more dollars away". We're definitely planning to retire before our 401Ks start paying out, though.

I don't. I have no desire to not work. I don't like being bored, and I enjoy working a lot, whether it be school or at my old jobs.

Since I'm going back to school after some years of not, I'll be looking at just starting my career at ~35, if I'm lucky, so I have some major catching up to do.

For various reasons (mostly trying to pay off debts), I didn't even have a retirement fund until about 2 months ago, and I'm 30. I also have a lot of catching up to do! I plan on going back to school and changing careers in about 2-3 years as well, which will hurt the retirement savings as well. So I'm going to be working for a long time! I really can't imagine retiring in my 50's. Even the more wealthy people I know have waited until their 60s to retire. My parents will definitely be in their 70s before they are able to retire, and things are only getting worse for our generation (in the US). So cheery!

Thanks to my pet extravagances, I'll be working until I'm carried out feet first.

We have a financial plan to retire by the time we're 55 and so far we're on track. I hope it works out! We also own a home business so I can't see us giving that up completely until we're much older.

My parents both retired when they were 50. They had government jobs (Ontario government) and they opted to retire as soon as they were eligible. They are lucky because they have very good pensions and were able to keep their health benefits. My dad has returned to work as a consultant and my mother decided to remain retired. He keeps on saying "one more year" but I think he enjoys it too much to quit completely. His official plan is to be completely retired when he's 60, but I'm not holding my breath.

My dad retired at 57 and in the last 14 years he's made more money than he did while working!

If everything goes according to plan (and let's face it, life seldom does!) I will retire as soon as my youngest finishes university.

I have yet to have children at all, so purely speculation on my part!

Having said that, I would like to spend my retirement doing more or less what I do now, but in a proper city with a beach and a deli!

I always figured they'd have to pry my cold, dead fingers off a keyboard at work.

41 with any luck... :Up_to_something:

depending on how you define 'retire'. For me it would be doing something I love so much that I am amazed I actually get paid for it! I had a job like that in the past - sadly only a 1 year contract - and I used to look forward to Monday mornings so I could go to work (and yes I did have great weekends as well).

Me too.

I wish I could retire at 55 (just a couple of years away for me), but that won't be the case.
I'm looking at 65 as my target age, but I may opt out earlier, let's see how it goes.

I have 401K and ESOP shares that seem like a lot, but once I start calculating how long I plan to live and how much I would theoretically need, I always wonder if I've saved up enough, hence the extension of my working life. I guess you never really think you have enough to live out your golden years. With my luck, I'll drop dead the week after I retire!

I'll be able to retire with full benefits at age 55 IF I teach for the remainder of my working days.

That being said, I'm not sure I'll end up teaching for the rest of my working days. I LOVE my job, so I'm going to do it for as long as I love it. The only other thing I love as much as my current job is writing. I could see leaving teaching to be a writer. (No pension benefits there, though! :cheeky: )

This is what my mom says, too. :(sad We're hoping that we can either add on to our home or move to a larger home within the next ten years so we can tell her to quit her job and come live with us. She'll be eligible for medicare in ten years, so at that point her housing expenses will be her biggest reason for needing a job.

I hope 55.. right now it looks like I could.. but anything could change it...

I don't want to retire and quit working all together.. I just want to do something a lot less stressful.. not the corporate pressures I deal with today... 8-)

Like DF, I'm really surprised by the number of people who plan to retire young. They must be living very frugally to do so, and are planning to do the same in retirement.

As long as they've done the math to see that they will have adequate income well into their 90's, I applaud them. :appl: :appl:

If they plan to inherit hundreds of thousands, that's great too! :appl: :appl:

From a personal perspective, DH and I planned to retire when I was 58 and he was 62. We had all the figures in place and a realistic goal, BUT then I became ill and couldn't work. He, on the other hand, is still working at 72.

I think there's saying that goes something like this, "Hope for the best, but plan for the worst." :wavey:

I will retire at age 57 on September 1, 2025. I could retire at age 55, but our health insurance premiums in retirement are dependent upon the number of years of service you are credited with at retirement, and working 2 extra years reduces my premium by a huge amount. Retirees from our system don't get COLA's unless approved by the legislature (which has only been 2 times ever) and the retiree insurance premiums go up just about every year, so you have to get the premium as low as possible when you first retire. I will be quitting the day after I get my magic number in!

I'm planning around 65. I'll probably move to part time in my 50s and then retire completely around 65 when my house is paid off.

Me - 40, DH - 45 :)

We'll that's from corporate america that is. Then we can just sit back, have some part time things but nothing stressful. Only 10 more years, I can make it! We plan on moving to an island too - but we can't decide where. I want St. Thomas or St. John and DH wants Maui. We'll see......

We'll never be able to retire. I don't see Medicare being around by then anyway.

My dad doesn't plan to b/c he and mom dig the casinos.

And really, what I see of those retired around here..maybe it's b/c it's the Midwest I don't know..yeah I like to watch tv and read but..boy I couldn't see doing that from the moment I got out of bed in the morning until I went to bed that night, or sitting at a restaurant all day w/buddies "having coffee".
