Well, instead of resetting my 1.20 asscher I''ve decided to put the 5K towards getting a bigger stone. I''ll probably put it in a simple setting to start. Anyhoo, I saw a gorgeous solitaire today and it got me thinking. I''ll most likely get another asscher because I just love the steps but can anyone post a 2ct asscher and a 2 ct solitaire (pics of rings on hands) side by side for me? Just for a visual comparison.

Thanks so much!

I just saw someone post a 2 ct. asscher on another thread that was 7.1 mm, and my 1.6 ct. round is 7.6 mm in diameter! So a two carat round is going to look significantly bigger than an asscher. But if you love asschers the most, that is what you should get!

apples and oranges.
A asscher is never going to have the light return of the best RB. Low 90% is the best iv done.
A RB is never going too have the kewl patterns of an asscher.

I am working on a round asscher style cut, but it too wont have the same light return of a RB and a look of its own.

I will post pics of both my former asscher and current RB later - I need to run out this afternoon - but I swapped my over 2 ct asscher for a 2 ct RB that''s much bigger and more sparkly - I''d go with the RB. WIll post pics later.

Vespergirl will probably be really helpful for this since she just went through this--I saw she just posted--her previous 2.25 carat asscher and her current 2 carat RB are both absolutely stunning. In fact, I have both pics saved to my computer, so Vespergirl, if you want me to post them, I''m happy to.

My gut feeling for anybody considering an asscher vs. something with more spread and sparkle is to go with the spreadier/sparklier option. I just think that if getting more spread is a top priority, an asscher won''t be the best option in the long run. I''ve compared my 1.5 carat asscher with many, many 1.5 carat round brilliants and I never noticed a difference in size, but I think it''s beause a.) I think my stone is cut to really optimize spread 2.) My brain is wacky and I see square shapes as being larger than rounds and 3.) The differences in spread shows more in larger stones.

To elaborate on my third point, a coworker just got a 2.01 carat asscher and there is very little visual difference in spread between her stone and mine, in fact she thought my stone was 2 carats because they looked the same to her. We compared her stone with another coworker''s 2 carat RB solitaire and you could definitely see a difference between those two stones. Naturally, now my coworker wants to trade her asscher in for a round brilliant, haha.

I''m helplessly in love with asschers, so spread/sparkle isn''t even a factor for me, but I think it takes a special love for asschers to be happy with them forever. If you''re on the fence, I''d say to go with a RB.

I agree with NEL - only certain people appreciate step-cuts enough to be happy with them long-term, without ever feeling a loss over spread and/or sparkle-factor. If you''re not sure now, then you''re more likely to regret a decision for an asscher.

I agree with NewEngland Lady.

I absolutely LOVE my 1.8 ct Asscher.. it measures 6.74 x 6.74 and to me is the most beautiful stone in the world.

With that said, if it is size you are looking for, I''d suggest leaning towards a RB.

I love Emeralds as well and always dreamed of owning one.. my grandmother had an amazing Emerald ring so my love affair started quite early. You mentioned you loved step cuts and are looking to upgrade size - wise, so maybe an Emerald would be a nice trade off... that way you get both !!!!!

I have seen stones that have a smaller carat weight than mine that look and are much bigger, but I was willing to sacrifice size for the beauty and cut of the stone. It to me is absolutely mesmerizing and takes my breath away each and every time I look at it...

So, like NEL said, if your on the fence... go RB... or Emerald....

Good luck and please let us know what you decide !!!

Sorry to be so short yesterday - I have some time to reply & post pics now. First of all, let me say that if you are considering an asscher, you should check out New England Lady & BrownEyedGirl''s posts, because they have some of the most GORGEOUS asschers I have ever seen! I still love asschers, and maybe would have kept mine if I had had a setting with sidestones, but for a solitiare, I really liked the sparkle & spread of an RB, so I ended up switching. First, here are two pics of my asscher that was 2.25 ct F VS1 - one is close up, one from a distance:

Here''s another - also, check out Musey''s post - she has a 2 ct Royal Asscher that is just to die for:

Just to let you know - the spread of my 2.25 ct asscher was about 7 x 7 mm, and the 2 ct RB is about 8 x 8 mm. Here is the RB:

Thanks NewEngland lady. I love my current asscher and will be buying another for sure. It''s funny, I tried on a co-workers 2.66 round yesterday and all though impressive, it just didn''t feel like me. I LOVE the step cut of an asscher. If I didn''t have an asscher I would have an emerald. Thanks for your reply :)

That''s fantastic!! I can''t wait to see pics of the new stone (when you get it, of course)!

Hey Vesper! Thanks so much for posting the pictures for comparison. I love your ex-asscher! great classic setting too. BUT, your round is gorgeous too! Too bad you couldn't have both!!!

Thanks again!

p.s. what kind of prongs did you have on your asscher setting? bead? short goose neck? thx!

Thanks NEL! Jeweler is on the hunt for new stones now. My current stone is 1.2 GIA D super clean (couldn''t believe it) SI1. He''s looking for a GIA G/H, VS2 or another super clean SI1 hopefully around the 2ct range. I''ve decided not to do a three stone like I have now but I''m leaning toward a simple asscher solitaire with platinum band or asscher solitaire with a diamond band.

I''ll start a new thread with some of my favorite setting so I can get some feedback.

I hope we can find the right stone!

p.p.s. did you ever take a profile shot of your asscher?

Whoops, I just noticed that you asked me about the prongs - here are a couple of side shots - the setting is a Verragio Cathedral Contemporary Solitaire. I think they are just a regular prong setting, kind of rounded, but I don''t know what you would call them ... here are some pics - the round is in it in these pics, but it''s the exact same setting, and the prongs are molded on the stone the same way:
