Is this diamonds depth too large for it''s size? Doesn''t seem that way to me, but I was told it was by an online vendor. Here is the exact quote "my gemologist said that it is too deep- you don''t want the weight to be carried in the depth, that would make your stone look smaller." I know it''s hard to determine an asschers quality just based upon the certificate.

Report: GIA
Shape: Asscher
Carat: 0.80
Color: H
Clarity: IF
Depth: 66.2
Table: 57
Girdle: THN-M
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Faint
Measurements: 5.35-5.33X3.53
Length/Width: 1.00

I''m just curious cause they did not mention any depth issue for the following 2 stones I mentioned to them. All 3 of these stones seem very similiar and well cut to me on paper. But they keep pointing me towards already stocked diamonds.

Report: GIA
Shape: Asscher
Carat: 0.82
Color: H
Clarity: VS1
Depth: 67.2
Table: 58
Girdle: STK
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Culet: None
Fluorescence: Medium Blue
Measurements: 5.32-5.31X3.57
Length/Width: 1.00

Report: GIA
Shape: Asscher
Carat: 0.84
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Depth: 67.1
Table: 57
Girdle: MD-TK
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Culet: None
Fluorescence: No
Measurements: 5.32-5.32X3.57
Length/Width: 1.00

Thanks in advance,
John

hmmm I may be going out on a limb here with this guess, but is this online vendor who told you it was too deep...could it possibly be Fred Cuellar's site, Diamond Cutters International (DCI)??

To my somewhat unpracticed Asscher eye, that first one is not 'too' deep...I have seen worse!

Well... so what is the right depth ? And why is it better ?

It would be nice to know how effective are the proportions of those three (brilliance and looks and shape) but the cert does not say that. Most square Ecs would likely be cut deeper - so these are not "deep".

By definition, the Asscher style is a deep cut stone - those are surely not "deep" and not quite "Asscher" - just three modern square emeralds with desirable proportions (as much as it shows on the cert) for what they are.

Of course any seller would push existing stock first - they have already spent cash on those stones and need to sell them

No it was not DCI. Which though does bring me to another question, when you do a search on pricescope for diamonds. In some instances I have seen the same exact diamond returned for up to 4 vendors. So does a wholesaler have most of the diamonds you see on the search for pricescope, and the online vendors are the middleman? Just trying to understand the business itself. I asked my contact about this, and the subject was quickly changed. And what trouble is it for them to actually provide a picture of the diamond, a sarin report and a ideal scope of these diamonds?

I agree with Ana.
Anything under 70% is NOT a deep Asscher.
I also agree that sometimes sellers give out information for the sole purpose of selling what they own- regardless if the statement is true or not.

This Asscher (Whiteflash Expert Selection) looks like a beauty.

It''s depth is 72.4%.
So...

Is it just me, or is the depth on the other two (not in-house) stones actually deeper? Hmmmmmm.....

65%-70% is generaly the sweet spot for good looking ascchers with a few exceptions.
The ones you posted look like a good starting point but the numbers only tell 20% of the story.
You need good photos or see them in person to really get an idea if they are worth buying or not.
