How do PSers feel about asking for discounts on prices posted online?

I understand, of course, that in high demand situations (such as when Gemscoop is posted or a new drop at ACStones) no discounts will be given. However, suppose a stone has been sitting on the inventory page for several months or a year - is it usual to ask for a discount? How much of a discount (10% 15%) before it gets insulting?

I never ask, but occasionally I am offered them.

Margins tend to be slim on-line and I am always prepared to pay a fair price. If I think the price is correct I wouldn''t ask for a discount.

I would just put the general question out there, "Do you offer discounts on any of your stones?" and if they come back with "Well, what stone are you interested in?" or something akin to that, then you can discuss further. I don''t think it''s insulting or hurts to ask. People in the gem/jewelry trade take offers all the time. At least you put the option out there.

The worst a vendor can say is no, right?

I always negotiate.

I say its always worth an ask...

I always negotiate.......... the worst they can say is no. In this economy, I have noticed that many vendors are a bit more flexible in thier pricing.

I always ask whether the listed price is the best they can do. The answer has always been "no". LOL!

Thanks, guys!

I usually buy stones from dealers I know, who spend several months a year visiting the Brazilian mines to buy rough and then having it cut and reselling in SP. With them, I haggle to the death (a good plate of cookies help a lot!). Having them drop by just before a trip is also a good strategy, as they want to move old stock.

I just a bit unsure on how this would work out online.

I usually offer a price to the vendor if it''s been sitting around and I know him/her well. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don''t.

I will have to start asking.

Yes. Also, if you build a good relationship with a vendor, you can just trust him to give you the best price he can (at least, that''s been my experience).

I always ask. You never know until you try!
