So I got this ASET image back for this diamond which costs $4880
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.20-carat-j-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-2617250

I'm not really too sure what I'm supposed to be looking for in an ASET for a princess. It has a lot of white in it but I saw some references that do too, and some that are completely saturated with green/red. Is it a different type of ASET/DIFFERENT machine?

I've also been conferring with the diamond pro and they've been suggesting a I get a higher color diamond due to the side stones of this setting I'm choosing
https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...e-diamond-infinity-engagement-ring-item-41100

Thanks!

The ASET is good. The video shows a lively diamond with lots of movement and life. If I'm being super picky, I'd like to see more red at the tips and perimeter and less of that white mush between the read and green. But, princess cut are very hard to select and you did a great job.

Other options in your budget that show eye-clean and show strong light return, especially at the tips and perimeter.
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-3818574.htm (I, SI1, 1.283; eyeclean clarity and onpar with the JA but you get ACA performance)
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-3782398.htm (J SI1 1.280, great ASET, tiny blemish on table but eyeclean, 5.89 mm}

Relative to the settings, I would have some hesitation putting a J princess in that setting given how close the sidestones sit. Can JA show you the princess you like next to 2 H colored stones? If you drop to an I, you really loose a lot of size (except see the WF I above). Also, they don't have an example with a stone of this size range and I find the 1.0 princess is overwhelmed by the prongs and setting. The 1.5 round looks fine. So, somewhere between those numbers is a sweet spot (and they really really need to refine the prongs).

I recall from your other thread that she picked this setting, but if it were me, I'd rather see you get a simpler setting to put more $ into a diamond. If she would like the setting below, its only $1000 in platinum and that would get you $1200 more for a diamond. You can upgrade the setting for a future anniversary and she'd get a much bigger diamond. With WF, she can upgrade the diamond for any reason (bump color, size, clarity) and you get 100% of cost toward the new stone. JA requires you spend 2X on the next one.

This setting: https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...infinity-solitaire-engagement-ring-item-53313

This diamond: https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut-loose-diamond-3644863.htm {1.615 J SI1, 6.4 mm, see comment below re: setting as otherwise this is way over budget}

If you like the WF diamonds and still want a JA setting, I'd have the JA setting sent to WF to set their diamond.

+1 on the stone in the OP being a good looking stone - lively, nice facet patterning, should be a good performer from what my (inexpert) eyes can see :)

Thank you for the comments! JA said they didn't have a stock of readily available diamond to do what you suggested but they did provide me with a photo of a setting they did with a K setting.

c_DJgHVwekhwps8nlu0-ZvqstORvf2qvrg.jpg

While the yellow is masked pretty well by the rose gold, the yellowish tint is still noticeable, but it's a K colored diamond.

I'm currently looking at other options at whiteflash (including the ones you recommended) and other sits to see what I can find.

Regarding the ring, I do agree the prongs aren't great but I did see in one of the photos in the reviews they had a V prongs and it looked better than the default.

She's pretty picky about the ring and cares more about the the ring overall rather than having a ring to showcase a diamond and prefers the diamond to be more flush hence having the side stones and a not too big diamond (personally i feel like the 1.5c looks large in it). I have been trying to find other ones but its been hard finding similar ones that I think she would like, the only other one being a verragio one on whiteflash.
https://www.whiteflash.com/engageme...agio-braided-3-stone-engagement-ring-1997.htm

I do have some flex in my budget and I doubt we'll ever actually upgrade as I'm sure she'll want to keep it for the sentimentality so it's okay if I end up spending some more.

For now though, I've decided to hold off on the diamond and look for other options as I'm still hesitant about the J color.

If you're not sure, it is a good idea to wait. There are always stones coming on to the market so please do post up when you're looking for another one! :)

Have you looked at Gabriel and Co settings? To be honest, I'm just not sure how I feel about the setting you've picked (I know its not for me but...)
I think you may be able to find something that has prettier lines. ID Jewelry and GOG have Gabriel settings. Not sure if Whiteflash can get them or not.
Would need to ask.

Is she looking for something that looks vintage?

I think these are pretty but I would want diamonds instead of the sapphires...you would have to ask

Well in reference to her tastes, Halos are basically a big no. The only one she would probably like is the 2nd one you linked and another option I was looking at being
https://www.whiteflash.com/engageme...-criss-cross-diamond-engagement-ring-4513.htm

But these are more something she'll LIKE rather than LOVE.

I'll probably end up getting the original one I linked from JA as the Verragio is quite cost-prohibitive (I actually contacted them regarding certain modifications and they quoted me $5150 for 14k and $5350 for 20k) and those were 2 that she loved. I just need to find a diamond for it.

Both of these are still available.

More from JA
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.27-carat-j-color-vs1-clarity-sku-3144808 {better red at the tips and perimeter, so more red distribution than your selection. Facets lively}
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.09-carat-j-color-vs1-clarity-sku-3680810 {different style of cut. More of a bucket of twinkling starts vs. Big facets}

I really like the last option that @tyty333 posted, but if your girl picked the setting you posted from JA than either stick with that or engage with her about another setting. I would not recommend you pick a different setting without her involvement. Hopefully, some of the JA princess options will suit and you can stick with the JA setting.

@tyty333 The 2nd ring looks like a great option. The photos of the finished products actually look a lot better than the computer generated ones they have.

I'm currently looking at some GIA XXX diamonds from JA and submitted requests for ASETs on them. If those don't work out. If those don't work out, I'm considering that ring with the I colored whiteflash that
@rockysalamander suggested.

I've received 2 out of 3 of the ASETs I requested.

~$5,300
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.23-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-sku-3643696
3643696.jpg

~$7,200
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.39-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-4194777
4194777.jpg

The first one has pretty big leakage dead center (due to the knot inclusion it seems) and along the middle of the sides. The 2nd one has less leakage in the middle and overall and both have a well distributed amount of red and green.

I have one more ASET i'm waiting for which would be this diamond
https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.50-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-sku-4294145

So far the 2nd one looks like a good choice?

My other concern was that all these diamonds have pretty thick girdles but I don't think that would be an issue based on the ASETs so far.

Thoughts?

I like #2 (4194777) better than #1. Both have some grey, but #2 is much better to my eyes. I'll be intrigued to see how #3 pans out.

Girdle thickness is really about adding weight. So, it may be that they are slightly smaller in spread for their size, but given how fragile and subject to chipping the corners of a princess are, I would not scoff at a thicker girdle to add some extra material.

Honestly it seems like #2 even matches or is better than some of the super ideal's I've been looking at. I think I'm going to end up going for it before the end of the day
