or do you rush for instant gratification?

I have something of a reputation for being impulsive, only to regret it later. Did you wait until you had exactly what you wanted or did you buy something to keep you going until you could get your dream bling?

Great question Maisie.. :))

For me, it's all about the hunt. Most of my projects take a while, and I enjoy that. Like the oval for instance, took me a long time to find the perfect one. The asscher, well that didn't take long to find the stone, but the setting was a whole other situation and took forever... :snore:

Hm ... I'd say I lean more towards the side of impulsive. My problem is that I want to mark each significant occasion, so the jewelry budget has gone more towards smaller things - eternity bands and the like - over the course of the past few years. Now that I'm eyeballing earrings (and aiming for something between a carat and two carats total weight), I may have to rethink this approach ....

I rush for instant gratification for almost everything in my life....

get hold of PINK now!!!..

I admit most of my coloured stone purchases are rather impulsive. I rarely decide I want an oval pink mahenge, around 1.5cts and look for it, contact sellers and so on. Bt I will snap one p if I come across one that fits my requirements. I do have a mental list of things I want, but I willingly through it out if something interesting comes along.

Some of the few exceptions were my Munsteiner and my barion Mahenge.

I'm in Kaleigh's camp-I love the hunt. Right now I'm thinking mostly about my GOG AVC upgrade and obsessing over how I'll set it and who will do it. I can't even buy it yet but I'm so looking forward to it!

I'm also thinking that I may have BGD make me some sparkly, small, diamond hoop earrings. I've also got a couple of pearl projects in mind and a DBTY necklace (when I can afford it). I just love the anticipation!

I rush for instant gratification from sinfully pink, too! but now we have a new *ahem* "piece" that brings instant gratification!

I take a long time to decide on what exactly I want - I'll sleep on it for weeks or months. Once I've made the final decision, though, I want it and I want it NOW! And sometimes I compromise to get it *now*, and that I do sometimes regret.

I am more like Yssie than anyone else who posted in this thread, thusfar.

TOTAL instant gratification. I should fix this. :P

I have made several impulsive decisions when I first discovered PS. I wanted everything. I have learned my lesson and realize I need to wait on things for a long time, months even to make sure I want it. Last impulse buy is sitting in my jewelry box not being worn.

I don't really have a choice but to be patient since I don't have a never-ending bling fund. ;( I wish I could be spontaneous since I know exactly what I would like to buy.

In general, yes. I can go a long time without spending money and I'm waiting years before buying a pair of studs so that I can get a size I'm happy with. I'm not likely to buy something on impulse or get something smaller than I really want just to get it sooner.

However, once a project starts, I think I get much more impatient and let things fall through the cracks (like design review) because I want to get it done faster. With my ering, I was too impatient and too nervous about asking for extra drawings, etc to make the perfect ring. I just told them what I wanted and have them make it - I ended up having it remade once and tweaked another time, so I wish I had taken more time upfront. Hopefully I've learned my lesson though.

eta: I should just ditto-ed Yssie.

I'm fairly impulsive when buying loose colored stones but I tend to take a long time making up my mind when it comes to setting my loose stones or buying finished pieces.

I am not impulsive at all. I think about the decision for ages. I think I have been very disciplined in chanelling my whole jewelry budget towards my goal for my ring (larger three stone ring) for over three years now! Three upgrades later I at least have the center stone right! I suspect the sides and setting will take a while 8) The only other thing I bought in that time was a half eternity band to commemorate my son's birth.

I did make some mistakes along the way but not from being impulsive, from being frugal ;)) I experimented with lower color and clarity that it turns out I am ok with. Nothing really lost there except time and a little bit of money (maybe a few hundred). I did buy a diamond from a B&M jeweler that I regretted later but was able to sell it to a family member and recoup about 60% of what was spent. I do sometimes wish I had kept that stone to be honest, I would have set it in a halo or a tiffany etoile style ring and enjoyed that a lot. But the liquid funds were very useful at the time.

I'm EXTREMELY patient - which is weird, because i'm not a really a patient person by nature. I guess it's just because i don't get to buy a whole lot of bling. We don't have a lot of extra spending money right now....or have ever had really.

The ONLY diamond(s) i have are in the eternity band i chose for my engagement ring. I spent months and months thinking about what i wanted for my engagement ring.....real romantic right? ;)) My husband knows how particular i am, and just said "whatever you want." I went back and forth between a sapphire three stone and/or an eternity band. I even went as far as to buy fake versions of both and wear them around the house -- seriously, i need help sometimes  I found that i loved the faux eternity band when i looked at it, and didn't feel the same way about the sapphire.

We ordered the ring in October -- i didn't get it until January. It had to be made from scratch, then it was wrong, then they had to redo it. every time i look at it, i think wow - am i glad i was so nutty and bought those faux rings like a crazy person. I love my ring and never want to change it! Unless someday, i can afford it's bigger sister at twice its size :naughty:

Sometimes I think I like the thrill of the hunt more than the purchase. I got money for my birthday 6 months ago for jewelry and I still haven't spent it.

Depends?

Yep, me too.

I have a diamond that I bought a year ago, and it's still unset waiting for its permanent home.

Another ditto for Yssie. It takes me forever to choose anything. You should see me in the biscuit aisle - ugh.

Maisie: Are you hunting for something?

I have to be patient b/c we don't have any money.
