Are you a fast food junkie?

I rarely eat fast food - usually only on road trips where there aren't any other options! I don't really care for it and am not often in a situation where it's easier to get than anything else.

One of the major problems with fast food (besides the other obvious unhealthy nutritional qualities) is the high sodium content. Most options at fast food restaurants are way over the daily allowance for sodium. In fact, this is true at many finer restaurants as well. Whenever we dine out I always request for the chef not to add any (more) sodium to my dishes and if possible to prepare my meal without any sodium at all as I am highly sensitive to it.
great idea- I should ask for no salt added as well .

I don't consider myself a fast food junkie. I would say I eat fast food a few times a month and I don't feel bad about it because I cook healthy-ish stuff at home most nights. A lot of times we go for the non-greasy stuff, like Subway or Jimmy Johns. I also have a weakness for Taco Bell, spicy chicken sandwiches from Wendys, and McDonalds' fries.

Now I'm hungry!

This is going to sound so silly, but I read the BEST road trip tip in a travel mag: Bring a head of iceberg lettuce to much on. Seriously, it is the perfect road trip snack. It's crunchy and refreshing, and for some reason, it fills me up enough when we're on the road that I don't feel desperate to stop at a fast food place. (Although, sometimes I just plain want to. And do. :cheeky: )

Seriously, a head of lettuce. Mmmmm.

TGal--I would be in deep trouble if an In-N-Out Burger opened up near me. I love love love love love love love their burgers. I don't like their fries, though. Well, the two times I've tried them, I didn't like them. But those burgers? I could eat four in one sitting.

I have an in- n-out literally one block from my work. I've only eaten there 2x in the 2.5 years I've worked at this company. They are the only fast food burger that seems "good" to me.

Haven, the In-N-Out fries are a dilemma...TGuy and I are trying to figure it out at the moment. Do we get the burger from INO and then drive to McD to get fries? Or do we just deal?

We have discovered with this opening of this one, that if you eat the fries IMMEDIATELY (and if they are made well that day), they are slightly crispy on the outside. However, the crisp goes soggy very quickly.

We also found out that their hidden menu gives you the option to have the fries "well done". We just tried this over the weekend and ICK! :knockout: They tasted like burnt potato chips...they just go crunchy and do not retain at ALL any soft potato center. This is probably because their fries are made fresh, unlike McD's frozen fries.

We also discovered you can order "whole grilled onion"...for any of you who love grilled onion, this is a must. Absolutely beats the taste of the chopped up grilled onions that most people get when they order grilled onion at INO.

No fries required, about once a month:

Why McDonald's but not Burger King? lol

It's funny - I wonder how many of us perceive one as less evil than the other? I always thought that BK was less unhealthy, but haven't looked at the nutritional facts to see if that is the case.

With McD's, I don't think it's a health thing. With me, it's a COMFORT thing. McDonald's was the only fast food restaurant my parents took us to when we were kids...so I have fond memories of cheeseburgers, deep fried apple pies, McDonald's cookies, and soft serves. So sometimes I crave the tastes I loved as a kid. Taco Bell, Wendy's, etc, is just fast food with no sentimental value. :cheeky:

I've always been anti-big-corporate-fast-food-restaurant-chain, but my SO loves that crap. People vary, huh!
I even get very tense when I have to go into one of those places with him.
I feel like I'm visiting an opium den. :errrr:
Read Fast Food Nation or see the film Super Size Me. :angryfire:

I do indulge in naughty foods from Trader Joe's and Costco or home baked.
Cookies, ice cream, chocolate . . . but my number one weakness is just simple bread and butter.

DH has a bit of a problem with fast food &, as much as I try to fight it, sometimes I lose.

Things I do crave:

* Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich
* McD's Caramel Sundae
* Dunkin Donuts Wake Up Wraps (180 calories!) -- also Boston Creme Donuts but lets not talk about that
* Five Guys Cheeseburger w/Mushrooms (at THAT time o'the month)
* Sonic Lime-Aid & Fried Mozz Sticks

I love Panera though & don't think of it as "fast food" -- their Salmon Med Salad is yumtastic, though pricey.

Fast food is not a problem, this is! Maybe not simple bread and butter but one of the stores I go by on my way to work had these artisan breads and the sourdough with it's crusty top kills me..I think they brush it with olive oil or something it is just so good. They have a petit loaf that is not so petit in terms of a serving size and I will tell you I have been known to buy that and grab a few butter pats from the deli and eat that all the way home, numnumnum I get home and there are bread crumbs all over my car :lickout:

I like some fast foods like mcdonald's or pizza. I think I might have fast food about once a week.

Because BK has terrible fries, of course! :cheeky:

I LOVE McDonald's french fries. Lovedy love love 'em. The only fries that are better are Portillo's cheese fries, and luckily I don't have one of those nearby. We have a local place that has great fries, and when DH and I moved to town a friend told me, "I would push a small child into traffic to get to those cheese fries." Or something like that. A little extreme, but they are really good.

The sad thing is that I've read FAST FOOD NATION and seen all the movies about how terrible this food is. I become repulsed for a period of time, but then I'll get a whiff of that sweet, salty fry smell . . . and it's all over.

I don't eat McD's too often, though I wish I could.

TGal--I seriously think I would consider doing what you describe if In-N-Out existed around here--animal cheeseburger at In-N-Out, fries at McDonald's. The perfect combination.

I am also a MacDonalds french fry lover, I wouldn't say no to a quarter pounder either but my big weakness is Pizza, in Boston we had some from Reginas and it was fantastic - I have tried and failed to recreate it at home. We probably eat junk food once a month or so (two small children, trying to lead by example).

Seriously. Im the same way. CRACK.

I don't really like anything at BK, it's never been my favorite. I don't mind Wendys but it's not one I seek out. I love Rally's but they're getting fewer here lately.

I had White Castles for Brunch today (lol) because it's right outside my orthopedist's office and it's not fair. I enjoyed it immensely!

Another "fast food" we love is La Salsa. I get the Chipotle Shrimp Salad with chicken instead of shrimp and a side of guac and chips, then I mix in a bunch of pineapple and mango salsas. Its the only way I do guac.

I will eat at Subway if we are on a road trip. I just prefer saving the extra calories/money for real dining. DH has McDonalds or In n out once a week...that I know of. :Up_to_something:

I get the Southwestern Grilled Chicken Salad from McDonalds about once a week. It is SOO good for being a fast food salad. We don't have Panera here, but if we did I'm sure I'd get it once a week or so...I love that place. Although I put it in the "quasi-fastfood" category, same as Qdoba, Chipotle, and those types of places. There's also a chain called Daphne's, which is Greek quasi-fastfood. They are only in CA, AZ, and CO, but are SOOOO yummy. Great food that actually tastes like food. I totally agree with the comments on INO fries. Don't get me wrong, I'll eat them, but they are nowhere as good as McDonald's fries. BTW, going to Costco tonight so I'll probably have a hot dog for dinner. At $1.50, it has to be the best deal out there.

Not at all. I can't remember the last time I ate fast food. Maybe it's because I live in London where it doesn't seem as readily available. I do eat out for lunch once a week, but it's usually a baked potato and salad, or freshly cooked Vietnamese. When I go out for dinner it's typically to a fairly good pub for risotto, or roast dinner.

Confession
I ate a Costco hotdog.
Just once, about a year ago.

(I think of hot dogs as bags of filth from the floor of the slaughter house that they hose down at the end of the day.)

When I ordered it they asked what soft drink choice I wanted.
I said I don't want a soda; I never drink them.
Incredulous, they guy said a soda is included in the cost.
I said, oh well then just take it out of the price. (fully knowing he couldn't)
He said he couldn't.

Water please.

Oh, and the hot dog was good, but never again. :knockout:

My DH loves Costco hot dogs and Home Depot hot dogs! He'll eat two of them while we're walking around Home Depot.

As Chicagoans, we proudly eat our hot dogs. No shame there. Unless you put ketchup on 'em, of course. :cheeky:

What if you eat hot dogs with both ketchup AND mayonnaise?!?

I like fast food just fine. Don't eat it too often, don't really crave it. Having a Wendy's combo doesn't send me down a spiral of eating more. It's more a convenience. I can go months without it and don't care, but I also don't beat myself up if for some reason I find myself eating a bunch of fast food because life got in the way.

Unless you're talking french fries, in which case I do eat those when I'm out, just not too often while getting "fast food." I also do crave Taco Bueno when I'm home because it isn't anywhere else I live, and I'll get tacos and a MexiDips and Chips a few times during that week I'm there twice a year.

Barrister SB--Are you telling me that after at least three years in this city, you eat hot dogs with ketchup AND mayo on them? :nono:

:cheeky:

Oh, and to answer your question: No. That is still unacceptable. No ketchup on a hot dog. I'm not even going to touch the mayo issue.

If you want a REAL hot dog that tastes delicious, put it in a sesame seed bun, and top it with chopped onions, electric green relish, sliced tomato, sliced pickle, sport peppers, and celery salt. MMMMMMMMMMMM. The only way to eat a hot dog, if you ask me.

Now I really want a hot dog, thankyouverymuch.

hey at least you have pregnancy hormones that have needs. I just like food.

I get so excited to go to Costco because I can get the dang hot dog and sundae. Couldn't care any less about anything else there.

I can inhale 2 double doubles or 1.5 three by two from In N Out. That is the best fast food I've ever had.

Mayo on a hot dog?! I've never heard of anyone doing that  But I'll have to disagree with Haven about the ketchup! I like my hot dog with ketchup, mustard, and lots of chopped onion. Dammit, now I want a hot dog too (and it's only 8:30 in the morning)!
