Hello all,

I''m trying to pick out a diamond and wanted to see what everyone thought of the specs of one of them. Some of the #s fall out of the AGA level-1 grading that I''ve seen but my jeweler seems to think that some of those numbers are off...

$2,200
0.70 ct princess cut
4.77x4.75
76% depth
69% table ** (AGA says 62-68% for ideal cut, but she said that she thought the best was 70-75%)
Excellent Polish
Good Symmetry
Thick to Very Thick ** (According to AGA this is bad, but she says you want thicker for mounting purposes)

Also, does anybody know any way to determine crown height from the specs that are given on a GIA report? It seems that is a pretty important spec that GIA doesn''t do.

Thanks for the help determining what is good! I''m very lost in this sometimes....

You will have to get a Sarin report to get the crown height. I suggest going to www.goodoldgold.com to read about the princess cut and what to look for. If nothing else, is a great resource! You really need an ASET image to determine the brilliance of a princess.

Not quite sure what your budget is or what you''re looking for in term of color and clarity but take a look at http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3955/
and
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3797/

Good Old Gold will provide you with every report imaginable on their diamonds and have an excellent reputation.

You can also check out the A Cut Above (ACA) princess cuts on www.whiteflash.com. They also come with idealscope and ASET images and you should be able to find something within your budget.

Good luck!

Thanks for the links, I plan on taking a look at them....my jeweler just found another stone that sounded good so I figured I'd post the specs of this one too (and as an FYI, the other one was F/VS2), I had told her to target G-H/VS2 as a baseline minimum since that seems to be the sweet spot for value...

$2190,
0.74ct princess,
H color,
VS2 clarity,
GIA laser inscribed,
4.96x4.75,
74% depth,
71% table,
excellent polish,
very good symmetry,
thick-very thick

Sounds promising.....unfortunately, when I was doing my search for a princess, everyone told me the same thing - you can''t tell a diamond''s brillance by the specs. They are merely a guide. It was frustrating, I know! But I trust the people here....if you can go in a look at the diamonds, that''s your best bet. See what looks good to you. For those buying online though, you need all the other reports to know for sure what you''re getting.

The link http://www.goodoldgold.com/classic/princess.htm is a great tutorial and if nothing else, interesting!

I am heading into the jeweler next Friday to check the stones out in person. Hopefully they won''t disappoint.

I would say the "sweet spot" for clarity is actually SI1 or SI2. I searched for awhile for a princess cut between 3/4 and 1 carat. Initially I was set on F+/VS2+, but I ended up going with a 0.98 H/SI1. It''s totally eye-clean and faces up bright white (also it''s AGS0 so the sparkles make it appear whiter), and by compromising a bit on color and clarity I was able to get a much larger stone.

The crown height is very important in a princess and you should definitely obtain this measurement, or at least get a good look at the stone compared with others. Online vendors like whiteflash.com or goodoldgold.com provide crown height and much more information with all of their in-house stones. Best of luck with your search!
