Hmmm. . . I am hoping to get a solitaire pendant in Nov/Dec, but last night I happened upon the following:

http://www.whiteflash.com/Fine-jewelry/Pendants/WF-Diamonds-by-the-Yard_1142.htm

In ROSE GOLD! Ah, that would be so cute!!! I wish I could swing both styles, but I do have a mortgage to pay & kids to feed.

Wouldn''t the WF necklace be more fun? But, the classic pendant seems more practical for the long-run, right?

Well, take my opinion FWIW because I will admit, I have wanted a DBTY necklace for quite some time. So there, full disclosure.

Are solitaire pendants boring? I definitely don''t think so - one of my friends has one just under a ct and it is so mesmerizing...I stare at it all the time. Beautiful. Never goes out of style

However, I do really really love the DBTY necklaces. There''s just something about them...very elegant and dainty looking and so eye catching. I don''t think they are nearly as ''trendy looking'' as some pendant fads I''ve seen...these have been out for years and years, actually. And don''t look dated at all, IMO.

DITTO!!!!! A girlfriend of mine got one for her "maternity" present in the last year or so, but I''ve eyed them for what seems like forever (at least 1995). I do go back & forth though between wanting a DBY and a bezel set pendant (Lucida baby!!) ... BOTH is the obvs answer but could take a long while!

Hi MC, I have a solitaire pendant of 0.91 ct and it is very simple and understated but in the same time my friends tell me it shines wonderfully. I never get bored wearing it. I also love the DBY necklace ! Rose gold is my soft spot. Actually, I would like both eventually

Either way you can''t go wrong.

How about a diamond solitaire pendant worn WITH a diamonds by the yard necklace? Now that would be a beautiful look.

diamonds by the yard necklace with a large bezel set zircon in the center would be yummy!

OMG, Yes! I have been dreaming about a bezel set solitaire in the 0.8-1.0 ct range on a 16" chain combined with an 18" DBTY with either 5 or 7 0.15-0.20 ct diamonds. Yum. Then I saw the aquamarine DBTY on Tiffany''s website and thought it would be fun to have one of those (or maybe one with alternating aquas and diamonds) to combine with a diamond DBTY. Now that I see WF makes them in pink gold (which I adore) I want one of those too! Ok, so now I am picturing a 16" bezel set solitaire, layered with an 18" DBTY that is either pink gold with diamonds or white gold with aquas, and a 20" white gold and diamond DBTY. Would that be too much? (Obviously it would be too much money, but would it look silly?)

MC, how did you find that DBTY necklace at the WF website? I found it when I used your link, but if I just look at the pendant and necklace part of their jewelry section it is not there. It makes me wonder if they have more necklace options I haven''t seen.

It is on page 2 of pendants. I also LOVE the DBY necklaces! But I think the pink gold, while beautiful, would not be nearly as versatile and timeless as the white gold or platinum. Obviously it would nice to be able to have both pink and white gold! But I'd choose the white metal if I could only have one. It is ironic, but I discovered these earlier today and then saw this post!

But to answer your original question, you can never go wrong with a solitaire pendant. But I'd want a decent size stone if I got a solitaire pendant. This is less expensive and a wonderful, classic, alternative. I think I am going to wear one with my tiny Roberto Coin cross pendant!

Are solitaire pendants boring? No way! But I do love the DBTY pendant you posted!

OMG, Yes! I have been dreaming about a bezel set solitaire in the 0.8-1.0 ct range on a 16'' chain combined with an 18'' DBTY with either 5 or 7 0.15-0.20 ct diamonds. Yum. The Tiffany Aqua DBTY is one of my favorites and I''ve even thought of having it duplicated. There are too many cute styles out there, BUT I would be forever content with a DBTY to wear WITH my solitaire!!!

DMTY pendants are gorgeous. I want one some day.

I have a 1/2 ct. diamond solitaire and absolutely adore it. It is very lively and sparkly and I get compliments on it all the time. It is probably my favorite pendant. I used to think I wouldn''t like one because they are so plain and simple. I bought a 1/3 ct. last spring and loved it even though it was a little small so I upgraded it to a 1/2 ct and love it.

Solitaire is only as boring as the showcase diamond methinks.. d=)

That would be killer in rose gold! I LOVE rose gold so much! Hmm...I don''t think a solitaire pendant is boring at all. But I do think the DBTY has a little more style and would kick any outfit up a notch. I think you need both, really! I''d go for the DBTY necklace first and get the solitaire necklace later if it were me. Or maybe vice versa. I don''t know which order, but I do know you need both!

OK... disclaimer: I am not a huge fan of solitaire pendents -- for ME. With a killer diamond, I truly LOVE LOVE LOVE them on other people, think they are a classic, timeless style and I really wish I loved them on me, too... but honestly, it just isn''t something I am pining for... just not on my wish list. I am really just not too much of a necklace (or bracelet) girl, I guess. (Rings and earrings, on the other hand, BRING ''EM ON!!!

)

HOWEVER, with that said... I must say that that WF BTY necklace sorely TEMPTS me! HOW STINKIN'' CUTE IS THAT!!!??? YUM-O!!! I like the "rounded" way it would lay around your neck, rather than the "pointed" ("V") way a regular pendant would. More of the "choker" look, I guess... although a 16" on me is far from a tight "choker" style.

A few questions... does anyone know how many diamonds are on the standard 16" chain? What size are the actual stones? And what about flipping... I wouldn''t be too crazy about a bunch of little culets showing!
2.gif

But all in all... I LOVE it, it just might have to go on my wish list... and I would get it in plat. Oh, swoon!!!

Lynn, if you look on the Tiffany site, you can see that they have varying numbers of stones, but 7 seems to be a common number. I think it would be nice to have it made with 10 point stones, though.
2.gif
And the matching bracelet would definitely be on my list, too, because I think it would make a great everyday bracelet!

Lynn B,
I have a necklace that is semi-DBTY, and it flips all the time.

Is buying both an option for you? Maybe a slightly smaller solitaire than you were planning with a bezel to beef it up, plus the DBTY? Or work the birthday, anniversary, X-mas angle until you get both?

ETA: I never answered your original question. I think solitaire pendants are classic and go with everything, so that would be my first choice. (And we can all just dream of having one of everything.)

I think the layered look of DBTY necklace with a solitaire looks dreamy

I like CERTAIN solitare pendants and would definitely pick one ofer a Rose Gold DBY as it's more versatile.

For example I would pick WF's BelleIrina pendant or a fill bezel pendant. Those are the only ones that really fit my style. I've seen WF's martini pendant (snlee) and it's SO elegant and timeless... but it's not for me... not unless I suck a 2 carat in that sucker.

I totally agree that ideally I'd want both to were together. The DBY and a full bezel pendant. YUM!!!

I love a classic solitaire which I wear almost daily but I am seriously jonesing for a DBTY necklace ala SparkleDreamers (maybe with smaller stones)...I am considering a larger solitaire too but I just love the DBTY look, it''s like a bit more dressy but not too dressy and can still be cute with casual too. Honestly I don''t think anything with a diamond in it could be classified as ''boring''!!

I think both are great and pretty classic and wearable. Not helpful, I know!

My advice is to enjoy your pendants and necklaces now. I just read Nora Ephron''s book, I Feel Bad About My Neck and have realized that, like poor Ms. Ephron, I have taken my neck for granted throughtout my life. One doesn''t think much about it while one has it, after all! I am at an age where I may be in my final years of wanting to show my throat. Think about your throats! They will not be pretty forever! Wear your necklaces with joy! ALL of them!!!

Arghhh... that''s a drag. I''m a bit weirdly phobic about flipping stones!!!

That would take a lot of the joy out of a necklace for me... and also the bracelet idea (which would otherwise be a AWESOME everyday bracelet, DS!

) If not for the flipping aspect... me just HAAAAATES that!!!

mc, i think both styles are exciting AND timeless, and i don''t think a pendant could ever be boring because the diamond works very hard to make sure of that! i think solitaire diamond pendants were created and are so popular because a diamond needs nothing more to be spectacular! i dont'' think one style is more beautiful/exciting than the other, they just go about it differently. ha! not very helpful.....

i am currently coveting a diamond bezel pendent and have given DH the hint..... i love this DBTY but i''ve only been given slight pause to change the object of my desire. not sure i could tell you why, as beautiful as the DBTY is, i would prefer to have a solitaire and leave the other to the future. maybe it''s that one larger amazing diamond is more dazzling and sink-your-teeth-into-it for me than several small ones? actually in saying that i realize it''s almost the opposite for me - not that DBTY is anywhere close to boring, but it doesn''t pack the wow punch of a pendant, it''s more sweet.
