Are fancy light yellow diamonds desirable?

I have just begun to purchase fancy colored diamonds. I was dissappointed by an EGL report that classified a cushion cut modified brilliant as a light fancy yellow .. I have another in my possession and must make a decision on it. It looks to me as if this is another fancy light yellow but the vendor called it a fancy yellow. It is a shade more yellow than my cushion but I am still thinking it is a fancy light yellow. It is a nice .64 pear shape SI1. Its a nice stone. What would a fair general price be for this and do people generally value a light fancy yellow.? I myself do like yellow. I know a lot of people don't.
If I keep it I would put the two stones in a pendent of sorts. The other is .51.

Please comment.
Thanks,
Annette

Hi Anette,
Generally speaking, the non GIA labs are very soft on grading. In the case of fancy colors, I've seen stones that were legitimate U-V color called Fancy Light Yellow by non GIA labs- that's two shades lighter.

Since it's so tough to grade fancy colors, dealer grading ( without the GIA report) may be inaccurate, in relation to what GIA might give the stone.
That does not mean they are bad diamonds, if the price was right.
If you'd like to post what you paid, I'll be glad to comment on relation to market pricing.
As long as we don't know the seller, trade members may make general comments on stones, or prices.

Hi Rockhugger,
I'm trying to be like you. The cost is $325.00 for the 64 pear. Im tempted to send it back one minute and then tempted to keep it the next.
Annette

That's a very low price, so there's far less to be concerned about, as you've a lot less to loose.
If you like it, and keep it, you can always send it to GIA and see what they say!

Rockhugger? hehehe

As far as trying to be like me.....watch out, it's sometimes a "rocky" ride :wavey:

Hi,

I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else. A young woman over in colored stones always finds the best deals and I thought you were her.
I looked at your site and tried to get an idea from that. I also went to blue Nile who had several fancy lights at high prices. One was $23,000. If memory serves me it was .96 pts. I then thought, I'd better keep this. It was also a pear. The GIA report also stated ,96.
Now that I have you here, I was wondering why the yellow diamonds looked like "crushed ice" I read about on here. The cushion cut I bought looks like crushed ice. Even blue Nine yellows looked like that. Of course not all, but since I read that article by GOG, it just stuck in my head,.

I just started this as I don't like colorless diamonds that much. I bought one .81 pt. yellow, but did send it out to GIA. It is not back yet. I like that one very much. Its really nice.

Funny, I used to like to buy the stones and didn't worry much about setting them. Now that gold has gone up, I could use this money to sett a stone I have or several.

I appreciate your answer, even if you aren't rock hugger.

Longer Ray Path > More Interaction(bounces ) > Weaker white light return and more leakage > better saturation and uniformity of color.
What is least desireable in colorless is most desired for enhancing color.

Hi,

Thank you Chunky cushion cut lover. I have noticed your postings lately, and hope this is not an impertinent question, but, I would like to know if you are a man or woman. Your ring tells me a woman but your directness in answers says a man. Of course it really doesn't matter, but I can't figure it out. Thanks for your answer. It s good to know. You are very knowlegable.

Hi Annette, :wavey:

I am a guy. My wife wears all the jewelery, I spend a lot of time designing projects and jewelry that I hope will be as beautiful as her. None for me except for a George Sawyer Mokume Gane wedding band she insists I wear.

My wedding band is the two tone in the middle.

I don't think I'll be wearing diamonds anytime soon not my style, but this sure is an interesting and addictive hobby.

Regards,
CCl

I have a GIA FLY and I desire it.

Catmom I LOVE your ring. I practically stoke the FLY websites looking for a 2.0ct + cushion in my price range that is similar!

Aw thanks Sarahbear! I hope you find your yellow soon! I was just having some fun. I couldn't resist when I saw the thread title. I have to say that I really never thought I would have a yellow diamond. I didn't really ever like them until I saw mine. Then all I could think of was I want THAT! I have come to figure out that I don't like FY and higher diamonds but I really do like the sunnier yellow color of FLYs.

For that price per carat, as long as it is a real diamond, the only thing you should worry about is if you think the diamond is beautiful!

Hi,

Catmom-- I have admired your FLY on the CS forum. I of couse didn't know it was a FLY. I love all your jewelry, Now that i have you, I'm going to ask the question I have wanted to ask you for a long time. Your jewelry looks so beautiful, I would like to know what occasions you wear these fancy jewels. Do you go to alot of parties? Frankly, mine sit in a safe deposit box. I still love them and visit them once in a while.

Dasha D--(Sp)-- I have decided to keep it, and while I don't know if I would call it beautiful, it is pretty. Maybe if it were 2 cts, I might say the word beautiful.

It has been pd for and I will send it to GIA when finances allow.

Thank You All,
Annette

Thank you Annette, that's so kind of you to say and no, I don't go to a lot of parties. My philosophy is why have it if I'm not going to wear it so I wear them every day. Not all at once though, lol, especially with how things are these days but I'll wear a piece or two with some more understated pieces if I'm out in public. If I'm home, all bets are off and I'll glam it up big time. There's nothing like wearing my complete sapphire set to clean the cat boxes.

It is probably not worth sending it to GIA since I think a full cert from them costs close to $200. Best just to have it and enjoy!

And post pictures

Hey Annette,

I loveeee fancy yellow diamonds, they are like a little burst of sunshine! I find that they are rising in popularity as well. GIA really is best in certifying them correctly. Enjoy yours and you can always slowly upgrade until you get to the fancy intense yellow!!! :appl:

I love yellow diamonds! Would love to see a picture of your newby :)

I have a pear that is a W to X in color. In my opinion displays just as nice body color as a light fancy yellow without the "tag", so the price tag is more bearable!

Hi,

Thanks to all who answered. I am happy to hear yellow diamonds are becoming more popular.

Cat woman--I thought maybe you were on a hospital board where you had charity benefits to go to. You know the Balls for the rich.
I make up stories about people--My fantasy about you was that you go to the fancy balls with your fancy jewels and dance the night away. Oh Well.

Daisha--A grading report cost $147.00
an ID &origin report costs $100.

Amythest--I would like to see the color of your W. I have not seen them before.

The bad news is that I do not know how to post pictures so I'm a bit limited in my participation in some forums. I don't even have a camera. But I learn from others.

Thanks.
