Does anyone have great sites to visit for Aqua? I am looking at thaigem.com and they have some nice ones...but I am not sure what to look for.

Some of the more striking colorful stones like the spess and the tourmalines, the ''cut'' of the stone, and individual facets seem to show up very vividly with it...but with paler stone like a swimming pool aqua...is the cut going to show up at all when viewed, especially in something like a halo setting?

What is the BEST way to show off the color of an aqua with a cut? I am looking at a cushion cut swimming pool blue, clean, in 9mm sizing...does it sound acceptable so far? Or what else should I be looking for?

micheal e from the board might have some left of the very nice rough he had and has cut for others.
If so thats the route id go.
He can also answer your cut questions.

Richard M may have some available also.

So besides Michael E....any ideas on where to find the deeper hued aquas online? I''d like to see some color variations in comparison.

I cant find it but val posted a callage of aque in a thread here a while back maybe she still has it.
It showed a bunch of different colored aqua.
Might try a PM to her.

I would say Tiffany''s my father bought me a lovely one for my 16th birthday and my mother some lovlies as well. We are both March babies. As of yet I have never seen another Aquamarine like the one my father gave me. It is just so blue!

Here is a very nice aqua spescimen I found online

cut... not step cut: it works, but the very light material does not look great in it. It can't be impossible to find an aqua showing nice color either by nature or cut or both. I wouldn't know to name a cut because allot of sucessful nameless fancy ones are done on aquamarine. Did you see the one Michael E. cut for Widget ?

And this (LINK).

Ana....Your memory never ceases to amaze me!

Mara: Here''s pictures of the rough Michael E chose for my project, (the darker crystal on the right), and the cut mounted stone.

He called this a "modified Barion cut". I was astonished how bright and lively the aqua turned out...

Here''s some from Palagems.com for color comparison:

awesome, thanks everyone...i have NO IDEA about colored stones and always feel like I am a total novice when I think about a colored stone project. Usually I get too overwhelmed about not knowing what to do, and then just nix it, so much easier for me to choose diamonds. But we''ll see...I would love an aqua in a halo RHR...

Speaking of Tiffany''s...I posted my absolute favorite of all time in a previous thread, 50k worth of diamonds and a big ole aqua in the most heavenly color...I will have to find it and repost it here.

I really like that concave cut pear Velouria posted in the middle there....YUM. Does that seem like a nice color...what about with a halo like Matatora''s ring??

Mara, i don''t think its necessary to buy a world class aqua to get a good one but having read your posts re diamonds, i find it hard to believe that you will be happy with a thiagem.com aqua....especially if you''re going to set it with diamonds.

can''t believe i just wrote that. when did i get to be picky about gems?! oh, yeah, it was when i started lurking around pricescope.....

that pear is indeed scrumptious!

peace, movie zombie

Do you mean my aquamarine ring or the blue topaz?

You have an aquamarine ring? How did I miss that?! I meant your topaz pear with the halo!

I''d actually love something like a squarish stone, whether it be step cut or radiant squarish or cushion squarish in an aquamarine, and surround it with a halo, but the squarish aquas seem pretty hard to find. I definitely like the darker colors over the more common pale aquas, but don''t want to pay too much.
That pear is a nice price and the color seems amazing.

If anyone else comes across some squarish med bluish aquas let me know!! I really liked the inventory at acstones.com out of all the others so far. OF COURSE, the more expensive stuff, I think it''s ingrained.

16th Bday Thread This is a thread I did using my parents scanner... But aquamarine is my birthstone. My father gave me that ring for my 16th Birthday and it is my favorite piece of jewelry. I have never seen another aquamarine like it.

And here is the fabulous picture!

I think that is lovely,b ut why not just get a topas if that is the color you are going to get? Arent they less expensive?

MJO ! That one surely looks like a find matching Mara's Tiffany benchmark.

Mara, it may be easier to find such color in a large piece, because the volume helps. But small ones should be out there too. Have you passed by Fay lately ? This one carries a rather nice stone - perhaps not as deep colored as MJO's but of interesting shape (asscher) and about the size you want. No comment on the very retro white gold bulk around it though... please ignore the ring around the aqua

How about a blue version of the ring in your current avatar ?

Also, perhaps take a look HERE

the pear is better color, they say. Perhaps not quite like
11 x 8 mm 7 x 7 mm MJO's find, but ...

Just for refference, there is a good (IMO) presentation of aquamarine colors on Kenneth Glasser's site HERE. The grades named there (A2, B3, etc) are not universal. There is better than the best stones pictured there (and none received the top grade anyway) and a couple of such things are presented on Richard Wise's site and book. His are completely over the top !

Perhaps there is more where those come from - worth asking, IMO.

Have you considered zircon?
imho better blues and its nearly as sparky as diamonds.
I saw a light blue the other day that you would swear was a $100000 blue diamond it was so fiery.

Have you considered zircon?
Yeah !

Have you tried to take a look down the link to GemLine MJO posted ? There are some wonderfully blue zircons on their list now. At such cost, it is worth buying one just to see what they look like ... completely different matter than top aquamarine.

thumb_826.jpg

AJS had its fair share too last time I looked. It is allot easier to get stronger aqua blue color in somewhat better than average blue zircon rather than hunt for the best of aquamarine.

Is it at all done to look for a certain color rather than a specific material ?

Anyway, I just remembered this one:
1128sm.jpg

If the pictures is true to nature, this one is more "blue beryl" than aquamarine with such unusual depth of blue...

I like that 7x7 asscher cut you posted Val...where is that from?? Is it aqua?

I would love an asscher cut gemstone on a version of my avatar, but with a halo too!

I love blues, and my range is pretty large but that Tiffany blue one just struck me years ago and I love the color constrast between that deep bright blue and the sparkly diamonds.

In terms of why aquamarine, mostly because of that Tiffany one but it seems that is a rare color in aquas? I am not averse to zircon or topaz...at this point it may be more about the shape and how to get the gemstone to sparkle alot...Strm your idea of zircon is interesting! I also don''t want to pay too much for a gemstone, gotta save the big bucks for diamonds yanno!

That eBay stone is simply beautiful...but I wish it was cheaper.

Or who knows, for the right stone, I could magically increase budget. Whatever that is...haven''t even decided...just researching now.

yes

beryl is not that brilliant - the main virtue of these stones is color. Zircon is allot brighter & cheaper than equally deep colored aquamarine.

That eBay stone is simply beautiful...

second that ! Twice !!

Happy hunting
