What is a typical price for an apprasial of a diamond. I''m located in Minneapolis MN. Just trying to get a rough idea of the cost. Thanks for any feedback.

Not that my geographic location compares, but here on Long Island, NY I paid the best $125 I ever spent to have Barry Block, The Jewelry Judge, appraise my 2.21 ct omc. He and his associate Joseph spent almost an hour with me, and I felt better informed about diamonds in general when I left there (even though PS is an amazing resource, there is nothing like spending time with an expert in person!)

I have been told that some appraisers charge by the hour, some by the carat weight (I believe this is how Mr. Block billed,) some by the complexity required and a few actually dependant upon the final appraisal price!

There is a place on PS to look for appraisers in your area and some of them have Websites. I live in NYC and the ones that I found on PS were all rather expensive, they charged by the carat and mine is only 1.45. The lowest price was $175 all the way tto $280. Where is Barry Block located?

At the top right under "Resources," you''ll see the option for appraisers listed. Though I think they tend to range $75 - $300, this person should be about 1/2 hour from you, is listed here as indepenet apprasier, so you might give him a call to get a better idea.

Best,

Harry Cannon in Eagan quoted me about $75. Only problem is that I live in Coon Rapids. Such a way to go. I guess if you want to get an appraisal you need to go somewhere ''eh?

A few thoughts:

1) I think you''re not getting a round diamond, no? If not getting a round, I would recommend a local appraiser, to gain the most benefit from your evaluation.

2) Based on what''s known about the performance of rounds, based on a diamond''s proportions, I would agree with Strorm, and say that unless you have an AGS certed diamond (trustworthy specs already provided) I would predisposed to use either Rich or one of the other 3 appraisers dominant on this board, who have equipment to measure those.

3) Although it''s just round non-AGS diamonds for which this distinction is more critical, isn''t that more than 1/2 bought? I think this distinction will change once GIA provides their mark, but I guess that may be some time away.

Just my 2 cents.

I just got done with doing an appraisal with Rockdoc (Bill) and he charges per carat and NOT per hour. I know that I got every penny out of what Rockdoc charged me for his services for the amount of time he spent with me on the diamonds that I sent to him. I would recomend him to anyone, such an honest person with excellent work ethic, and he has all the instruments to provide the consumer everything they want to know about their diamond. You can go to his website and see his prices they are very very reasonable for all the work he does on a diamond. It was 160 a carat for all the analysis plus briliance scope analysis (125 per carat without brilliant scope of the top of my head). www.consumersgemlab.com He is located in Florida.

Take care!
