I recently had my diamond wedding ring set appraised. The initial appraisal came back with a "G" color rating. I took the ring back to same place to have the main diamond mounted in a lower setting. They did a good job, but I was concerned because the diamond looked different, more white. I took the ring to a different appraiser. The second appraisal came back with an "I" rating. Is it unusual, for two different appraisals to give different color ratings? Are G and I difficult to differentiate from. The stone was identified as VS1 in both appraisals.

Anything over 1 grade difference is something to be concerned about.
If the second appraisal had came back H then I wouldnt worry too much because one persons low G might be anothers high H.
An I on the other hand is outside the margin of error and you need to talk to them.

Was either of the appraisers an independant appraiser?
What does the cert for the diamond say it should be?

Was a plot of the inclusions done on the first appraisal? If so, you could use this to identify if it is the same diamond.

Also, the other characteristics listed will help determine if it is the same diamond:

MM measurements
Total depth percentage
Fluorescence
Table size
Girdle thickness, and finish of girdle (frosted, faceted, waxy, polished?)
Crown height
Pavilion depth
Culet size
Symmetry
Polish

If these things all match up and you only have a difference of opinion on color, it's probably the same stone.

Could be the stone is an "H", and the first guy overshot while the second guy undershot.

Hi,

Do you know if they were using comparison master diamonds to determine color? Or were they just winging it? Or maybe using CZ masters? Makes a big difference....the manner in which an appraisal is done.

This will never end! The one thing to do is send the thing to a lab - at least they would give a split color grade, I supose. With color obvious from the top, I would bet on two grades difference from the center's though.

Master sets or not, there will always be some local grading policy to take into account: so an 'optimistic' H makes a "G" and a 'pessimistic' one an "I" !

How much can this matter?

Thanks for the information. As far as I know a plot wasn't done on the the first appraisal. It was a reputable place though. I'm thinking that the first guy over shot on color and the second guy undershot.

The ring was purchased in the middle east and didn't come with a diamond certification.

I'm not sure.

Thanks for the feedback.
