I'm about to purchase a cushion from ERD. I was hoping to do a two part appraisal (loose diamond and then once more after it's set by Leon Mege) with Thom Underwood in San Diego since I live here.

I just spoke to Mark who said I should use someone in NYC because of shipping the cushion to SD, then to NYC for it to be set, and back to SD would be long, tedious and expensive. What are your thoughts on this? Should I just get it appraised by David Wolf even though I can't be present during the appraisal?

If the appraisal is the $ value only then it probably does not matter.
If you want a cut quality second opinion then go with whoever can give an aset analysis
you can then post the image here too

SD, than you could be there for it.

I would like both.

ditto

Shipping depending on size shouldn''t be more than $50 or so each way.
Have ERD fed ex it overnight under his insurance to Thom Underwood then see if Thom Underwood can do the same to send it back.

If you need to see the stone in order to decide if you even want it, then by all means have it sent to SD!!! If you are already 100% sold on the stone, then I don''t think it is necessary.

It''s a 2 carat $17k. Thom''s out of the office until tomorrow so I''ll have to speak to him then.

I think it''s worth it to see the stone before it''s set and have the condition of the stone fully documented before it goes to Leon. (BTW - excellent choice on going with Leon for the setting! His work is

Since you''re doing a two-part appraisal, I''d go with your local guy.

According to the ERD website, there is free Fed Ex shipping (http://engagementringsdirect.com/about.php/id/5) so you save the shiipping cost at least one way. I think it is a great idea to see the diamond before you send it off to be set. This way you can see if you actually like the diamond, take photos, and sit down for an appraisal. It minimizes risk - imagine if you didn''t like the diamond after it is set!

I''m going with Thom Underwood (local). I left him a message earlier this morning so hopefully I will speak to him soon. The 14 day return policy and the free shipping made it easier to decide. Plus, I''m not 100% sure I''m going with Leon since I don''t quite have a grip on how I want the setting to look.

Thank you again everyone for the posts!
