Appraisal - Must diamond be loose?

I think I have finally found the stone for me and will have it shipped to me for appraisal. However, it kinda does make sense to have it set in the ring immediately. For appraisal purposes, does it matter if the stone was already set?

It doesn't matter but accuracy increases with a loose diamond, and the ability of the appraiser regardless of loose or set. Color is more difficult. Even at the GIA, a mounted stone would receive a three color range. Appraisers on a mounted stone will usually give a two color range.
