Does a stone need to be loose for an accurate appraisal, or can it be performed on a mounted stone if accompanied by its GIA certificate? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

If you want a Sarin or MegaScope proportion analysis the stone would have to be loose, but otherwise you should be okay with it mounted and giving the appraiser the help of the GIA cert. With it he will know the precise weight and measurements, along with GIA's assessment of the color and clarity. He could also estimate the crown height and pavilion depth.

Ordinarily appraisers prefer to have stones loose so they can get accurate measurements and color grade, but again the GIA cert would satisfy most appraisers in lieu of this.
