Hi this is my first post, though I''ve been lurking on the site for I don''t know how long. This site has been a great source of information and I want to thank all the contributors for making it so awesome.

I am about to purchase a stone through Blue Nile and then plan to bring that stone to an authorized TACORI dealer to be made set in the Tacori Crescent 2565. My job is located in New York right next to diamond district which is close to appraiser I plan to use and the BM I plan to buy the setting from. Two things: First should I get the diamond appraised before it is sent to Tacori or after I receive the completed engagement ring? (This will take about 4-6 weeks) Second, I am a little apprehensive of handing over the diamond to the BM for sending to Tacori. Should I just order the setting from Tacori, and have the BM set the diamond?

Thanks for your help on this.

If it were me, I''d have the diamond appraised b/f the store sends it to tacori and then reappraised once it''s back so the new setting can be added to the appraisal. I can understand being nervous about sending your stone off to Tacori but we have heard many a story of designer settings getting messed up with the local store tries to set the stone. So, I would definitely want Tacori to set it.

Ejv207,

Welcome to this forum!

It''s always a good idea to get the loose diamond independently appraised prior to setting the stone, especially if you will need to part with the stone for a bit. In addition, the appraisers best shot at applying a comprehensive appraisal to the stone, is in its loose condition. Of course, a competent appraiser should have no problem with evaluating a set diamond, but it''s still not the same.

Ask your appraiser about evaluating the loose diamond first and then going back for a final report/addendum to incorporate the added value of the ring setting itself. In many instances, an appraiser will charge you one fee for both phases of this appraisal and will be happy to complete the final phase upon completion of the ring.

As to whether you should have the B&M or Tacori set the stone for you, I am puzzled as to your considerations/concerns.

1. Either way, you will be forced to part with your diamond while it is being set. The B&M jewler will not set the diamond while you wait and in front of you.

2. If this is a security/trust issue, assuredly you trust the B&M jeweler who is selling the ring in their capacity as an Authorized Tacori dealer, so why would you have any potential concerns about relying on them to send the stone to Tacori for the setting and then having it sent back to them and on to you in a satisfactory manner?? The bottom line is, they are responsible for the stone while it is in their care.

Finally, you are purchasing a gorgeous setting which is custom manufactured by a leading designer. This is an intricate ring that assuredly involves as much attention to detail in the final setting phase of securing the stone into the ring, as in the settings'' creation in the first place.

Therefore, you need to ask your jeweler if Tacori will even allow somebody outside of their employ to actually set your diamond into their ring.

In most cases, these designers will void your lifetime warranty (and for good reason), the minute somebody outside of their employ touches the setting before it is entirely finished.

Jewelers have been known to botch custom work and no designer wants to be on the hook for the shoddy workmanship of those outside of their employ.

Getting an answer to this important question, may be the most important consideration for you at this point.

Best of luck!

See my last post here...it may solve some problems...

Have it appraised before you set it. It will be more accurate

Hi,
I always tell all my customers to have it appraised before any work has to be made and upon satisfaction of the appraisal then proceed to have the ring made or set. After all that, take the ring back to the same appraiser to verify that everything went well.
Best of luck
