I just received an independent appraisal on a stone I have purchased. I''m somewhat leery of the discrepancies between the three (seller, GCAL, and independent) appraisals I have. The main differences are listed below:

Measurements: 5.78x5.79x3.95, 5.81x5.81x3.95, 6.05x6.06x3.95
Replacement Cost: $7,450 (quoted as insurance replacement cost), $11392 (quoted as retail replacement cost)

The other specs of the stone (depth, table, etc.) are pretty close, not enough to bother me, but these two seem to get me wondering.

Any opinions on this or advice on the whole appraisal process?

What shape is it? A square? Could be the dimonsions are edge to edge versus diagonal corner to corner

It is a Jubilee, I'll be discussing the results with Jonathan tomorrow, but wanted to get other opinions first.

I had thought they may be measuring differently, but it could be the diagonal on all of them. Using the Pythagorean theorem for right triangles, which this technically isn't but it's pretty close, the diagonal based on the first two measurements would be over 8 mm. That took some jogging of the brain to remember.

Two of the three measurements match are close, so I guess I'm most concerened about the replacement value differences. Is this a big deal at all?

A reminder that GOG is on vacation this week until next Tuesday.

Was the larger measurement from GCAL? There were some stones that had the wrong setting on the sarin and produced measurement error in the range you have. BTW pythagorean's theorem doesn't quite work because of the cut corners.

On insurance value, read some old threads here, there has been plenty of discussion and views of appraised value for insurance and premiums. I would say you would wnat it specifically note an a Jubliee since it is a premium branded stone and in the event of a loss would want a like replacement.

Will you shre details of the purchase at some point? It was interesting following chrono's and ep's stories

The larger measuremenets were from GCAL. So that may explain the inaccuracy of these measurements. I guess detailing the replacement stone needed on the insurance policy would be better and would provide a more discriptive way to replace the stone. That seems to be a whole new can of worms that I have to research. We're just trying to make sure we're getting what we (I) pay for I guess.

If we decide to keep the stone, I will share details. We're at the deadline to decide, and we were leaning towards keeping it. The discrepancies just kind of threw us for a "loop".
