I just recently got engaged. My diamond is a 1.0 original radiant (RCDC) It is an SI1 and E color. We paid about 6500 for the diamond or so and 2000 for the mounting. I have two questions that I am hoping someone can answer. Here they are:

1. Doesn''t an RCDC diamond come with an RCDC box? I have seen these beautiful boxes that have an rcdc diamond in them but mine came from the store I got it from. I know it is silly but I want one of these beautiful little boxes too because I do have the rcdc diamond. I asked the store and they said they have never seen these boxes and they just get the stone in envelopes with all of the specs.

2. Should an RCDC diamond be appraised higher than a non branded radiant diamond? I would think and hope so. The reason I ask is because the store appraised my diamond and it was only 15% higher than what we paid. However when looking at the prices of an rcdc diamond on their website that are close to the specs of mine the diamond is at least 8000. The place I got my diamond at is very well known and respected and is the only place in the Pittsburgh area that carries "RCDC" diamonds. I was hoping it would be appraised at much more than what it is because it is an rcdc diamond. Sorry to be a brat about things but just curious! Any help would be much appreciated. (Especially from Stan :) )

Thanks,

Meg

diamonds don't usually come with boxes.

the same store that sold you the diamond appraised it at 15% over what you paid

clearly, if they just apply 15% for all e-ring "appraisals," than the "extra value" of an ORCD is already built into the "appraisal."

Okay but is that right or should I ask them why it is not higher? Am I wrong to think it should be appraised higher than a non branded radiant?

Oh I should also mention that my best friend just got engaged and she has a non branded oval diamond and her appraisal is about 15 percent above what they paid as well.

If you''re saying that your ring recently appraised at around $7,475 (6,500 + 15%) and you think it would cost around $8,000 to replace it, then that sounds like a problem. You don''t want it to appraise unrealistically high; you want it to appraise for a realistic replacement value.

I am saying that we bought the diamond and setting from the same store and paid about 8500 total. It was appraised for 9,730 or something like that. I looked at the Original radiant website and the same diamond I paid about 6000 for was about 8000. I just felt that because it was an RCDC diamond it should be appraised higher than a non branded diamond. Am I wrong to think that? The same store appraised my best friends diamond at 15 percent higher than what they paid too. Thanks so much for any help.

Oh on a side note the store told me they usually appraise about 20-25% above what you paid for it.

What have most peoples rings recently been appraised at percentage wise?

I have a similar question about appraisals.

The diamond has the H&A pattern cut into a brilliant round
Based on GEMEX lab, light performance is: white = H-VH / fire = VH+ / scintillation = VH
(Curious... GEMEX vs. GCAL lab reports... anyone have a preference and why?)

1.36-Carat Round ''Crown Jewel'' Diamond, ASG 000, H-color, and VS2-clarity
Depth % = 60.9%
Table % = 57.4%
Crown angle = 32.9 deg.
Pavilion angle = 41.1 deg.
Symmetry = Ideal
Polish = Ideal
Girdle = 1.5% to 3.9%
Culet = none
Fluorescence = negligible/none
Measurements: 7.12 x 7.16 x 4.35 mm
HCA = 1.7
Cost = $10,900 (temp. setting included)

Why would it appraise at $16,000 (at the store I bought from) when they sold it to me for so much less? Should I care that they appraised the ring at such a high value? Is there anything about this stone that scares anyone? There is a 30 day return policy, should I get a second appraisal?

This will impact insurance costs, if nothing else. By the way, for insurance... how is Jewelers Mutual? That''s the one the store recommended... does anyone else have a better insurer? Is there a FAQ already posted on jewelry insurance?

Thanks!
